Sum of Cats

Dear Molly Malamute,

Such Dunderheads we are. Mystery solved. Not a cardboard obstacle course prototype in the living room. Or an attempt to create a sound proof bunker to muffle the constant irritating ding-dongs at the door by Amazon and Fed Ex right now.

A moving event. Again

But my Person says this is our paws down forever home.

Good news: there’s a nice yard. Paw tested well.

Very large cat being held. ALL rights reserved. Copyrighted. NO permissions granted for this image

“Wait. Is it winter? I feel a draft.”©

Bad news: Yes. A large sumo cat.

Apparently, he heard of Granny Cat’s passing and moved quickly to fill the vacancy.

Smelled bad. Yes, his rapid securing of place, but even worse, were the toxic fumes from his heavy matted fur and the less than pristine rear end.

After a bath and a (snorting laugh) Poodle clip leaving only neck ruff and fluff on tail (muffled dog laughter), it was obvious that it wasn’t just hair creating that sumo appearance.

Even more surprising was an additional petite cat. Possibly discovered hiding in sumo cat’s clumped up fur.

Oh, well. They need me.

The big one, Mo (as in Mo Hair), needs an exercise program. Nothing like real stair stepping. I’ll make sure he steps up and down those quickly and often.

And Little needs a guardian and protector so he won’t be so shy. Dog on duty.

Being the RC Canine of a Realm is a serious job, but I have steady paw and will.

Looking forward to your inspection of the new digs.

(I’ve got my very own dirt to dig! My very own!)

Your friend in fur,

The German

Paws Applause: A hard fought victory for military dogs. They are coming home. ALL of them.

You thought it was done and they were safe with the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)? Unfortunately that bill which authorized the transfer of a retiring military working dog if no suitable adopter was available at the military facility where the dog was located, said that the dog “may transfer,” rather than “shall transfer.”

One word. “May” means maybe, or maybe not, depending on space available at the moment, budget, or how someone felt that day. “Shall” (as language students know) is more emphatic, carries strong weight and mandates. It shall be done. No questions. No wiggle room.

For all. Including the dogs that served in non-combat zone overseas. In the past, the military would not provide transportation back to the states for those canine soldiers at all.

All spring and summer, advocates, dog handlers, and military dogs themselves went to Capitol Hill to meet with elected officials, and speak with pride in front of Congress about the importance of bringing all military dogs home and giving their human partners first chance to adopt.

Congressman Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) and Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) worked with the House and Senate to rewrite the easy-out language addressing military dogs for the 2016 NDAA. In early October 2015, the bill, which passed with bi-partisan support, was vetoed by President Obama (for budget reasons).

Lunging forward to this November when the 2016 NDAA passed both houses with a reduction in spending, but with the language for military dogs remaining. And finally, FINALLY, President Obama signed it into law.

No soldier left behind.

Thanks to all who barked long, loud, and incessantly. It does matter.

No matter how nice the B&B, there's nothing as nice as sleeping in your own little bed. (Recent glamour shot during a recent visit)

“No matter how nice the accommodations and company, there’s no place like being safe at home and sleeping in your own little bed.”(As told to Staff during a recent visit)©

I’m so glad that your fourlegged soldiers come home… and I wish them all the best… and a very good christmas. I will send some green papers to their fund this year too and I hope it helps to buy some eggs-tra treats

Paws up for soldier canines coming home. It’s been a real concern considering some of the places they were serving have different attitudes about dogs and that their work is very difficult both mentally and physically. Dogs do seem to put so much to right…There should be more at the side of leaders and elected government officials to keep things moving in the right directions and show what is important. Salute to the working dogs. Thanks for your support.

Wait. I’m confused. (Of course, I’m easily confused.) You mean you’ve added two cats to your household? (Or four cat equivalents, from the looks of Mo.) We need deteails, girl! From whence did they come? Are they staying? What does RC think? Clearly, I need more coffee to deciper all this.

Good news about the dogs, that’s for sure. How the simplest things can be made so difficult by the government is a wonder, for sure.

More coffee…here, too. I knew this would toss in some confusion, but you can always muzzle dogs when they speak. We finally managed to get The German’s tummy issues under control – and her Person’s new house was finally ready with all furniture and the (important things) German’s toys and bed moved in. So she returned to her home. As nervous and emotional as she gets (and she is getting older) we thought all the packing and moving was upsetting her – you know she has to “clear” any boxes or parcels that come in the house…maybe it was nose overload with holiday deliveries…and she is very wary of ding-dongs and large heavy delivery trucks even when she walks – evil eyes them – jeeps, too.
Apparently Person also has adopted 2 cats who need some care. That is one huge cat- even without hair. So far it’s working…but hear additional staff may be being taken on…The German is a letter writer, so we’ll probably hear more.
Now back to the coffee (and if only that one item for each bill existed, maybe the dogs would have been taken care of earlier….(or was that original wording done intentionally by politicians?) Thanks for staggering through the bleariness to comment

    German,
Congratulations on the new addition – Mo looks to be quite a fine sumo specimen. Of course, he’ll need the proper sumo attire as befits his profession and paws crossed he limits his wrestling to others in his profession. Maybe the newly discovered petite cat is his trainer? Best of luck on the new addition! (He’s absolutely glorious – would love to give him kitty rubs.)

Yay to the K-9 vets! That’s fantastic news. I recently saw that in 2016 acts of animal cruelty will be considered a Class A Felony. All sorts of great news this year for beloved animal companions.

Now you may have discovered the little cat’s secret! Hilarious! Must relay that to the German and her Person. Explains everything. The German found all sorts of surprises when her Person took her home this time.
There is a lot of good news on the fur fronts. Thanks for pawsing to applaud.

Whoa. Big cat! Not sure how much Mo weighs, but the vet was “fat shaming” them…but he just came that way! Mo’s getting over the embarrassment after the clipping. He does have a very sweet and expressive face. He’s certainly a mountain of a cat. Thanks for adding a meowy remark

I must be reading your posts too long because I understood everything. Scary since you write cryptically. The sumo cat is in for a big surprise. I expect there will be less food and more movement coming his way. I’m curious how RC (your RC) will react when they come to spend time at your house. She wasn’t fond of Granny cat as I remember or maybe Granny cat wasn’t fond of anyone. Good luck to his person. Big cheer for all canine warriors whether they were at the front line or not.

Be afraid, very afraid. HA HA. So far Mo seems to react with big eyes and freezing. The German is quite sure that if she can’t be on the bed nobody gets on the bed…so Mo simply stretches out on the German’s lovely fluffy memory foam bed…so the German figures it’s ok to look invisible on the nice new big cushy round tufted ottoman. Musical beds!
RC Cat is relieved that The German has RC experience as she snorted that Mo is no RC. Granny may have been tiny, but she demanded respect with an iron sharp claw…and RC knew to respect her elder…or just ignore her. Mo may be a whole different game if there is an occasion to visit. (fingers crossed behind my back. You didn’t see those…)
Best outcome for the soldier dogs. They are wanted and now more will have a happy well deserved retirement.
Thanks for unwinding all the puzzles here

They were “fat shamed” at the vet. All the stairs and having the German around should make a difference…except Mo has decided just sitting down and pretending to be invisible will be his strategy for unexpected encounters with a large bouncing dog. Can’t wait until all that fur grows out again. A dapper fellow.

This is couch is highly rated by dogs and lounging people. Easy to clean, too. One cushion needs a bit of a mend from Molly tasting it..she swears she was nervous and just tasting. Sigh. Better couches have cushions you can reverse.
We understand the German is claiming dibs on a new round cushy ottoman. (She says it’s fit for a princess, so it must be hers, right? Will have to find that picture…) Anyway, Mo is trying to stretch out and claim the German’s bed, so fair is fair.
Snowy would definitely vote for the large princess ottoman. All princesses should have a tufted cushiony bed.And staff. Staff who knows their place. And now this staff is hearing a request for dinner. Thanks fur moving a comment this way

Mo is some cat. A real gentle giant with a sidekick cat. It’s going to be quite a household pack once things get sorted out. (Granny was quite a dear when younger..The grouchiness came with old age and maybe senility, so no one felt she didn’t have the right to do what she wanted.)
      Yes, something done right finally.

Mo has some pretty sturdy tree trunk legs – pretty “tall” for a cat. Of course, he’s a lot lower to the ground in flight, uh, in slide on wood floors. Pretty laid back all things considered. (Has decided to take over the German’s bed, so the German has claimed a plush tufted round ottoman which looks like a princess bed…it’s going to be musical chairs for a while I think.)

What you need is a greyhound. Nothing like them for exercising cats. What Scrooges, intending to leave the military dogs behind. When you think what they spend on gadgets and gear, does a dog plane ticket home cost so much?

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Dec 3 2015 5:42 pm

It must be the hot weather here – all the retired/rescued greyhounds here are couch loungers. (They finally closed the nearby dog track which helps the rescue leagues a lot)
If anyone had asked either soldier dog handlers, those guys would have been glad to hold a dog on their laps all the way back home. And dog curl up pretty small when necessary. Just stupid. Fingers crossed the runway is cleared for dog take-offs now. Thanks for running along

No, all greyhound types are lazy devils. Until they see a cat… I’m glad they’re bringing the dogs home. There was a national outcry here when a police dog was killed by terrorists. Particularly because the dog was sent into the place first. To find out exactly where the terrorists were hiding.

So greyhounds chase cats as well as fake rabbits? Glad something gets them moving.
I know Diesel the Paris police dog was killed. There was that last picture of his handler talking to him before he went in – the dog was so serious. Tragic. Tragic. People and groups here started raising money and buying police dogs bullet proof vests last summer. The vests are needed. sadly recently a dog was badly stabbed in a vestless area by a criminal he was taking down. Dogs are one of the best solutions for law enforcement. All of the service dogs who fearlessly protect should be honored. Thanks for barking along

Completely off topic here…do you follow Houston Cougars football and, if so, are you excited about our Temple Owls visiting your lovely city this weekend to do battle? It is very likely the winner will get a berth in a New Year’s Day game and there isn’t much to cheer for in Philly these days so at least some of us are looking forward to the game very much! By the way…on topic Mo IS very large…but hopefully also very happy!

It’s on topic: cougs are some cats! (Actually with the research group there for a few years) It’s going to be a claw and tooth battle. The coach is a slow and steady, one game at a time guy (and has been secured by a quick pay hike and extended contract) and the team is ready to rumble. While there are multiple colleges/universities here, right now everyone wearing red and scratching for a UH win.
Like you say, sometimes you have to run with the winners.(You do know the story behind the bent finger hand/paw sign?)
Mo, supporting like a close species win will no doubt insist on the game being on the big TV.

I read a book about a military dog who was struck with PTSD. Dogs do suffer, too. Glad they will come home and may be adopted by the human soldiers they know.
By the way, I always thought dunderhead was a Jamaican expression, but obviously not. Do you know where it comes from? Delightful in its own way.

Dunderhead actually used to be said around here when I was growing up – I thought it came from England/Scotland/Germany – and that literature? (It was ok to say that but not “stupid” or “idiot” then) I think we both may be right (http://www.word-detective.com/2011/07/dunderhead/)
Dogs do suffer PTSD. Dog Whisperer even agrees. I wrote about military dogs being treated for it by the military vet in San Antonio. The German actually suffered/s from it after repeated trauma on the job which is why she is retired…anything that sounds like gun fire puts her into complete panic and flight.
The handlers and dogs belong together if at all possible. There’s a strong bond, and they went through so much together. Good to be able to keep your buddy around to help each other. Thanks for loping by to chat
