Masking allusions

Young girl sitting. Marguerite Clark, SNow White production/American MAgazine, 1913 (USPD.pub.date/Commons.wikimedia.org)

I wanted to be Jane Long for Halloween, but they shook their heads, tightened their lips, and said no. Ugh, to silly Snow White. Lizzie Borden or Typhoid Mary appropriate choice for society’s current mood and cultural dictates.(USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Oh, the drama! Halloween. Cultural appropriation.

Wait. Isn’t that what actors and actresses do as their full time job? Think about it. They become another.

So if acting is an honorable profession – and it involves assuming another’s speech, dressing, hair style, mannerisms – well, then, it must also be honorable and OK for ordinary people to do that, too, right?

So confusing. Baffled by the make-believe criticisms.

But then again, if performers are just what they were thought of being during the Middle Ages through the Elizabethan Era, well, you know…

“In Elizabethan England, the theatre was considered a hangout for unsavory characters such as prostitutes and thieves. Also, actors were considered very low at the time too and would not receive a Christian burial unless they denounced their trade on their death bed. This belief also goes back to the middle ages, with wandering theatre troupes and the types of people who were in them.” (source)

Not to mention performers may have helped spread fleas and diseases like the plague as they traveled. Coincidences of bad stuff and you were not a safe thing back then….witches, demons, spirits, and burnings, you know.

Oh, a pox on that.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, it’s said.

So go ahead. Pick any Halloween costume showing who you respect and admire and enjoy.

Dare you.

Ironically, if clothes make the man or woman, when costumed, you become exactly as you appear. Tell critics that. Works for politicians.

Pick your poison, uh, personality to project.(USPD/commons.wikimedia.org)

Speaking of irony, have you noticed this weirdness: On line Amazon is massive, growing larger daily, and burning up all sales predictions, while across the line, The Amazon is burning up, crumbling, and disappearing.

If space aliens arrived million of years from now and found the word “Amazon” scattered everywhere, what possible conclusions would they draw from that?

  • “Well, was this some overlord plundering his area for materials and products, then moving those north to sell to the peasant masses there?”
  • “A primitive experiment by primitive people: Twins separated at birth, raised in different environments, producing opposites: good twin and evil twin?”

You got any better ideas or plausible explanation for that?

Spooky, loopy, and goofy. Image that.

Camille Paglia remembers “wearing my fabulous Halloween costumes as a Roman soldier, toreador or Napoleon.”
She’s interesting. How about her idea that banning drinking for those under 21 yrs is what’s keeping college students from learning the art of conversation? (Something’s halted that critical development.) First published in WSJ, but you can also read article here.

Exactly. “All the world’s a stage” It would be nice to stage something positive…atleast until humans get through this rough rude stage. Or the stage outta town is gonna get really crowded? HaHa
Thanks for dressing up a few astute words for here

The concept of an actor who gets paid $25 million a film having fleas has me rolling on the floor! They’ve come a long way, haven’t they? Sure hope some of the more esteemed professions like teachers and medical researchers (for cures not new drugs) can get elevated too. We used to celebrate Halloween in my work place. Since I was head of HR, I thought it was appropriate to come as a nun and I did every year. Mother Superior taking names and whacking with a ruler.

You got to wear costumes! Some people had fun places to work. (Wonder if that fun still exists with all the people looking to be offended now)
Your last 2 sentences have planted a post idea…we’ll see if it comes out of hiding. Thanks!

You know, when we as a society pay the people who can pretend to be other people more money than the people who teach us how to be better people, then pretending becomes the norm. And the goal. Not saying I like this, just an observation.

There are so many fine lines when it comes to cultural appropriation or what’s an appropriate costume. I never worried about that when I was a child, but my costumes were pretty white (Raggedy Ann and other red-headed dolls and characters) like me, or could-be-any-color (a nun, a nurse, etc.) so there were no worries there. Gender switches were more controversial (“girls can’t be sheriff!!”).

I had not thought about the weirdness or irony between the two Amazons. Thanks for pointing that out.

And then there’s the Amazons of myths and legends – but hmmm, which one would be that?
Can’t pretend to know – or no.

Hmmm. . . I never considered how someone would consider finding the words Amazon all over the place. Are you sure they wouldn’t think of tall, big bosom women wielding a whip?

Ha Ha – You thought of the same thing. Maybe we should carefully plant indication of that for future generations to find? What they deduce will probably be as accurate/hilarious as some of conclusions we drew/draw about past civilizations. Thanks for adding a fun idea!

What today’s forces of wokeness call cultural appropriation, we used to call cultural appreciation. Sharing customs, foods, costumes, and music were all part of learning to appreciate a world far bigger than our classrooms and towns. I say, bring it back. On the other hand, this year I could forgo the Indian princess or cowgirl and dress as a politician. That’s a pretty weird tribe, with some really strange customs.

Of course if you went as a politician/candidate, you could easy dress as the Indian Princess, too? HaHa
You are so right about cultural appreciation. (and going to all the festivals for all the foods!) Wish they would woke up and reconnect with reality – it’s like nothing existed before them – people, we all used to live and let live and appreciate differences long before you showed up in what ever backwards world this is.
Maybe costume as a Black Hole this year – seems timely. (And why the heck is outer space tossing so many meteors at Earth right now…feeling like a bad tennis player opposite a star?)
Thanks for enjoying the strange daze.

Halloween for me, means carving pumpkins. Burning Man is for costumes. 🙂 Peggy and I just spent a few days with a young actress. Pure charisma. –Curt

Halloween to me means weather may finally cool down here. I remember so many years of sweltering in costumes (which were never store bought..usually whatever we were for May Fete performance or hand-me-downs from older brother/cousins. It was a kid deal and adults didn’t bother with is a lot. By 6th grade you were told you were too old for it and you get to hand out the candy to the little kids. (A parent move that probably set the stage for Burning Man to be created. HaHa)
Glad you’re enjoying wandering and meeting interesting people. Thanks for stopping by to chat

Always fun to see what you are up to. We were pretty outrageous as kids during Halloween. It was always about the booty! 🙂

Mom discourage us from putting out trip wires so we could collect candy even once we were “too old” to go trick or treating….(hey look at that phrase, Mom)

You still doing that? 🙂 My brother and I would jump out of the graveyard that was next to our house. The little kids were so frightened they would drop their candy as they ran away. Just kidding. Sort of.
