Hang on, Kirby. Hang on.

What brought him to this? So few options when clinging to a ledge. See life going down the drain. Go ahead. Leap that 30 feet to the ground. Be done with it. Toss fate to the winds amid the rush hour traffic.

Some sneering bystander was sure to yell: “Hey, make like a cat! Land on your feet. Nine lives, dude. Nine lives. Jump. Jump.”

The noise. Not just in his head. All around.

He sunk into the recess’ shadow.

Maybe getting out of the sun’s glare – the scorching heat – maybe that would let him think.

All of a sudden, there were arms and faces. Voices. Getting frighteningly close.

He pressed back. Too much confusion.

Swung at them – to grab rescue or swat them away.

It no longer mattered which.

Decision had been made. Not by him. The police.

Small tabby cat hiding in drain on 610/Kirby exit. Choice between 4 lanes of traffic or 30 foot drop on other side. (khou screenshot)

There. He moved. You can catch a glimpse him out on the ledge. (khou)

How did it get to this point?

Pitched or toddled out the window of a passing vehicle?

Bad choice during a game of hide and seek with potential dinner?

Unable to take selfies, so attempting a portrait by cop?

They didn’t know, but they did know he wasn’t going to end up as road kill.

Harness with webbing and determination, they tackled, cuddled, and crated the small, terrified, sometimes uncooperative tabby kitten hanging on the ledge of the 610/Kirby overpass during peak afternoon traffic. Later after reaching the safety of the Houston SPCA, the four-month old cat, now called Kirby, purred his thanks to HPD Officer Howze, the Animal Cruelty Investigator, and the Injured Animal Technicians of the Houston SPCA.

If you arrived at this post seeking info concerning Kirby Dr. road construction, you understand the crushing capacity of Houston’s traffic.

Nightmare is an understatement at times – like if you have a doctor’s appointment or tickets to the game.

Attempting to manuever the Rice Village shopping/entertainment area along Kirby Drive? Good luck with that…Fill up the tank and pack a lunch.

Traffic’s frantic frenzy often brings out the worst in people: aggressive driving or road rage.

How about a video as a tutorial for Houston freeway survival skills?

The Honda Civic driver does get a tad annoyed at that white car in front…But who wouldn’t? It’s driving erratically and is all over the road.

Then once he gets around that, then there’s the black Nissan GTR equally irritating him. Take that!

Seriously, though, suggesting being cautious about the hand gestures around here these days…

Never underestimate the little guys: cars or cats.

Both may the guts to hang on, finish as the winner, and possibly kick you to the curb in the process.

Steering with care,

Phil, the Philosopher Mouse of the Hedge.

This is the post that was supposed to be published Monday, but ankle gash by disorderly beer bottle while checking supplies in anticipation of Tropical Depression/storm Bill ended up grabbing the stage.

So just consider this Wednesday’s post as it’s very likely we will lose power from wind/fallen trees (The ground is so soggy from Memorial Day’s floods, trees may find roots are grabbing onto mush.) Lots of rain expected from now until maybe even Thurs.

The storm looks like it will head into Matagorda Bay area, TX on Tues and then picked up and tossed north on Wed by some weather coming across from Mexico and circling around big high pressure that is currently over Alabama and Georgia that is headed east.

What? More than you ever wanted to know about tropical weather and the gulf coast?

OK. How about watching a video of Kirby’s rescue?

That ought to be worth a smile.

Kirby at SPCA (Houston SPCA Facebook)

Scary, but worth it. The next thing on his To Do List is a Forever Home…and to stay out of traffic (Houston SPCA FB)

Your dedication to bringing us important stories is amazing. I much prefer human kindness and happy ending kitty stories to news media fodder… another Bush running for presidency. One of the bonuses if the power goes out, no news is good news 🙂

I do miss the quiet of the farm when we were growing up – no TV or radio signal could be grabbed. And no phone calls from work which my dad really appreciated. Smart guy, I’ve grown to see now. Quiet places are rare and far between now.
Thanks for enjoying the peace and quiet.

That’s a particularly fast moving stretch of road. One cat who knows duck and cover isn’t just for birds and school kids. Thanks for giving a yowl.

Thinking of you as the waters rise. Thanks for the rescue story! Just when you’ve begun to think human beings are pretty sorry excuses for living, here come a few humans with hearts and determination to save a little life. There’s hope after all!

Tropical storm Bill was far enough down the coast that this area just had to deal with constant rain/drizzle/rain bands for days and days. They may be building an ark in Central Texas though? Thanks for leaving a watery comment! (and cheering for one furry little adventurer…who’s going to be grounded now)

Cheers to the rescuers … Just another example about the downside of curiosity. … Meanwhile, stay dry and take care of that ankle.

You are so clever to remember that cat curiosity. The shelter posted a new picture showing Kirby ready to choose his new person. (The storm went far enough south this area only had to deal with constant rain/drizzle/rain bands for endless days…and I found an excuse to escape – ankles heal when not wet, right?…more on that tomorrow. Will run over your way soon! Thanks for hanging something on the comment wall.

    “sometimes uncooperative tabby kitten”?

The very definition of kitten is uncooperative! Love this story. We all need more happy Kirby endings.

Sweet kitty! I’m surprised anyone saw him. Hope he finds a good home without ledges.

He was certainly hard to spot. Maybe someone in the office building/hotel along the road saw him. The SPCA posted a new picture and said he’s ready to choose an person. A nice two story house/indoor environment with stairs, a bannister, and maybe some nice kitchen cabinets would work perfectly? He is a cute one. Thanks for the purrfull remark

So glad that adorable kitten was rescued. I hope Bill doesn’t hang around too long or cause too much trouble.

The shelter posted a new picture of Kirby and says he’s ready to select his new person now. That’s one lucky cat as the drivers along there go much too fast.
Tropical storm Bill ended up far enough south of here down the coast that this area only had to put up with constant drizzle/downpours/rain bands for days and days. Fun with dogs! Central TX however maybe ready to build an ark. Hard to complain when so many places are so dry(but actually I was the one voted to escape and try and coax the storm inland and north…and it did seem to follow along – and once again I tricked it and left it up there…but more on that tomorrow) Thanks for hanging around and leaving a comment

I have tried and tried and tried and finally given up on seeing Kirby’s rescue. My connection is terrible and I’m expecting y’all have water in the wires. Hope you haven’t washed away. This global climate change crap is pissing me off, too.

Kirby has a new picture up. He’s about ready to audition for his person. Certainly a cute cat…who needs room to roam safely inside for a bit – too hot here for anything to play outside. Try their link to YouTube for the rescue: http://www.houstonspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=homepage_new
Central TX maybe about ready to build arks. The storm went far enough down the coast that people here just had days and days of endless rain and bored/wet dogs. Power wavered a couple of times but was pretty stable. Now it’s hot enough to melt just about anything – heat index over 100…with gnats and mosquitoes. So pretty much normal. The last time we had one of these La Nina wet cycles/years I though I was going to grow webbed feet. Actually I was offered a chance to escape the area for a while and took it – landing in some gorgeous weather with a foot healed up enough to carefully walk and see stuff. (They can deny it, but I know they decided to use me as bait to lure the storm away…and it did follow after a fashion arriving today close to where i left last night…more on that tomorrow’s post)

Well done Houston SPCA. Thanks for sharing this, Philosopher Mouse. Or do you prefer your full name? I wouldn’t want to seem forward. I support as many of the ASPCA branches as I can and it’s good to know my dollars are helping. You write in prose, but it feels more like poetry. You sir, are an artist and paint with your words. Quite brilliant – you can’t see me, but I’m giving you a standing ovation. – Bethany
