Settled by loners, misfits, dreamers, and the downright lost, this area champions underdogs. (How else can you explain the fan base of the Houston Texans football team? That first round draft pick already injured, having surgery, and missing mandated practice. His problem didn’t show up over night as a surprise. It’s got to be the “poor puppy needs a home” syndrome.)

Sad puppies of the litter need homes, too. No one can walk away from sad puppies. Lucky, one lady didn’t last week.
She didn’t plan on making a statement, but when she pulled into the parking spot at the local water park, there he was.
Panting profusely and sweltering in his lovely fur coat, the Labrador Retriever was getting desperate. Outside, it was over 95 degrees. An oven in the car.
That little trick of rolling a window down an inch so the dog can wait in the car while the owners chill out for the day wasn’t working for him.

Leaving a dog – or a child – in a vehicle to suffer in the summer heat here is against the law.
Death. That’s what happens. It doesn’t take long and it’s brutal as they simply cook to death.
Couldn’t find the owners, so she called 911. And posted a video of the poor animal on Facebook.
Not only did the Montgomery County Sheriff show up, but 8-9 women also – with hammers.
Somehow they managed to shove the window down far enough for a skinny arm to snake down and unlock the car.
Grateful dog carried to vet.
The sheriff waited until the owner came out – hours later.
Not only surprised his dog was gone, totally shocked when arrested and hauled off to jail.
Apparently in Wisconsin, they either have much cooler weather or an odd way of getting rid of unwanted pets.

Locking live things in hot cars is taken serious here for good reason.
Little kids strapped in car seats die every summer.

So if you’re moving here, learn the laws if you forget to pack common sense.

That doesn’t go here in Pennsylvania either. A year or so back, a child died in a car. Seems his mother thought his father took him to day care. Didn’t notice him in the back seat. Really? Everyone felt really bad and was sorry but the kid was dead. Someone went to jail. Dogs don’t always get the same press but people do call the police for dogs too.

I can’t believe that they had a great time at the water park while their dog was nearly grilled in the car… some people shouldn’t have a dog nor any animal… except lice&fleas. Thanks for calling 911 and thanks to the women with the hammers.

The owner seemed totally stunned. (Odd. He’s in the water because it’s so hot….) Locals know there is little time to spare and most step in quickly. Hope the new people/not so aware ones get up to speed quickly. Paws up for rescuers! Thanks, Easy

That just breaks my heart. I’m glad someone saw him and called 911. Can’t these people make just one thought leap further and think, “Hmm, would I want to be locked inside a hot car all day with an inch of window open?” My guess is they wouldn’t want to be in it for one minute let alone a day, so what makes them think it’s okay for a pet? So, so dangerous.

There’s a judge up that way that tailors punishments…maybe put the owner in a fur coat and lock him in a car in a sunny parking lot….hey, even with all the windows rolled all the way down…We lived that way for years, so how could it be cruel?

Too many deaths of kids/animals in cars happen in Arizona, too. (Hello, it’s like 110 degrees outside… doubt these people would consider lounging in the car with air conditioner off.) Glad the dog was rescued.
As for the ‘forgotten’ children… maybe my children were noisier than most, but there was no way they would let me forget them anywhere! In that respect, I’m thankful they made their presence known 🙂

It may be dry heat, but it’s still deadly heat. People new to the area (especially from cooler states) may not realize yet. And leaving the AC turned on when you get out doesn’t work – they lost a police dog that way last summer.
Another problem here is the rivers aren’t like the lakes and rivers back home. Ones like the San Jacinto may have a beach, but locals know the water is murky, the current swift, there are huge deep unexpected drop-offs, lots of stringy weedy plants that wrap, and submerged trees and assorted stuff to bash you as it zooms downstream.
Good time to hibernate indoors for a bit.

Let’s hope the ratio of Heroes to Bloody Idiots at least maintains equity It’s hard to imagine how people so stupid manage even basic day to day life. The dog lucked out in more ways that being saved from the heat, it’s parted company with its moron human, sad I’m sure in the short term but for the better.

That parking lot is usually totally full – that driver commented she couldn’t believe her luck when she saw that empty spot. Looks like something/someone was watching out for that puppy. Whew. Thanks for barking along

Kudos to the sheriff who waited so long for the owner to appear. I’m so glad the dog was rescued. These stories don’t always have happy endings.

Going to be a long hot summer at this rate. They really need to do something about the dogs riding in the back of pickup trucks in summer. Metal is much too hot for them to be there. Stick the dog inside under feet if necessary or leave them at home. During the summer, they don’t really enjoy sitting there while you are in the grocery store either. And dogs refuse to keep hats and sunglasses on! Thanks for driving a comment over

We used to have a football team here too – but it has since disappeared. Ha! They actually drafted a player who had passed away in an accident. They weren’t very good, although there is talk about resurrecting the team.
We have laws protecting animals here as well. Still every year someone forgets a child or animals in the heat. The winter is just as bad as it sometimes gets down to -40 (celcius or Fahrenheit – same at that temp). Babies or animals left don’t last long. There were a few last year. It’s very, very sad.

Live players do run faster and play better. A few of ours seem to lack any motivation in past years. Fans will apparently tolerate anything as long as they can party in the parking lot. Maybe if they paid players after each game based on their performance…
We just have flipped hostile environments – we hibernate during brutal summer, you wrap up for bitter cold. We never invite people we like to visit during the summer. If you’re not used to it, it’s a real shock. With all the people moving here, there’s going to be a learning curve about survival here. Knowing that, people don’t mess around if they see a kid/dog in the car. Gets deadly very fast. And if car owners are mad about smashed windows, too bad. Thanks for parking a great comment.

One at base of rock on beach shows period dressing. Going through a box and trying to sort by era – mom sorted by location – at least I recognize handwriting on some and can match like sets.
Great grandmother wrote she was trying to buy the “new” hand colored ones. That phrase is printed on some by the company
Fascinating to me. maybe not to others. One is of boats. Will let you know of locations I have – not a whole lot, but fun anyway

Good for Wisonsin Law Enforcement! I think I heard today we’re up to 13 deaths of children so far this year. Who knows how many pets. I saw a recommendation when it came to small children, to leave something like your purse or briefcase or something back with the child, so you’re inclined to turn around and see them. The other suggestion was to leave the diaper bag in the front seat. As for pets, I think it’s more of a case of blatant neglect and not being aware how just a few minutes turns a car into an oven even with the windows down a bit, as you mentioned.

They are really stepping up new stories around here about heat dangers to kids and animals. On city tweeted pix of a smashed car window saying “Your car will look like this if anyone sees a kid or animal left unattended in a car.” It’s going to be a long summer. Now what are they going to do with the bus driver letting a kid sit on the old school bus/private school bus entry steps with the door open while they were driving?
