Lady of a Certain Reputation
Older than dirt.
At least older than the dust lining the window panes.
Winds. Of change. Of seasons. Of years. Of lives.
She steadily continues. Endures, some say.
The Matriarch.
Holding court as necessary.
Her reputation. Her revered status.
She finds it tiresome at times.
But she seems to fill a need in those that follow, so she’s content to play the roll she was written into.
Their quiet reverence when granted an opportunity to pay homage, amusing.
As if she would break.
(Truth be told, the sheepskin welcomed against the cold.)
“Fresh and timeless” they gush in her presence.
“Thoughts still on the same page.”
“Relevance not faded one bit.”
Classic.
Oh, they are always wide-eyed. With well-tutored awe.
Difficult to not chuckle over their stammering as they try to recall what they had been told.
Wouldn’t do to be unkind.
She was above all, fair.
Seen, too, what damage could be done by words.
And arrogance.
Hushed tones. Carefully rehearsed conversation.
As if a well-turned clever phrase would be inappropriate. Unwelcomed.
Ironic.
As if she could be shocked by anything after all these years.
Oh, to feel that excitement again. A little dangerous conversation.
A few selected memoirs to entertain? (We’d see who’s checks bushed first!)
Oh, the hidden meetings. The secret staircases.
The risk.
Just moving across the room seemed dangerous now.
No matter.
They were beginning to hint. To subtly inquire if she had plans.
Coming soon, her birthday!
Undoubtedly, they will want to make a fuss over this one.
Honestly, after the first 100, the novelty wears off.
To be continued.
Her story – and influence – of some length. Her willingness to speak, brief.
“Patience,” she says. (Although, she, herself, not known for it. Demanding.)
Anticipating Part 2.
(No, you’ll never guess. Try. But you won’t.)

Ah, to make it to 100 birthdays. If only I were to be that lucky. I look forward to discovering who this centenarian is!

She’s alive and still giving orders…after several hundred years of birthdays…(hope I can pull this one off – she’s real challenge)
Thanks for pondering.

It’s sure to be someone as regal as the Queen of England but much closer to home, methinks. Curious now.

She’s been there and here and over there, too. She is what she is – can’t rush her. Thanks for musing along

You’re not talking about that mean old cat, are you?

RC would respond but she’s spitting. She’s not that old. (and according to staff, RC doesn’t have that much influence…but don’t tell her, please…really, we’re begging you.) Good guess Bongo!

This was outstanding and resonates with me, Life is an intense drink of spirits where reckless abandon merges with sanity and the eternal rainbow of hope.

You have a nice way with words. Things here aren’t always what they seem – just a head’s up – there are clues and suggestions – and twists and turns – but humor is always present. By in the final accounting, people only see what they want to see – colored by their own experiences and thoughts. So it fits. Life’s a variety show – a banquet. Glad something here tickled your brain. Thanks for a comment greatly appreciated by the mysterious Lady.(She definitely would approve)

You’re packing – so the memories as you go through stuff provided this? She’s no plastic being…certainly not taped together – oh the horrors. Quite well preserved for her age, most marvel when she ventures out. She is what she is – can’t rush her – or speed her up.
Thanks for the good guess!

She moves. Loves turning a page now and then. Not fond of sunlight. Security guards a must as there are those who would….(giggles in thanks)

Not a clue who or what it might be. Thanks for giving something to ponder.

An ancient but practical lady. Must inquire if she’s ready to resume her story. Thanks for musing along

If you hadn’t mentioned the years, I would have guessed only RC would be clothed in such reverential tones, now I must wait for part 2!

RC quite understands. Actually she see this lady as a shining guide of wisdom…and older one…much much older…RC wanted staff to make that clear. Thanks for puzzling along

A couple of you are much too clever…you may have actually encountered her…castles and all that. Hmmm, guess I’d better see if she’s ready to talk. Thanks for sleuthing. (Someday, I’ll have to pull out the real camera…but having a bit of fun without the fuss now. Thanks)

Wow, I once knew a matriarch like that. My great-grandmother.

So true! They were certainly cut from a different cloth. Don’t forget the manners and that “Yes, Ma’m”
Guess who she is yet? Part 2 is up (sorry it’s drawn out, but she started to ramble and it got long….and you know you can’t interrupt one like her.)
Thanks for minding your manners around the Matriarch…(they notice you know.)

Yes, she did notice. She made you feel like you were one of her favorites, one of many favorites, and they were all respectful of her special status. No one presumed that she wanted to have a long conversation with us.
