Meeting of twain
Nothing to do.
Too much to do.
Never the twain shall meet.
Pick your unique experience – whichever suits your interest and energy level.
In this corner: an overload of local activities this past weekend.
Fast Draw competition. (This new sport spreading faster than a speeding bullet? Cool)
Sounds like something from a western movie, but Cowboy Fast Draw is a lightning-fast sport. The area’s best gathered for the state’s Texas Cowboy Fast Draw Championship at the Historic George Ranch in Richmond, TX/Fort Bend County. (The cowboys and cowgirls on video here).
Invitational synchronize swimming competition with over 350 teams from across the US and international. (Splish splash, imagine that. Read more with pictures here.)
Annual BP MS 150 a massive 2 day bike ride from Houston to Texas A&M/Austin (there are several routes now). This is the 40th anniversary of the race that raises millions for multiple sclerosis. (Sat. The wind was in their favor, but on Sunday the lighting…well, electrifying) More race info and video here.
Woodlands Memorial Herman Ironman Competition: For those who think bike riding is not enough….a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run. Hey, but it’s all through a very picturesque area… (Images at bottom of page of info here.)
Art Fest (Sugarland’s sweet offering for feet preferring to seek rather than sweat. Music, beer and wine garden in the shade, along with lots of artists and vendors. Photos here.)
You don’t have to be a pirate for this Treasure Hunt (see something for everyone) The 100th Anniversary of National Coin week. So put on your running shoes, get ready to puzzle out the clues on Instagram to join the treasure hunt! If you are one of the first 5 to arrive with the password at each station, you’ll be rewarded with a vintage coin. (Story and video here.)
And now the “Nothing to Do” suggestions:
(Of course it’s blank there …What did you expect?)
This is the “golden window”. Our narrow slot of time.
Chamber of Commerce smugness delighting in pleasant patio times, outdoor events, local meanderings both mental and physical.
Even with the haze from agricultural smoke from Mexico and Central America, right now it’s mild – a brief spell between winter’s rainy chillings and Summer’s suffocating atmospheric blanket of roasting, sweltering heat.
Oh, yeah, it’s overcast, but fine for that last bit of getting yards fertilized, and flowerbeds tidied, planted, and mulched before Summer’s baking. Summer prep chores accomplished now or never.
So as entertainment (while I muscle mulch bags around), you shall actually meet Twain.
Mark Twain, that is.
“Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself.”
“God created war so that Americans would learn geography.”
“Noise proves nothing. Often a hen who has merely laid an egg cackles as if she laid an asteroid.”
“Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint.”
“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

Lots going on in your area! Love Mark Twain.

You can see why so many younger/career people like it here. Something for everyone – and easy ways to meet people besides dating apps and bars. (but the flowerbeds were demanding mulch so we didn’t go watch the surfers not he big waves whipped up by weather or the kite board riders. Usually unsettled weather or overcast weather keeps the beaches thinned out. We’d better make out last trip to the beach before fall soon – roasting season is arriving.
Thanks for giggling along

The fast draw person on the left has his finger on the trigger . . . seems against everything I know about safe handling of handguns . . . then again, I’m not entering the competition, nor the triathlon, nor the synchronized swimming.
I would do the coin thing, though.
And Mark Twain is always good for sharp observations about the human condition.

I was afraid the reporter would get jittery and shoot himself in the leg. Whew. Even though these were slugs not real bullets, that would leave a mark. Interesting that this is now an “vintage survival life skill” turned into sporting contests – like archery, some martial arts, skeet shooting…or maybe they know something we don’t? HAHA
With generally good weather, this area is big on al sorts of sports (until summer when we either hibernate or play inside…I miss the ice hockey team) You noticed I went with the lug the mulch around HAHA
There are various treasure hunts or orienteering events periodically – now those are/ sound like fun…maybe even in the summer or rainy season.
Thanks for following the trail here.

Where are Mark Twain and Will Rogers when we need them!?

NO kidding. Some afraid to speak, some to dense to understand not everything is hate speech, or so many just shrugged, gave up and walked on.
(Also odd: where the new ballads or protest songs?…”call and response” chanting does not qualify…that’s lowest level of learning and teaching – obviously understood by some. What’s with “protest leaders” constantly looking at their phones between chants…like getting hints or instructions? Sigh)
Creativity has been swamped and left behind like commonsense.
Maybe a few flashing electronic signs with Twain and Rogers?
Thanks for heading this way

The rains have started…at last! Time to bring in the sprinklers and set the alarm to put out the washing at sparrowfart if it is to dry today….

Happy are those who learn early to read the weather and live happily by those signs.
Yes – rain last night – no to sprinklers! (Water is so darn expensive, but the HOA insists on manicured green lawns with landscape….my next house will have rocks – I swear – rocks!
Thanks for scheduling in a dry comment here

The annual wagon train that started at Lake Tahoe and ended in Placerville, reliving the Old West, was a big thing in my childhood (we are talking 40s and 50s here, a while ago). Mainstreet was closed and a massive party was held that went into the wee hours. The fast draw contest was a highlight of the day. Drinking was a highlight of the night.

What a perfect childhood event – kinda like the trail rides to the rodeo here…before the RVs following. the wagons circled up at the biggest park the night before the parade for cookouts, beer – no ID checked-, and trail ride group awards…if you could talk your way onto a wagon for the parade, then you got to ride it all the way to the opening rodeo show in the downtown coliseum. Maybe even get to meet up close and in person the celebrity star in for the night performance. Ah we did have fun in the olde days
Thanks for taking a break in your wandering to chat!

So much fun. No ID, huh? Grin. Almost magical. Seems like it should have been illegal we were enjoying those event so much. Wait. Maybe it was.

Good Twain quote. You’re wrestling mulch, we’re wrestling bags of pond pebbles. Spring, depending where you are, seems to involve wrestling. Make it pretty, but try to not throw your back out in the process.

Spring wrestling! Got a chuckle over that. Probably will be the next olympic sport. (If you can throw your back out and get sore muscles, it’s a legit sport…)
We use small pond rocks as accent pieces by flowering plants in the dark mulch…but I’m putting rocking out off for a few days
Gotta stretch out the fun, right?
Thanks for tossing a comment in this direction

Love the Twain quotes. Quite a variety of to-do options. I think I’ll go for the art walk instead of the Iron Man. Our son-in-law did an Iron Man once in Louisville and I got tired just watching. The swimming would be the worst for me, but the rest wouldn’t be too good either. 😉

Just reading about all of those activities made me exhausted. (Maybe hire a body double like the celebrities, then dart in and change places for the last 5 minutes?)
Can’t go wrong with Twain. That’s for sure.
Thanks for spending some leisurely comment time here

You know what’s coming up this weekend, don’t you? It’s Keels and Wheels time over at Lakewood. I have two boats that have to be done by Thursday — I feel like a west Texas jackrabbit trying to cross a highway without being smooshed by that oncoming semi! I sure hope they have less wind and no rain for the event; the attendees could take it, but those vintage car and wooden boat owners are persnickety!

Oh, you spilled the beans! (No sure what the forecast is…another big system moving in sometime. Knowing the upcoming event, I’ve tried not to interrupt you, but will catch up once you’ve recovered! Have you been to the Dudley birdwatching reopened park?…like you have time right now. Hang in there. Thanks for managing time to comment ( and post…you must be the energizer bunny)

I’m exhausted just reading this. Do nothing option tick. Mulch flower beds if I must tick. Mark Twain tick.
