Falling at breakneck speed.

Person in graveyard looking up. (1981 Fear No Evil film with Elizabeth Hoffman.USPD: Publicity still to promote film, no CR notice, artist life, pub.date/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Is that it? When all the details fit perfectly, there’s probably something wrong with the story? Doyle said, “As a rule, the more bizarre a thing is, the less mysterious it proves to be.” Unless there’s dramatic lighting…I added that last part.(USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Backpacks have barely hit the shoulders and it’s already too late.

So it’s grab what sense you can: Spicy, Signs, and Pet Fines Finds.

1. It’s true: all the old looked-forward-to traditions are melting away: Ignore the still upper 90F temp’s: Once the schools are in session, it’s time for pumpkin spice drinks! Yeah, that’s a bit heavy and nauseating right now. Yeah, you can order it cold, but it’s not the same “Welcome Fall” type of feeling. Just not ready to spice it up.

2. Signs of the times: Starbucks havin’ some employee issues. Seriously, they have a point here: a barista waving a sign: “Short staffing is Union busting!” Darn right! Hire more tall people, Starbucks. Handing out coffee to cars needs body length.

3. Can we live without Email nagging suggestions? I’d like to try. Thank you Chewy’s for making me feel even more inadequate. Got a note that their Halloween Pet Shoppe is now open. offering (free of charge) ideas to make your pet’s Halloween a special day. (Like living everyday here isn’t special enough?)

For years I have smugly resisted and laughed at pet costumes (Luckily, I do not have a guinea pig – those are darn cute. But seriously…is that a violation of pet rights and freedoms? PETA? Waiting for you to weigh in here…).

I may have to lurk in the underbrush on dog walks. One neighbor spent hours and hours sewing a Halloween costume for Willow, her perfectly coiffured Great Pyrenees  (with that breed’s calm Zen-like attitude). Then search for hours online to find dog Halloween costume contests to enter. “Well, the dog deserved to show it off.” Really? Good her dog is totally Zen-like.

There are pet costumes by themes now to match your family’s costume theme for trick or treating…You are planning, of course, to take your pet along, too..Pets can’t wait to go out in the dark, garbed up oddly to encounter all sorts of noise and visual chaos on Halloween…I mean, I know pets have brightly circled the date already…

And if that’s not enough, now I’m supposed to be also acquiring pet Halloween costumes accessories, ordering “Boo-tiful” Halloween pet treats, and my dog will be scarred for life if I don’t purchase a special Halloween toy?   (We used to joke parents bought big monohull sailboats once their kids became teenagers in order to sail far far away from commercialism and social pressures. The internet crashed that! Who knew we’d have to distract our pets’ attention from all that, too?)

Terrified woman against wall. 1960 film Psycho. Paramount Pix/Shamley Productions/USPD. no CR notice, artist life, pub.date/Commons.wikimedia.org)

“Nooo! Once ridiculed for a child’s trite Halloween costume, now facing being cancelled because of pet costuming refusal?”(Appropriately from the 1960 film Psycho. USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Hank, the new pup, not feeling shorted.  He said he’d had enough of horror shows before landing here and intends to celebrate feeling like Christmas all the way to New Years. Whew.

Oh, by the way, The Realm applauds Hank’s selected title of HRH – standing for “Happy R Hank“. Like I said when we first saw him, “He’s a perfect fit.”  (Counter surfing addiction rehab in progress. “Paws and Disorder” tagline still so appropriate…)

A tall order to sandwich blogging time in right now. Daylight Saving Times, no help – awake, able to function, and be productive just so many hours – no matter what the current humans-in-charge set the clock and pace at.

We’re in a brief spell between Sr. Staff’s treatments. So far so good, we hope. We’ll know in a few weeks.

Getting Hank used to car riding for road trips eventually. (What? Leave him in boarding? Right. Provide the opportunity for him to chat with others and come home hinting for formal wear? With his coat becoming very elegant – like “Bond. James Bond” elegant – a black satin bow tie soon might be requested.)

See. All the handsome, young guys with shaggy hair and striking blue eyes consider a satin black tie the perfect accessory.(C.Hickey/flickr/Commons.wikimedia.org)

While social influencers and seasonal merchants can’t wait to slam Summer to the curb (which seems sad when not too long ago, “Summer” was the hottest thing), how ’bout joining me by dragging a toe old school style to slow the spin down just a little?

Yes, Summer should get a speeding ticket!

(Why do lions move out at the end of summer? Because the pride goeth before the fall)

Warning: Candy corny season is upon us.

It’s raining (finally…Hank has already decided he doesn’t like getting his feet wet – the sidewalk is just fine.)
Help – the Halloween ads are everywhere for merchandise. Cooler weather is fine, but don’t rush the holidays. Oh, OK. Following the business channel’s advice, We have almost completed holiday shopping – easier to relax in Dec.and enjoy without fighting the mobs – and it will be all paid for before unwrapped. That was always aa big thing with my dad: Have the gift paid for before it is given. Has worked so far. Thanks for keeping a lookout for the Unfortunate Children and the Orange Vegetable Invaders

A friend rescued a greyhound. Talk about counter surfing. He swallowed a whole pie no problem. He’s partial to blueberry! Unfortunately she’s a short person with a tall dog so everything has to be out of reach…for both of them. The good news is that he doesn’t know how to use a stepladder.

Can’t underestimate a greyhound – they look lazy, but really fast to “capture” lunch ( and not willing to share).Had to laugh as it reminded me of that Christmas show scene – both Chevy Chase’s Griswold and that one with the “you’ll shoot your eye out” red riffle.
Thanks for the smile and the tasty comment

You can slow down summer if you like, but I’m more than ready for fall: or pre-fall, if that’s what we have to take. Cooler temperatures and more rain sounds just fine. Being able to work a full day or a dozen would mean better cash flow, after all. Water isn’t the only thing this heat evaporates!

The thought of either canine or feline counter surfing is highly amusing. I was one of the lucky ones, since Dixie Rose never once made for a counter or table, but I do have a friend who lost an entire Thanksgiving pie to her hound. Remember the scene in “Christmas Story” where the neighbors’ dogs ran off with the entire turkey? Don’t let Hank watch that one!

definitely ready for a break in the heat – so hard to complain about the rain the past few days – we’ve had just the right kind. Some of the plants seem to be wakening up from their summer survival snooze and are ready to perk up and bloom. Lots of bees and butterflies around.
(We are a tad worried as Hank seems to closely examine the Subaru commercials with the family of golden retrievers…if I find a study guid for the driver’s test laying around….)

I’ve yet to humiliate any of my pets with a costume, unless you count the occasional Christmas collar.

Walked into my Dunkin’ and saw PUMPKIN FLAVOR HERE. It’s the middle of August. Too soon, people. I love my Pumpkin Spice flavor as much as anybody, but there needs to be some kind of restraint. It’s not special if it is available for 1/4 of the year. That being said, high temps below 80 are not normal for August. Very welcome. Just not normal. Why do lions move out at the end of summer…I see what you did there. I am sure pets know when Halloween is, but I’m not sure of their collective interest in dressing up. I’m pretty sure if I tried to dress up my cat back in the day I’m confident I’d be reaching for the antiseptic shortly thereafter.

But then you would have an authentic (and cheap) Halloween costume. Obviously the cat would have had that in mind…always trying to assist you, cats are. HaHa

My parents had an extremely fluffy tuxedo cat. She would sit very quietly on the porch Halloween night and watch the kids. Every once in a while she’d scare them by moving.

Personally, I’ll be glad to see Summer’s backside . . . and wouldn’t mind if it took a vacation for a few years and just let Spring and Fall carry the extra burden.

As for dressing pets . . . eons ago, when wolves first approached campfires for food, they struck a bargain they might not have fully understood . . . but a bargain they struck, and there’s no going back; pink tutus, pirate britches, and what-not are all part of that bargain.

I think our seasonal plan well grounded. I can do without the endless hours of glaring sun, but just can’t face the rushing of Halloween in the stores and overheated fumes of pumpkin spice until temperatures drop below 90F.
Wolves and those breeds closely related….who don’t /won’t expect or tolerate being turned into little humans…just more honest. (Although I did get shamed at the dog place for not having even a red bow for Valentines on Molly one time…I thought they were kidding…they were kidding, right? She came home with one…
Thanks for hanging in here through the sweltering absences

I remember the days when I was growing up and dogs were dogs. It was before they became a major profit center. If they had a fatal disease, they were allowed to die in peace instead of spending $10,000 dollars on them so they could suffer through a few more months. “Oh but he still wags his tail when he sees me.” And it was definitely before speciality Halloween stores were dedicated to costuming them. We loved and enjoyed our pets as much as anyone, but it was a different world. –Curt

Some are confused about “compassion” – for them, not selfishly by the owner for their own needs. Life is hard. Easier when one works with nature rather than against it. Walk gently – and stay out of the pet costume aisle! Everyone will be grateful!

Our summer had exited quickly, leaving in its place early fall. Don’t expect this in August but I’ll not complain about low humidity and high in the 80s. Gotta love the good stuff.

Did you avoid the end of summer/first of fall rains? Hard to complain, but it’s getting soggy here…but clouds keep the temperatures down. And the plants seem to be saying, “OK, we’ll try to start looking alive again.”
Can’t believe the Halloween stuff is out already – if I see the big bags of candy I will probably grab one as apparently candy is predicted to be in short supply for trick or treat time. Then again, maybe a shortage is a good thing…really don’t need to be eating any of the let over candy.
