You animal.

Two girls in costumes. (Image screenshot: iSpot.tv)

Well, you have to start somewhere. (Image screenshot: iSpot.tv)

Run wild. Run free

Naturally

Painted up as you zoom

To invade their living room.

Into the woods with kids in costumes and a dog!

A family out to enjoy nature and the real off-road world experience. You’ll buy that, right?

  • Yep, dress the Littles up as their inner animal (so far so good…a bit of research or at least animal pictures closely examined…OK, from costume sites)
  • Then, speed away in an SUV (For pretend in the woods? Super idea…even if a bit of human erosion from the drive…Moving on)
  • Where’s the discovery night hike with a dim flash light (Every sound becomes spooky!), or fighting over a telescope (to view the dark sky and wonder session about the stars and other worlds’ creatures), or camp fire of woodsy tales? Nope, they haul out a white sheet to drape between trees to screen a bright, loud video they brought from home.
  • Hey! Everyone’s definition of “wild and free” is different.
  • Watch the SUV commercial here. A catchy tune.

Bring the party with you. Augmented reality. (image.screenshot: ispot.tv)

Reminds me of when we used to pack up the catamaran and tent and head towards some big lake in a deserted state park.

After finally settling down at a sunset around the fire ready to enjoy the quiet and dark night skies – only to have a monster Winnebago pull in and park – right next to us – the whole park mostly empty – and turn on their loud generator, lights and TV.

Yep, nothing like getting back to nature.

Even with a bit of mixed messaging, the “Seek your wild side” car promotion was slick, cute, and probably effective.

Nature alone isn’t exciting enough these days, I guess.

Each generation seems to be more distanced, and more detached from Nature – losing basic understanding of the environment.

Stick with me kid. My searches are the natural kind – no bread crumbs or screens needed. (Image screenshot. iShot.tv)

Could explain why that young Florida restaurant owner was so agitated during his news interview.

He had struggled through so much with COVID shutdowns. Tourism is their only hope. And now THIS!

“If we can send a man to the moon, why can’t they fix THIS?!!!!!” he complained loudly. (Stupid Nature.)

The THIS needing fixing was the Red Tide surfing all along the coastal beaches on the Gulf Side. Really mad about it.

Uh, it’s Red Tide – a natural occurrence:  seasonal, constant, and normal as the massive numbers of jellyfish wintering under the docks and piers in Palacious, TX each winter or the salmon swimming to the Pacific Northwest.

According to National Ocean Service, “Most blooms, in fact, are beneficial because the tiny plants are food for animals in the ocean. In fact, they are the major source of energy that fuels the ocean food web.” (Cool NOA video about Red Tide and human health here)

Of course with the recent ever-changing “Listen to our the science-ish messages”, everyone is constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop, and Florida got it in red.

Stuck with the stinky fish-killing, beach trashing, tourist running-off kind of algae bloom.

Not really needed or requested.

Surely Nature could time this better – out of consideration. After all, humans are the top of the food chain…look we’re the ones with iPhones and computers!

Seriously,  Nature should straighten up ASAP! (Insert stomping feet and a demanding “fix it” temper tantrums here)

Inconvenience for one species. Over unexpected consequences for the entire interconnected environment.

A total disconnect by some about how how things are work.

The last line above is responsible for some really funny stuff.

(EPA’s comment about climate change and Red Tide here. I knew someone would mention it…Along with the opposite view that the sun is weakening and so the climate will be cooling for 30 years here.)

Funny, “HaHa”, or Funny, “peculiar”? Mixed messages, as usual, are always up to you.

Waved paradise and put up a snarky lot.

Phil, the Philosopher Mouse of the Hedge.

Speaking of natural, is this? Mark says so.

  • “Mark Zuckerberg is betting Facebook’s future on the metaverse” (The Verge) Mark Zuckerberg quote from interview: “Who gets to augment reality?”
  • Matthew Ball’s piece on “The Metaverse (What it is, where to find it who will build it…)with links to the nine part update Metaverse Primer
  • Who will build it? Who will govern it? AI, VR, AR. All up in the air right now. Oracle, prophecy, or warning? Always unexpected consequences. Things getting lost, naturally. Wild, indeed.

Reason #73982 I’m glad I got rid of my televisions, along with its commercials. As for ‘science,’ the latest CDC guidance was based on a vaccine not used in the US, and cases from India: a study that wasn’t peer reviewed, at least at the time. Part of the problem tracks back to Chicken Little. Just as labeling every summertime thunderstorm the next coming of Hurricane Harvey leads to people tuning out all advice, the same is happening with the recent unpleasantness. The CDC needs a lesson or two in how to communicate complex information in an understandable way.

I have the study. As you say, very small cohort – not peer reviewed or even close from looking at the methodology. (One thing that must be noted even if methodology is better than it appears, this is India with people crammed together tightly, very low vaccine rate even if the vaccine worked much at all, study said questionable if people actually had vaccines and how many of the 2 doses they actually had – totally different lifestyle social conditions- so for the WH spokes person to answer with “we look at what is coming out of other countries with their covid experience which may be a few weeks ahead of it arriving here and can predict what will happen here”….Uh, too many variables to count – may not be applicable to this country at all. Sham attempt or not understanding.
(There’s also a very small study equally of use study from China)
Oddly that AstraZeneca vaccine was emerging again yesterday for US approval despite the “issues” with it. If it gets approved for use with that study out there….
Botched implementation of fighting COVID. All the misrepresentation of what are actual facts. Stoking the hysteria to the point even gullible believe it. CDC, those lovely people that published “How to survive a Zombie Apocalypse” that taxpayers paid for – not to mention being caught flat with Ebola outbreak. CDC needs to remember they do not make laws – just present information- it’s supposed to be independent of the WH and only give out hard facts.
Wish they would say these Delta cases are much milder and most just go home. It may spread in half the time, but not as all as deadly to healthy individuals without pre-exising conditions….but that would be the whole truth.
CDC might also wish to mention the rise in cases in TX and many border states have an additional cause…. maybe also presenting the hard facts that sick people are flooding across the southern border – without vaccines and being flown/ bussed now to middle sized towns across the country. A member of congress is asking why 70-80 immigrants have been bused and turned loose three nights in a row in Shreveport, La ..crickets.
Citizens demonized and threatened, yet “new arrivals” just told go wherever you wish. Elis Island had a purpose. Australia ha a similar concept even now.
Wait until schools start and all those migrant kids are sitting in classrooms. (and most of those haven’t have any normal childhood disease vaccines ever) There will be outbreaks from schools like crazy and the CDC/FDA will be pushed to mandate vaccines for every single child.
Regular flu killed twice as many kids 2019-2020 as Covid did in one year. All CDC official data.
      Unmask the kids. It’s abuse.
      Emperor has no clothes.
Thanks for brining up what is becoming more and more obvious to all.

I’m not a camper but I have friends who are. I’m always amazed at how “souped up” their camper is. Not sure where the nature part fits in. Sometimes I think they do it to get away from their neighbors.

The lux camping now has little resemblance to how we camped growing up. There’s something character building about skunks running under your cot in the tent in the middle of the night. The RV people are missing out! HaHa
      Thanks for touring this space.

Along with the lux rv campers owned by so many — increasing numbers of rental rv campers are coming into the Park. Scary for us at the entrances as many of those driving are not exactly skilled at handling the vehicles. Some don’t speak English, so no way to warn about switchbacks ahead, animals having right-of-way, no driving on the tundra. Afraid we will be back in masks in Estes- even fully vaccinated- soon. Numbers waaay up in Grand County and rising in Larimer. Sigh. But there is a mama moose with twin calves hanging around Sprague Lake this year, so good things are definitely to be found! (I liked the fun of the improvised drive in movie, though simply enjoying nature is more my style)

OMG. I had forgotten how old and small some of those ranger check point/park entrances are. New owners/drivers are bound to cause damage to those narrow places….backing up lines and causing tempers to get even shorter. I just don’t think I could bear to watch the mobs. Trail Ridge – even Fall River old road must be a real trial now as people get into situations they aren’t prepared for. Few have the manners or skill to pull off at overlooks to let the line behind through…if there’s room at the overlooks! Dad hated driving behind RVs even waaaaay back then…slow awkward turtles.
The drive-in movies is a good idea as it’s not the only outdoor experience – you gotta get kids out there to see it…and besides at the end of the day to calm kids down and get them ready for sleep when the kids absolutely have to crash early because you have an early entry time for the gates! Ya’ do what ya gotta do!
Masks. Tourists are big business there and here, but they also mean more risk for locals. Luckily while the transmission timing for Delta is very very short, the virus load/particles carried is very big ( and even vaccinated can carry unknowingly without feeling sick), this is a weaker virus causing much less illness to full vaccinated individuals with good immune systems and no underlying conditions like Lupus, cancer, leukemia, and weak auto-immune systems. AS long as you have taken a vaccine other than Astra Zeneca, you’ve got some protection. That one’s a big fail) The big med center says, most are sent home with sniffles and fever once diagnosed. The thing about masks is once again if they are the wrong kind, do not fit properly and tightly, are damp, are touched too much by hands, been worn too long – they are of limited use. Some need whatever protection those offer however. With the discomfort caused by heat, it’s just easier to stay away from people. I swear masks make my eyes for up. Hoping for an early snow for you guys (and some commonsense by your Gov) – and more time without tourists for the animals! Take care and thanks for pulling up to this campfire. Paw waves to all the kitties!

While I think the Red Tide is icky, I also realize that it happens. How could you ever live in FL and not know that, oh distraught restaurant owner? As for camping, not a fan– but people I know who do it have very upscale everything that costs quite a lot, from what I can tell. It’s not an inexpensive vacay anymore.

It is gross – we get it here, too..along with periodic rafts of seaweed which is equally stinky and makes the beaches unpleasant – pretty much unusable. They use machines to scrape it/pick it up, but Still stinks and in the water sometimes. Lakes in August always sound so pretty – and clean. Florida is smart in that they do have websites that track Red Tide for tourists who are trying to book vacations.
My time dealing with tents is over. RV’s are too expensive, RV parks look hot and crowded – and getting a reservation for a park spot is nearly impossible so I am told ( besides those park campgrounds are over crowded, too.)I miss the outdoor park nights (they have these ranger talks and storytelling campfires and you walk down paths to get there and back…they probably have lights own those trails now…a bit sad) and dark sky, but there are cabins and balconies…once football season and schools drain off a good part of the tourists.
Thanks for camping out here with a comment

What lonely state park? Where? What quiet times in the wilderness? When I was a kid, yes. Nowadays, it seems like that’s where everyone is going to escape everyone else — the result is reservations to go at all. It’s not Nature that needs to straighten up; it’s humans. They’re the ones paving paradise and putting up parking lots, skyscrapers, and fences.

Seems like a fairy tale these days…..most irritating back then when few liked “roughing it” to have a monster RV pull in right next to you.
Somewhere the “leave no trace behind” concept got lost, too.
Yep you summarized the situation exactly.
Stay cool up there – thanks for parking a comment here

Your story reminds me of a time back in college (yes, all those many, many years ago) when four of us went on a bike trip. Set up our tent…then had someone pull in next to use with a big TV, et al. Sigh. The trip ended up getting rained out so my memories are of that camping experience and spending a great deal of one day in a laundromat trying to dry our or things. 🙂

    Climate change or weather change?

Seems i remember that many of the same bunch sounding the alarm on ”global warming” today were crying about a coming ”ice age” in the ’80s. Now I’m all for protecting the environment; conserving resources, reducing pollution & etc… But the Climate is in a lot bigger hands than mine. Despite what the Bidens of the world believe, He is in control.
