Shelter animals hit the roads and skyways

White dog looking at camera. Pet transport before Hurricane Laura ( Petset FB)

“I know some of you worry, but wanted to let you know it’s OK. This area knows hurricanes. An army of volunteers and shelter staffs are looking out for us. Oh, they’ve called my boarding number. Ready to fly in the friendly skies!”(Petset FB)

“Private accommodations! We have private compartments – not shoving and sharing. Blankie, ice chips in a bowl. Boy, if the pack could see me now. Me, a plain brown dog down on his luck suddenly on a chartered jet! To Virginia. Perfect place for a new start. Optimistic there’s a home waiting for me there!”(Petset FB)

“I know you told me to go before we left, but I didn’t need to then. Ignore the planes, ignore the golf carts loaded with cats. That grassy patch over there looks perfect.”German shepherd on Hobby Airport tarmac being evacuated before Hurricane Laura (Petset FB)

A quick post to reassure that no animal is to be left behind.

Governor Abbott came out very early with messages that animals will be allowed on all evacuation transports and that pets should not be left behind in homes, yards, garages, porches, or in boats on a trailer in the driveway (Yes, someone did that the last time…dog was safe and rescued but that’s just so not a great solution).

Accommodations will be found for displaced animals.

There’s quite a network between shelters.

For the past 3-4 days, vans, trucks, even charter planes have been running between the coastal and low-lying areas to Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, and even out of state. All the shelters are moving animals to allow room for incoming lost/homeless animals.

You can read/see videos about the pet transports here (200 animal to Virginia from Hobby airport), here, (Austin Pets Alive received 73 transported animals late last night and have found room for 300 more) or here (Petset bus picking up animals in Port Aurthur and heading for Austin)

Thank you, Wings of Rescue.

“Wings of Rescue “Lets The Fur Fly” by flying large scale transports of healthy at-risk pets from both disaster areas and overcrowded shelters to shelters where there is empty kennel space and where no local shelter pets are displaced by our flights”.

Thank you, Baseball pitcher Lance McCullers Jr Foundation for funding the big bus (Video about he and his wife’s commitment here)

Thank you Petco for supporting PetSet and this pet saving transport.

Of course, thank you PetSet. (See their FB page here for the stories and videos)

“Let’s spread the word, #ForTheAnimals! Our pets will need us more than ever during this time. Thank you all for your continued support! We’ll always do what we can to save as many animals as possible, and your donations drive these efforts. To donate online: bit.ly/HurricaneLaura.”

Today we’ve had quite a but of sun and heat with a few showers from passing grey clouds.

Hurricane Laura is scheduled to arrive late tonight somewhere east of us if it holds on track. And we are expecting rain.

Molly Malamute is enjoying the wind, but not a fan of long periods of rain…she keeps muttering “If you really cared, you’d charter a plane…Not really!” But I think there will be quite a crowd on the bed tonight.

Unto every life some rain must fall…some…that’s the key…”some”

Thanks! Now I won’t worry about them. I’ll focus on the animals in the wildfires. So much going on all at the same time. Fortunately I don’t run out of worry. Bless all who help.

This is dedication to the max! When I was active with Japanese Chin rescue many years ago, they did a frequent “Chin Lift” from the Midwest US to the west coast. It always reminded me of how prevalent puppy mills are in the Midwestern states. It is always a worry when storms or catastrophes hit, how both domestic and wild animals/birds/reptiles survive. It’s good to know helping hands are at the ready!

Stay safe, I cannot imagine what you and the people of Texas and Louisiana are going through.

We made it through fine, but East TX pine trees may never be the same. They missed on the storm surge, but the winds were powerful. SW Louisiana got slammed – and now it’s going to Little Rock…Little Rock must be the magnet for storms – they all seem to head there before going on.
At least the storm got politics and stupid millionaire athletes off the news for a bit.
Thanks for wishing the storm away

Been worried about you but good to hear all is well, more or less. Especially with the animals. Broke my heart back when the Red Cross wouldn’t let people take their pets. Pets are family, not just random wild animals.
