WordPress founder claims Apple cut off updates to his completely free app because it wants 30 percent
“WordPress, the iOS app, lets you build and manage a website right from your iPhone or iPad, for free.
Separately, WordPress.com also happens to sell domain names and fancier website packages.
Now, WordPress founding developer Matt Mullenweg is accusing Apple of cutting off the ability to update that app — until or unless he adds in-app purchases so the most valuable company in the world can extract its 30 percent cut of the money….”

“…Mullenweg told us that he had previously offered to strip other mentions of the paid plans out of the app (even workarounds like when a user views a preview of their own WordPress webpage and then navigates to WordPress.com), only to have those suggestions rejected by Apple.
So, to the best of my knowledge, this isn’t WordPress caving yet again. Apple simply seems to have decided that trying to extract its cut from a free app — by forcing in-app purchases — isn’t a hill worth dying on today.”

Been reading elsewhere, in the news, that this has happened with a few other apps also. Something has to give.

Yes apparently this battle is being fought on multiple fronts. To claim to be such a socially conscious/responsible company yet….

I like the apple products, but like so many other things (as you point out) there is rot at the core.

It’s gotten really difficult to keep up with things that might actually affect you with the onslaught of information constantly incoming.
As with most things, they are examining the benefits of apples…the edible ones not the apples of eyes or cheeks.

Nope – you’ll love the ease and “no thinking required” of Apple. Microsoft is just as much of a monster mess…and that one gets really brain cell destroying and annoying trying to get it to play nice sometimes. Had enough of that at work and finally got an Apple at home. Never looked back, but it’s not the same company any more (shhh it may be listening HAHA)

If only big tech would only maul each other (like some vintage Godzilla vs King Kong movie) and leave the rest of us alone. WP has always been a free entry platform – while many pay for hosting and ease, charging changes everything. Thanks for lifting a weary comment

Being the first keyboard I ever laid my fingers on [Mac Plus!] and the ultimate designer tool, it’s hard to work on another computer. However, my ‘affection’ for them has gone out the window from the moment that I could no longer open my mac and mingle with it and more so when I heard about child labour and appalling working conditions. Didn’t help when I learned that Steve Jobs, never let his own children have even an ipod [and he was right of course]! But that’s another conversation. 😉 So, I’m not surprised.

Having real difficulty reconciling great products with the hypocrisy of shouting “social justice”…but only here….”Nothing to see over there…do not look at production/manufacturing practices over there…” Virtue facade so trendy these days.
And you are right about their kids – people would be stunned at how many high level tech people send their kids to schools that ban devices and use pencil and paper saying “They have all the technology/screen use they need at home” Solid thinking. Elites will have both tech skills and all the use to be basics like reading (both print, info in cursive writing, and signatures), writing, math, geography, scientific method, persuasive techniques and how to use them….
Talk about some being left behind.
How Apples’ direction and focus has changed. Was that all a dream?

Hypocrisy indeed and the nerve/audacity teaching us morality right?!! As for Jobs I think he didn’t want his children to ever come near technology… home or school and taking into account that he actually had a working brain, that means something. Not to take it a bit further to mention how much more dependent and bound they’ll have us with tech in the name of ‘health’.
