Traditional Thanksgiving treks of “over the drizzle and through the suds” on the horizon
All that upcoming stress and expense could be pushing some to be more dunderheaded than usual.
Warning: Two guys that probably shouldn’t be out without a keeper?
Couple of guys stole a builder’s 2018 pickup….complete with a gym bag containing security cameras the owner uses on his work sites. Motion detecting Critter cams…you probably guess what’s next.
One of them gleefully unzipped the bag and shows off the contents…contents which took great pictures of both of them.

Split decision with people up in arms over schools.
The State dropped the other shoe and formally announced it was taking over HISD, the 7th largest school district in the country, for multiple reasons.
Just this one should be enough:
For SEVEN YEARS, one high school has been state ranked as “failing and unacceptable”. Each year the state snarled, “Fix it or we will” and respectfully backed off. For seven years, the superintendents and school boards brushed that aside with “Oh, we got it. Don’t worry.”
No longer amusing.
How many kids went through that high school in SEVEN YEARS? Have to hope their middle school teachers, knowing what was ahead, did their best to give their students skills to survive despite school district negligence. Malpractice.
Wheatley High School is historically important. People fought like crazy to save the original 1929 building which had seen so many students go on to be famous including George Foreman and Congresswoman/lawyer/educator Barbara Jordan (who I thought would be not just the first black president, but also the first woman president. We lost a good one there). The current award winning $35 million building was unveiled in June 2006. It’s beautiful. Now’s the time to get serious and make the learning inside beautiful again, too.
About time. (And don’t say it. The school board has been minority majority, as is the city, for a very long time. Insisting students must be given a solid education and making moves to do so is not racist.)
Parents and the entire community should be applauding, not complaining.
Everyone knows that tails can be told out of school.

(We have firmly told Molly Malamute, no way to this style of travel, so now she’s looking at convertibles…she could still have some of those classy Doggles, right? She’s undecided between the Doggles with the pink frame and sunset mirror lenses or the pink zebra frames with smoke lenses. Any suggestions?)

Locally the city school district has been on the brink for many years. Not enough money for a variety of reasons (tax breaks to lure business back in, mostly rentals with slum landlords, transient kids moving all the time). It’s unfortunate because some great people came out of it in the day. Now there are armed guards. When I went to high school I worried more about runs in my stockings, not getting shot. There are still some very good teachers there so I have hope.

HISD was once a great school district: even though the schools has been multilingual immersion since WW II (there was German, French, Dutch, along with the Spanish, then added in a huge number of Vietnamese, Asian, then middle Eastern – now some 140 home languages with the kids – it’s pretty international here) and there have always been a lot of poverty – but with the way the state funds districts (property taxes add to the local school taxes people pay) the city’s district has a lot of money – so much it has to send a state mandated percentage to poor districts ( without businesses or industries to pay taxes there). Recently there’s been a good bit of citizen concern over priorities of how the money was spent…recent school boards and superintendents were more more interested in flash and appearances than kids’ education. (Our school buildings are in architectural magazines!..but the kids can’t do math and read poorly…) An experienced strong superintendent can manage a dysfunctional school board. For several years, they couldn’t find anyone to apply for superintendent position: candidates took one look/meeting with this board and ran. It’s absurd how this bunch is at each other’s throats all the time and forgotten they are supposed to be looking out for all kids of all ethnicities and backgrounds – not just their own. It’s all about power. Gads. Just absurd.

Locally the big struggle with with charter schools which suck money from the public schools. It’s a downward spiral. The charter schools haven’t had the same scrutiny either so that is changing. I went to a parochial school for grammar (1 thru 8 — do they still call it grammar school?). No tuition, mean or maybe just strict nuns. I don’t remember any bullying. We each took our turn getting teased but no one was a constant victim. However when I switched to public for high school, I was ahead of the kids. Those nuns gave a good education. Of course back then, parents backed teachers.

The last bit reminds me of the paddleboard dude who cruises through the marina from time to time with this dog on the front of the board. I once spotted them going past Portofino Harbor in the Clear Creek channel, which seemed unnecessarily risky to me, but there was an incoming tide, so if they went over, at least they wouldn’t have ended up at Smith Point.

Sometimes paddle boarders drift around the little backwater between the marina and the bridge to the island…usually calm and sheltered by the bulkheads and tall banks, but we’ve seen some very large snakes and there’s the gators…is there a contingency plan for capsizing I wonder?There’s an ankle leash with the board, is the dog leashed? The bulkheads are so high in so many places, what would you do? some have more confidence and worry less than I do, I guess. OR ignorance is bliss.
We’ve seen dogs riding in backpacks attached to the motorcycle driver. Those dogs must be much calmer and less excited by squirrels than ours HaHa.

I so hope someone identified the guys who stole the truck. That’s so fantastic that he had a camera there.
