Big Box Blocks

“What, me worry? I’m not crated and there’s another big box of Greenies in the pantry. So what’s the worry?” (© image)

Ear plugs stuffed in. The drama, the scorn, the wrath begins.

How about a reality check instead of a cashable check.

“You cannot be serious. I cannot possibly show up to school with THAT.”

Watching the local “experts” brainwashing advising about the trends and must haves for back to school, I have to pity anyone outfitting college kids

Shiny blenders for all. A colorful “retro” trunk for extra storage. (“No, mom. The grey or olive green one in the attic won’t do. Dents do not make it vintage”)

An absolute must of a $200.00 coffee machine for the dorm. Kids getting the chic coffee these days. Parents just get the bills.

“Mom you don’t want people to think we are poor! Oh, I need this cute waffle machine, too. Iron? As in iron clothes? Why? There’s a cleaners across from campus.”

Talk about setting a kid up for future debt acceptance.

Hmm, how about an instant coffee jar wrapped with a note: “Pick courses that add value, study hard so you can afford better than this once you graduate and get a job.”

But what do I know. Social media is probably a better source.

Talk about being boxed in, back to school shopping and road construction aren’t the only reason for gridlock around here.

PArking lot with 2 big crates. (Click2houston screenshot)

Two big boxes crated up and ready to roll-ish. It looked so good on paper.(Click2houston screenshot)

It’s the big boxes stored and snake bit from the start:

  • A pair of enormous crates holding massive drill ship equipment for Samsung Heavy are being inched along together through Houston from the NW Houston manufacturing site to the Bayport Cruise Terminal. Major traffic delays on several roads and power outages are to be expected for several days as they crawl along hoping to not hit anything. (map of route)
  • The massive crate scheduled to shut down I-45 Gulf Freeway Tuesday night has been rescheduled. (Ch 13 news)
  • How big? the largest is 56 feet long, 24 feet wide and 27 feet tall, with the smaller being 30 feet long, 16 feet wide and 24 feet tall.
  • Yep, you know that “best made plans” saying?  First night, a drunk driver ran into two motorcycle cops acting as escort. Seriously. It’s not like you can’t see these things and all the lights around them from some distance away. Maybe the driver, already having 2 other DWI charges, thought it was aliens landing and wanted to be the first to get cell phone footage to the news stations! Woo-whoo, not.
  • Anyway, the logistics team took the night off last night …probably, trying to get rid of their crashing headaches. A whole bunch of people are wondering how that parade is going to manage getting from the west side of I45 to the east side in order to get to the port. They’ve decided to avoid overpasses by going up up and away on the fairly new and narrow flyover down NASA Rd 1…only not only is it a fairly steep grade, there’s that extra sharp tilted curve at the top. Not to mention it’s a flyover…elevated…What is it rated for, we wonder…Crash that sucker and you block the main evacuation route from Galveston and the coast right in the middle of hurricane season.

It’s gonna be fun.

Almost as much fun as the 50 little darlings who blocked the intersection in a major shopping/tourist/entertainment area recently to do burn-outs and donuts in their cars while their fireworks display boomed and sparkled – all recorded by drones and posted on social media. (See pictures here)

Cops? (**crickets**). The event performers who call themselves the “new car sports enthusiasts” and “Professional Drivers” (Pardon me while I get up from the floor from laughing.)

And, they said, we, the public, should all be grateful for the entertainment and spectacle. And you can catch it again on social media!!!! All about me, me, me. Well, at least they aren’t out shooting people, right?

Guess that checks off all the boxes

    All about me, me, me.

Well there you have it. Social media used for external validation instead of as a way to make connections. Or maybe the connections are with others who need external validation? And then, of course, one MUST have the right objects in one’s life so that others, especially those on social media, will be duly impressed. You’re right, these kids are being set up to believe their worth is in how they present themselves to others, then pay for things whenever. If at all.

I’m still stuck on the dimensions of that “box.” Yikes! Those are big suckers. Something has to go wrong. As for kids, they should hope they don’t end up with a Darwin award.

The dynamic crate duo moves at 2 miles an hour…or less. With this 98F+ heat and at that pace, no wonder the human escorts hoofing down the pavement are needing a day off. OF course everyone is muttering “This is like building a sailboat in a basement. Why didn’t they put the darn thing together at the port?” Husband says it was probably the low bid.

Really have to wonder about those big boxes. Nobody got an A there. Hope Samsung paid big for the disruption. As for college. We gave the daughter X amount of money to meet costs. She was welcome to go above and beyond, but it was on her. Did wonders for reducing frills. Better yet the son. Sent him off to Annapolis where frills aren’t allowed and all costs are covered. 🙂 –Curt

Holy cow, what a mess! As for college “necessities”, students would be better served if they were to have a class in money management and were responsible for as many of their own expenses as possible, at least these types of “necessities.”and then there’s the ridiculous cost of college itself.

Is it any surprise most college students see nothing wrong with spending grant/loan money meant for books/tuition on Spring Break trips? (statistics in business journal a few years back. I probably still have the articles.) Alternative reality is the only explanation – and clueless why people are paying and sending them to college.
Wonder if universities still offer the 4 year graduation guarantee? You take the prescribed courses and make the grades and bingo – you’re off and running. Then again many places offer fascinating courses that do not add value to resumé’s and many parents are fine with subsidizing/taking on loans for 5+ years of college life for their kids. A vicious cycle with university profit goals, lots of “free” money pushed at students, merchants glamorizing/marketing items, willing/not paying attention parents, and kids being kids – wants and needs.
Yep, your suggestion about courses is valuable.
      Thanks for packing that in

All the government money is higher education is a big part of the problem. Get rid of that and tuition would have to plummet.

          Yep, good point.
People would also probably appalled at the huge amount of Dept of Edu. grant/research money going to higher ed/college/university/community college studies rather than to K-12 research to improve information delivery/teaching in those grades…when so many can’t read or do math at a 5th grade level – much less locate countries/states on a map – even after graduating from high school. Not to mention the school districts everywhere are absorbing many many new arrival pre-teen/teenagers who have never had any formal education – and they must get up to speed ASAP.
Better spend that available money wisely.

Let me second that “Yikes!” I heard about this on the news, but only as a generic road closure announcement. When I read that they’re going to take that pair over the NASA flyover, with that grade and that turn at the top — let me tell you, my blood ran cold. I just can’t imagine that’s feasible. Even getting the space shuttle under the Kemah bridge seems a piece of cake compared to this. I’m glad I’m not in any way responsible for any part of that little (!?!?) project. There are some sleepless engineers in the neighborhood, I suspect.

The boxes are now at intersection of FM 528 and Penny Lane blocking multiple lanes of traffic. I think that’s Friendswood (their FB page is trying to keep up to date with location – unlike certain news stations). Considering the distances and 1-2 MPH, not sure if they will attempt crossing I45 tonight as scheduled…if there’s any glitches or getting stuck, there would be massive chaos and outrage. It’ll be fun. Thanks for boxing in a comment here

Sr. Staff thinks they may try to navigate under/over I45 somewhere then travel the feeder by Academy/flyover and get on it after the elevated big curve…not sure there’s a way to do that…bet the are recalculating, recalculating constantly?

I’m trying — and failing — to imagine a flyover that could accommodate crates that big. But the “oversize load” sign on the front is good for a chuckle. Talk about understatement!
