Cheap labor ain’t dumb

Woman in hat and fur coat. (1920. LoC/USPD. Pub.date, artist life, gov. image/COmmons.wikimedai.org)

I can assure you they were not fighting over me.(USPD/Commons.wikimedai.org)

Management crossed the lines. They called a strike without even a heads-up to the union rep.

While they love their work, enjoy getting a project from here to there with little more than maybe fish on Friday, promises of respect wasn’t enough this time.

The boss man had forgotten that most of them had known each other all their lives. They were a team: to yell at one, was to attack all.

OK. Maybe they shouldn’t have been settling personal issues on company time. Joey shouldn’t have jumped his buddy during a break, but in their rough and tumble world, there’s always bound to be a little snipping, shoving, and leg pulling once in a while as much as they are running together.

As unit, they called a strike: the sled dogs all sat down.

Refused to budge an inch.

Watched other teams pass them.

Lost their five-hour lead.

“Peeved pets: Iditarod lead lost as dogs quit.”

The musher, Petit said, “It’s just a head thing,” he said. “We’ll see if one of these dog teams coming by will wake them up at all.” He’s camped until the dogs think he’s been punished enough.

The Alaskan Iditarod race started March 2nd in Anchorage with the winning team expected to arrive in Nome possibly mid-week. (History of the race here.)

Petit had high hopes this year after getting off course during a blizzard last year and losing the lead to come in second – ironically, close to this spot. (Keep up with the Iditarod teams here) Petit scratched yesterday.

Anyone who knows husky/malamute/sled dogs knows this is so typical.

Not your typical trained to obedience dogs, they have a strong sense of self, a definite streak of independent thinking, and love a good joke. Yes, they make jokes. And laugh about it with and at you.

Molly was spotted sitting in solidarity in our backyard: nose to the north wind.

She’s been all ears about the yearly race with relatives, possibly family, doing what they love and live for…running – even better with plenty of snow, too.

She steps into front row position when race appears on tv.

A distant wistful look in her eyes…and we keep finding the computer open to pages with snowy mountains and dog sleds. (Alaskan cruise lines? No.)

RC Cat says, “That is so husky-malamute.”

(“But with the proper state rooms…I’ve got my winter coat still on….”)

Sometimes it’s better to quit when you’re ahead.

Molly thinks they have cute booties on…but would probably strike if there weren’t greenies and a fireplace and a couch to stretch out on front of at the end of the day. A tale only for some tails! Thanks for running with the pack

I missed this news story and I am so pleased to have found out about it. What a hoot! Or maybe I should say: what a bark! Delightful.

Question: What kind of dog loves using the internet?

    Answer: A Cyber-ian Husky

You’d better keep an eye on things over there…

I watched several Iditarods take off, had an old girlfriend compete in one (she came in last) and persuaded Libby Riddles (the first woman to win the Iditarod) to become campaign chair for a non-profit I headed up. Libby loved her dogs and they returned her love. She won by racing through a storm that had the men hunkering down! –Curt

Sled dogs are such a different animal. If you earn their love and respect, treat them right, no greater ally.
One of my uncles drove and International (later those became Suburbans all over Alaska.)He was the wild motorcycle adventurer – and great fun – lots of wisdom picked up along the way.
Brother managed to visit all 50 states including Alaska ( and quite a bit of international travel with work), Someday I’ll get there. Sure would like to see the race off or ending….as well as interplanetary travel. You never know – got plenty of roughing it and camping experience. Have you signed up with Space X yet? Would be an out of this world experience for sure.
Thanks for sledding in here with a comment

I was there for three years, Phil and disappeared into the wilderness several times, including a winter trek into Denali with 30 degree below zero weather where I managed to go to sleep listening to the wolves howl. I’ve been back several times since. I picked Libby up at the airport where she had just finished doing a Vogue Magazine spread with sled dogs. 🙂

Is that true, do these dogs really spit the dummy and refuse to run? That’s marvellous if they do, I’m right with them!

Yep. Sled dogs are about like 3 yr old humans…but heavier and harder to move. They sat down. Watched others go by. They camped for the night. They scratched the next day: both itches and the race. Gotta love independent thinking dogs…mutter mutter…you did not hear Staff muttering about stubbornness and dog rules…
Have a nice weekend – cheers!

I love that, I’d love a dog like that, My Coco, if on the leash and doesn’t want to go, just sits back and pulls hard on the leash refuses to move but eventually surrenders to his make believe master! marvellous

Sled Dogs have their own little universe – and sense of justice….Molly gets quite determined/stubborn on walks at times…like trying to move a concrete lawn ornament – but oddly, sometimes she knows it’s about to rain long before we do..and we are all tired of getting drenched. Good to have thoughtful fur friends to help silly humans
Paw waves and warm sunny thoughts sent to brighten your weekend!

I suppose it is better to quit while you’re ahead.
Which is why I’ll never quit.
Thank you for another thought-provoking post.
