The bills. The crazed. The Russians.
Those Texas legislative jesters! Buddy Holly, Janis Joplin, T Bone Walker and a stageful of others must be rollin’ in their graves. What are they? Chopped liver? (Ignoring those “worm meat” comments.)
Craziness, like many things, is bigger in Texas.
One proposed bill, HB 2492, would create a new state holiday for Selena Quintanilla-Pérez – the Grammy winning Tejano singer who was tragically murdered by the fanatical president of her fan club in 1995.
Ah, the good die young. Sometimes called “The Mexican Madonna”, she was quite a trailblazer.
Still, an official state holiday? Feel free to honor and celebrate her all on your own.
It’s only fair as there are so many others – So many other important items that really need addressed by the Texas State Legislature.
Even more entertaining are the endless bills and debate sorting out Time itself.
Most deal with the annoyance of Daylight Savings Time, but the situation here is even more complicated since part of the state follows Central Standard Time while part of the state (West, TX) uses Mountain Time.
People are getting zoned out and really wish someone would just pick one and establish an official, no switching ever “Texas Time Zone” for all, once and for all.
The problem is in past years, some wanted to follow Eastern Standard Time.
Like that makes sense…Well, sort of, to some church goers and football fans.
You’ll like this part:
One Representative(D) from Dallas pushed for switching to Eastern Standard Time, He raised serious “potential conflicts with two sacred Texas traditions: church and Cowboys football.
If Texas stuck to Central Standard Time, then the traditional noon NFL games would kick off instead at 11 a.m. during the early part of the season (with Daylight Savings time still in effect). And that could conflict with many church services that conveniently start an hour before noon.”
“That messes up my whole Sunday,” he said. “I don’t want to miss church, and I don’t want to miss the Cowboys. So what am I supposed to do?”
Oh, the trials of those with dual religions.
Time out for the full 2015 story here, with the 2019 efforts to end Daylight Savings Time here.
No wonder Legislators find it easier to declare new holidays.

Kinda like England and Brexit?
Time for one and time for all…we should get to pick stuff and have it actually happen.
(Molly wants to pick an end to these days and weeks of endless sea fog and rainstorms. Soggy paw waves to you guys!)

I must be the only person in the world who likes the change to daylight saving. I love the extra hour of light in the summer. As for the legislature, if they didn’t declare stupid or unusual holidays, they’d have nothing in their accomplishment list. That’s not good for re-election! It isn’t any different in PA except we don’t have bacon roaming around free.

Everyone needs sunshine – physical and mental health (maybe if we let our kids get some during the school day, there would be less violence…office workers might also be happier…those stupid health damaging, depressing building lights – ugh!)
You know what we did here before forced on Daylight Savings time? Many companies simply switched and started work at 7 am instead of 8 am. Worked for me. Some even had/have a summer 4 day work week where office hours are a bit longer those 4 days – that was fabulous. (we got so much done before the average clients who didn’t know the schedule assumed we all “opened” at 8 and not before or closed later) People can find easy solutions. nice windows and outside spaces would help, too. We all know what time it is.
Term limits. The only way to stop elected officials only voting and producing bills in order to gain votes the entire time they are in office. Double ugh.
Lets go outside…bacon for all…uh, regular bacon – with eggs or hamburgers. Thanks for stopping the clock and commenting here

Oh, my heavens. I hadn’t heard about those Russian boars. Now I’m wondering… do you think they might be the answer to our problem with feral hogs. They look capable of sending the hogs out of state. Of course, we might have a different sort of problem then.
I’m firmly in the one state, one time zone, and don’t you dare change it camp. There are as many hours of daylight in a given season as there are, and the hour-number we put on them doesn’t make one bit of difference.
In the meantime, here’s your reminder: DST begins on March 10~! Be there, or be
squarelate.LikeLiked by 1 person
The darn hogs seem to be hitting the gym and muscling up. CA. was also foolish enough to import them years ago in an attempt to please hunting tourists years ago – what a mess. People always thought they were a myth here. Invasive and worse than weeds.
I agree with your timely remarks. It’s stupid. Consider this post a wake up to what’s coming …if the clouds ever break. geesch, this weather.
Thanks for winding up for the spring that’s ahead!

The whole daylight savings time paradigm is nutty, imo. I relate to your two time zone problem. We live in EST but close enough geographically to the next state and time zone over, that is supposed to be all CST but isn’t completely. Then when we spring forward or fall back, life gets even more confused. I understand the time zone decisions but to add daylight savings time on top of it… crazy-making, I tell you.

You shined the light on a real problem – shifting is crazy-making…data shows an upswing each year during the switch times.

Time zones are a problem everywhere! Even where we don’t have a split state. I wish the whole nation would just pick on and get over it. Ha ha. We would all adjust. And enjoy your new state holiday. Do banks and schools get to close? We need a Lewis and Clark day up here (if we don’t have one already). 🙂 And my, those are big pigs. Sort of scary.

Yawn…just practicing up for the switch HAHA. Schools here normally try to time Spring Break the week of Daylight Savings time. They just gave up trying to cope with the grumpiness and snoozing.
That proposed holiday probably won’t happen – but these days you never know – Hallmark might see a new market…hmmm, if stuff doesn’t close or people don’t have to spend lots of money on gifts, it ain’t a real holiday?
If you add Sacagawea to Lewis and Clark for Expedition Day, it might make enough waves and Oks…
If it keep raining here, we’re gonna use this wild hogs as pontoon boats. They aren’t something you want to suddenly come up upon in the woods. Whew.

HA! they beat me to it…why Dec 20? Seems weird, but bound to be significance.
(Beyonce has a honorary day in the city as she was born and raised here – many of us remember her as a little kid on stage belting it out – and there was talk of renaming a street for her – but she’s still singing, so maybe a later date…)

It seems like every session they bring up the time change, and every Spring, I still spring forward. (Although, it’s not so much a spring and more a “why is the alarm making that sound in the middle of the night? Wait, why is it morning???) If Selena preferred CDT to CST, do you think they’d finally settle on one? (We can change the argument from Church/Cowboys or the actual physical toll including more heart attacks, and just run with this.) I’m not partial to either, but would just prefer only one.

That’s it! We’ve got to find where she made a statement of choice – and her faithful will make it happen!
It’s just time to let time flow as it will. It surely doesn’t appreciates a stop watch.
(If it ever stops raining here, there are things to do…the way things are going the wild hogs are going to be asked to help ferry people out of the mirk. Hope it’s bluebonnet, sunny, and smiling weather there. Thanks for traveling over here to chat)

You’ll need one of those State Fair worthy, multi-ton, prize-winning hogs from today’s post to get you all out of there. (How did he load that thing into his truck? Surely, there are about 10 of his closet friends behind that camera.)
Its been overcast here, and the temperature had the nerve to peak at 40 – soooo cold! The garage protected me from knowing the truth, but once I stepped out of the car many colorful words came out – each syllable punctuated by teeth chattering and brr noises. 🙂 Here’s to a warmer and sunnier weekend!!

I broke down and bought a dog raincoat…it was on sale!….and the washer and dryer seems to be running constantly. Webbed feet. We’re all going to have webbed feet…which is better than frost bitten ones (that may be Monday…great)

Molly looks absolutely adorable!!! She’ll be the bark of the park next time she’s out. This should hopefully stave off the webbed feet, or maybe it will bring out the sun (the same way washing your car ensures a storm). I do hope RC approves.

I must admit this gave me a good chuckle, arranging daylight saving to suit church and football; almost as bad as our banana benders ( that’s the people who live in Queensland) they don’t have DST, the extra hours daylight damages their curtains, would you believe, they honestly believe that there is one extra hour of daylight added to / slipped into the day, sort of 25 hour day if you get what I mean.
But a PH for a singer? That’s beyond the pale

Oh by the way on the subject of Queensland, there is a large cattle station up there named King Ranch after the one in TX? It was started back in the 1950’s by a Sir Rupert Clark Bt, one on the few Australian Baronets, a pig of a man which I wont go into,
He introduced the Santa Gertrudis cattle into Australia.
I think that his King Ranch legacy makes more money from their porcine products now

Time zones don’t bother me, probably because I’ve always lived pretty much in the middle of whichever one I’m in. But DST. Puh-leeze! Pick one or the other — I don’t care which — and stick with it. I hate adjusting to the time change twice a year.

Do people eat those boars or are they trophy animals? They’d scare me if I saw one in the den.

Those Russian boars are fine dining in Europe. They were imported to California and TX a while in an attempt to lure hunters to private game ranches…unfortunately, the boars walked off(fences do not stop them) and multiplied in the perfect environment for them. Now they roam wildly through the brush (no dens for them), tear up the ground, ruining pastures and vegetation, and are quite dangerous to run up. Here, a few years ago, the state had hired hunters who ran them down (in attempt to control their population) and the meat was carefully dressed out, and handed off to food banks. That program recently stopped for some reason. There are actual events with hunts and cooking contests. Cooking and handling of the meat must be done carefully as the boars/feral hogs carry diseases that can make you sick if not done right. AS subdivisions encroach on habitats, more people find out about the critters…and nothing is apparently more tastily or a better place to roam than a manicured lawn. Bet they never get recognized as trendy pets, though
