Good mess and bright

Elf couple sledding. 1890 (Christmas card, Laresen/NAt. Lib. of Norway (USPD. artist life, pub.date/Commons.wikimedia.org)

“Workshop closed. Let the holidays begin! Florida, here we come!”(1890 Christmas card, Norway /USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Survival predicted and accomplished!

After all the boxes are ripped wildly  opened, after all the eggnog is downed, after all the turkey or ham is gone, hope you’re as full of cheer as Santa’s elves once the sleigh leaves the barn.

Merry Merry Christmas from this mouse who is stirring

Phil, the Philosopher Mouse of the Hedge

Christmas card, 1950. Shamrock Hotel, Houston, TX, (USPD, artist life, pub.date/Commons.wikimedia.org)

1950’s Christmas card featuring the Shamrock Hotel, Houston, TX. This was THE place to stay and if you wanted to see movie stars, millionaires or rising star politicians, you’d hang out by the cabanas around the pool big enough to have motorboats pulling water skiers…and they did that. Sold, blown up, and now part of the medical center complex – but we’ll never forget those days of unmatched Hollywood glamour and wonder. (USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Three birds on vintage Christmas card. (USPD: artist life, pub.date/Commons.wikimedia.org)

We have pine trees locally. Molly collects the cones on her walk and adds them to a pile in the back yard of her souvenirs.Today will be right around over 70 F. On Christmas Day, 1983, it was 11 degrees F. Cold winters happen every few years even here (It’s a good plan to check the long term weather forecast before DIY tearing out the back wall of the house to install French doors all the way across the living room over Christmas holidays)(Vintage postcard /USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Christmas cat shopper pulling gifts on sled., 1914 postcard. NYPub.Lib (USPD. pub.date, artist life/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Good grief. Staff has no class and We, RC Cat of the Realm, are forced once again to step up and provide needed holiday elegance. The cat’s meow. Seriously. That cat model was yowling that her agent booked her in a role meant for a dog! But she did like the furry paw warmer and kept it as camouflage for her mousie stash. Only fair for the embarrassment. Jingle on.(1914 postcard/USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Oh, Lordy. I’d forgotten 1983. The bay froze, the pipes burst, and I ice skated for the last time in my life around the courtyard at Avalon Square. Somehow, the House of Pies on Kirby managed to stay open, and despite all the bad jokes focused on its name and reputation, everyone wanted to be there. Who doesn’t like pie and coffee — or a hot bowl of soup when nature’s gone berserk.

(And now, another one of great-aunt Rilla’s malapropisms has come back. She never said ‘berserk.’ It always was ‘bersmerk.’ My mother picked it up from her, and I hear it that way for years. I’ve been trying to remember them all, and now I can add another!)

’83. So happy for that hand-me-down snow suit for a little kid – I think she was the only warm one on the block…
House of Pies – now that’s vintage Houston! Everyone cool – or freezing that year- went there. Sigh.

Merry Christmas to RC and the gang (and the staff too)! Our day is mild-ish (in the 40s), no snow (no complaints here either), sun shining. All good. Sounds like you know the folks who ripped out that back wall! 🙂

I just love the vintage cards you somehow come up with. I used to have a muff like the cat’s only mine was black rabbit fur. Hoping your Christmas was cheery and bright as well as warm.

Mine was white with pink satin inside (that I worried constantly about getting dirty)
Thanks for adding a holiday note
Hope your furry elves are resting up to bark in a new year with gusto!
