Got your goat

Not all the old goats live in DC and linger in Congress long past their maturation date.

Many are quite productive. They have dreams. They have fantasies…

Goat in rainbow headdress (Blue Heron Farms, FB)

Let me guess. Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome? Bully, Billy. (Blue Heron Farms)

Goat in costume as Medusa. Medusa crowned goat. (Blue Heron Farms, TX. FB)

It’s no myth. Perfect for that college Greek party or Freeway Design Engineers’ Conference as well as Halloween.(Blue Heron Farms)

goat in lion costume (Blue Heron Farms, TX)

It might seem a bit cheesy, but there was a cattle call for a new production of the Lion King.(Blue Heron Farms)

Costumed goat with cute hat with braids. (Blue Heron Farms, TX. FB)

A new sheriff in town: Annie Oakley, Belle Starr, Calamity Jane or Dale Evans? (Blue Heron Farms)

Ah, the secret lives of goats.

I am rather fond of goats having had one as a co-worker during one summer as a camp counselor.

They kill snakes.

Ours was a reliable employee who worked diligently clearing a perimeter of brush and brambles around each of the platform tent before the campers arrived. Leaving just enough natural landscaping to allow privacy with the canvas tent flaps rolled up, but munch-mowed enough to discourage critters and Mr. No Shoulders from visiting.

No old goat drama, just did the job hired to do. And was happy with little compensation: a small spot on the foot of my camp bed at night. As good as a watch dog – no little campers were ever able to sneak up and prank our counselors’ tent. Loyal.

As far as butting heads? Well, the two of us always handled things head on. Could put his sharp little hoof down when angry, though. Snake in the grass’ worst nightmare.

So I was charmed when I ran across Blue Heron Farm not far from here.

A couple of city kids who were determined to live gently and in harmony with nature and Nubian goats (and a few other animals) on their 10+ acre sustainable farm. It’s cheesy – really – along with quarts of plain yogurt and cajeta (a Mexican goat milk caramel).  These new farmers of the old style can be found at two of the popular Farmers’ Markets and a couple of other places.

You can visit the farm and goats – and if you’re lucky, maybe you see the goats’ latest Halloween fashions. (They’ve also gone to the dogs with a pup rescue initiative, but that for another post to avoid cuteness overload.)

Halloween on the hoof. Only fair. We all have our dreams. And they kill snakes.

How could you have left this one out? Granted, it’s not exactly focused on the goat, but it’s still important to remember that “Goat ropers need love too!”

“If you’re short of trouble, take a goat.” That would explain why my dad took on goats exactly three days. They escaped to the neighbor’s and got on top of their car and put dents all over the topside.

Goats Have been used around here to kill kudzu. They are usually guarded by donkeys. That is the donkeys will attack coyotes trying to attack the goats. Personally, have been chased through a barn by a Billy goat.

Not too keen, but some of them are cute and have a certain charm.
My brother looked after one and it charged their patio doors……….. twice……. so was quite costly a favour.

They are adorable. My uncle had sheep. Also cute when young but when those horns grew (along with the sex drive) we kids weren’t allowed near Smoky without my uncle to manage him. I suggest goats all the time to my husband to mow the lawn!

This was fun! The goats are cute. I’ve often thought about getting a goat or two to help with all the mowing I have to do around here (to keep the snakes away from the house).

    Lovely!
When we were living in the Midlands there was an individual living high on a hill whose best friend was a goat. It was disconcerting to be stared disdainfully down at by a goat in the passenger seat of a Land Rover (no, at least he didn’t drive). Of course, we called the man The Lonely Goatherd. (True!)

The goat at the foot of your bed… now that’s a tale to be told, Phil, not to mention be photographed. The goat ‘hats’ are clever. I think my favorite is the lion. As for the lady, I am thinking Dale Evans, kind of a bad girl want-to-be, but not the real thing. –Curt

Goats are smart, learn quickly, cute – to disguise their bad habit of totally defoliating ground…and then moving on to stuff you don’t want them to eat. (No matter how cute, no, not in the house) Years later I did turn down the gift of a darling baby goat a friend (who drank too much) brought home from the Renaissance Festival…hmmm. Wonder if they went back and paid the farmer to take back the goat) Glad you got a grin – hope you and yours are doing well – headed that way shortly)

Goats are so cute. The younger, the cuter. Didn’t know they killed snakes. What a plus! (Intellectually, I know snakes have their place, but emotionally … nope.)

oh, so nice!!! Goats are super – love the pix. Didn’t know about the snkae killing thing. I used to know a guy who had pygmy goats as pets in the house. He and his wife would come to work with lots of goat stories. And: ::applause:: for those goat sayings. How have you been? battered by storms? sick of rain? ((((hugs))))

We’ve had a lot of rain, but the big flooding storms have been in central TX. The back yard is a mud hole. Molly look out and is so dejected over the drizzle – she’s tired of having to go out and get drenched. There are so many in so many places that have had to struggle with severe weather problems this year..
My dad had a friend who raised “nervous goats” – little goats that when scared would fall down and appear dead for a bit. Spooky – and made you want to be really really kind and careful around them.
Paw waves from the Realm. Have a safe and warm Holler-Ring! Thanks for ticking out a comment to leave.
