Arming up for Floodageddon

Even storms are getting elevated to full of self-esteem winnership.

Although humans have always called storms names since forever…most not previously uttered in polite company.

spotted, spiral sea shells (H.Zell/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Spotted and swirling. Are tropical storms Uber for Sea Shells? (H.Zell/Commons.wikimedia.org)

What’s with the weird naming of every little hurricane, rain storm, flood, cold front, and dust storm?

Natural stuff which probably already has a name, but like cats or non-English speaking arrivals, can’t or won’t blurt it out. (Do not underestimate the secret lives of nature.)

Seriously, these things don’t look insecure, powerless, or in need of positive reinforcements to form self-confident identities.

Human arrogance at its’ finest.

The 1900 Storm. Descriptive. Efficient. Future generations and media won’t have to waste time looking up when it happened.

Using the obvious is too simple.

Not exactly choosing a name for baby…

“Oh, stop. Rain’s a-comin’ and we’re moving in for the duration. Cheese? Oh, don’t mind if we do!”(USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

91L: tropical moisture gathering off the Yucatan – a vague. undecided entity – maybe one without any strong intention of circulation, but it could be exploring directional options on Travelocity, Expedia, and Price Line.

You know how it is…those from cold climates want to vacation in the warmth, opposite for those of hot tropical temps, those of the mountains want to visit the beaches, and, of course, those who yawn at seashells and surf, crave mountain tops.

(Fishing doesn’t seem to figure in those decisions. Humans seem good at finding that activity no matter the location.)

Looks like someone somewhere between the New Orleans area and Padre Island, TX will be getting rain from this tropical wave. Lots of rain. Probably on Father’s Day to Monday.

It’s the coastal plain. Flat is an understatement. If it rains long enough in one place …

Gators are grumbling as this is their nesting season and their little ones tend to want to play in the water even when told to stay safe at home.

There were multiple feathered moms in the back yard yesterday holding flight schools. Chirping like drill sergeants to their new winged pilots they’d better get up to speed quickly.

Maybe they know something.

Sea shells from common purple sea snail. (H.Zell/Commons.wikimedia.org)

True art. Not signed. Some sea anonymity once the web surfing and wave of collected data is washed away. Common (but so elegant) purple sea snail. (H.Zell/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Anyway, while keeping an eye on the radar, (Where is that annual darn Saharan dust cloud when you need it? Usually those fine particles deter tropical development which is super fine with me) I’m casually gathering and arranging.

Expecting a long period of rain. Hoping for no power loss. (Yesterday saw first 100F temps about an hour from here. AC is not a luxury this time of year.)

Supplies collected yesterday (Do you have any idea how much you crave chips and Oreo cookies during tropical storms….Oh, OK lots of seasonal fruit, too.) We normally keep 5-6 flats of water stacked during the summer so we don’t have to fight crowds during “The storm is coming” hysteria. Non perishable foods gradually accumulated for that reason, too.

RC Cat has been shooed away from surveying the pantry – counting cans ( “Only 30? how about a couple more? No, those do not count. We turned up Our nose at those expensive recommended cans once and We shall into perpetuity.. “)

Molly Malamute Is waiting for Chewy’s delivery. She is smug knowing there’s a new Huddlehound on the shelf waiting for just the perfect moment of boredom. (Hurricanes and Tropical Storms are like Christmas to dogs: their people stay home. It’s snuggle, play, toys, eat..oh, yeah that mysterious shove outside periodically – but lots of towels and drying afterwards…people have such odd amusements.)

Serious rain probably over the weekend, so scheduling laundry. Nothing worse than pile of dirty/wet clothes and towels with no power. Good to limit the pile preemptively.

So that’s the excuse de jour for a rushed, boring post.

It’s not a dream, It’s cool and for real and offers real solutions for victims of natural disaster, poverty (Nonprofit New Story sees hope), even for colonizing other planets. (NASA should know! They ain’t gonna be hauling bricks and lumber out there…) ICON may be machining the future.

A 3-D printed house. Wonder if it’s like one of the houses the 3 little pigs lived in…(not the brick one)

Concrete mixture oozes like toothpaste! That machine is amazing. What I really like about these tiny houses is that by using concrete, even after a flooding, you can hose down the interior and clean it so no worry about mold or having to cutting out sheet rock/remover insulation – making it faster and easier to get back into the house. (My neighbor’s aunts house in Puerto Rico that’s made from concrete blocks: wash, rinse, and return)
That one does have a little porch “hat” that reminds me of the 3 pigs’ house. Thanks for building that reference n your comment

Eeeeeeeeeek!!!! Habit made me “like” this. I don’t like that big bad storm at all. ((((((((hugs)))))))) Chewy! Chewy’s wonderful! They brought food & litter here when I couldn’t walk around stores to shop. Super prices & customer service, too. Always good to do laundry before possible power troubles. Comfort foods: yes! Charging everything ahead of time, check. Flashlights. “Secure” candles. Picking up in the house (if needed) so there are fewer trippables around, for walking in the dark. I keep those snappable “light sticks” in stock, too, esp for kitteez. Some areas of the house get no light at all without nightlights, and even feline eyes need SOME light. The light sticks bring plenty, esp when hung in front of mirrors. Wow- I wish you less rain than predicted, gentle winds, and uninterrupted power! (This post, by the way, is genius- 👏👏👏)

(quickly before running vacuum- to make sure that’s not a wild animal/neighbor’s cat hiding in the pet hair tumbleweeds…). Yep, you’ve got the preliminary plans down. Those light sticks are a whole lot cooler than candles in front of mirrors!
Yesterday multiple bird mothers were conducting flight schools for their newly feathered pilot children. Good plan. The bluejay twins were dozing in the neighbor’s fig tree this morning – so far so good.
The tv stations are gearing up for super hype, so it probably won’t happen. We noticed they seemed to have sent their prime time weather stars home to rest up (and get their sleeping bags?) and are using the weekenders right now.
RC just says “yawn” like it’s not going to affect her world…as long as the AC and ceiling fan stays on.
Thanks for swooping by to chat (more later)

::runs back:: Did you read Mad Magazine” when you were a kid? One of my fav things ever was in “Mad:” a satire of “Madison Avenue” that included an ad for packets of instant water. Much giggling. But it’d be VERY useful to have these days.

I LOVED Mad Magazine!!! Talk about clever – and needing wit to understand it all. It was one of the few non-library things were were allowed to read…comics were scorned by mom. Instant water! (although that would be useful for wildfires…some kid’s probably working on that right now…)
Paw waves…oH, let me get that mud off of you. Overly enthusiastic pup….

You’ve unintentionally got the song “They Call the Wind Mariah” (or Maria? but it sounds like Mariah) – from Paint Your Wagon stuck in my head.

The 3D house is COOOOL!!! What an awesome idea! I just love it!!!

Stay dry this weekend no matter what you call those rains!

That’s a perfect background music song for the post!
That house and machine are in Austin somewhere…need to track them down…big machines designs and operations are so intriguing. They make something out of nothing! It looks like toothpaste!
Most of the area can use the rain -drought and wild fire season already. A bit of rain a couple of days would be fine…deluge, maybe not so…far too many chips and cookies available for eating.

A solid truth! I’ve always thought 3-D printers were machines searching for a mission. Building fast, low cost, sturdy houses is just perfect. That kid with the vision can change the world and beyond. Thanks for nailing down a comment to leave.

We’re in a weak El niño influence year, so it ought to be interesting. Hopefully some of the rain will scoot north and west to help with the wildfires – or at least soak the parched ground to prevent more.
(Ran by your place quickly this morning, will make be making a longer trip down that beach. Good to see you back and rested up!)

Storms are one thing, but when the electricity goes down they become a whole different thing. Glad you’re prepared. We’re having August-like humidity already here, but no huge storms like you do. Whatever happened to the idyllic days of summer?

Yeah, the storms come and go, but the ones you remember are the ones without power…for days…It’s a weird little system coming across – we can use a bit of rain…but only a bit, please. (And what has happened to June? It’s just like August: glaring and oppressively hot. The dog is not pleased…)

In this area, it’s all about commonsense and preparation. Chances are, it’ll be a few rainy days. Staying home with excuses for not doing anything is not always a bad thing, right? Hope your summer is entertaining and not slipping by too fast

Honest to Pete, I’m already sick of the hype. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it doesn’t. This time, we need it, and I’ll be glad for what comes, especially since the latest has the chance of development into something windy minimal. I just got back from the hill country, and people there are praying that some of it heads their way — it’s flat-out drought up there.

Of course Harvey was awful, and of course there are people still trying to dig out from that one. But when some of the professional mets I know continue addressing people as though they’re just too fragile to cope with a few days of rain — especially when the range is generally agreed to be 2″-6″ — well, it’s getting to me. Maybe I’m the one who’s not sensitive enough. I suppose that could be. But you can put me in the “Bring it on!” camp!

In other news: I’m home, and the house guest has flown back to her home. Routine is good!

We’ve been laughing about it. Looks like TV stations sent the heavy duty weather people home today to rest up …and to get their sleeping bags HAHA.
It’s early, but the annual supply collection was already in progress (time to redeem the grocery coupons) last week just to get it out of the way before anything got into the Gulf – then, there it was. Right now it looks like Mexico’s getting the watering…unless the storm makes a little right turn…
We are in drought with burn bans already – yep, let it rain. We’ll be glad to sit around and hope for showers. (Was wondering if your visitor was going to have flight issues with weather on the way. Double whew! Now you can really relax.)
Some homeowners are building levees around their houses: https://www.click2houston.com/news/hoa-shuts-down-familys-attempt-to-protect-home-from-flooding (back off HOA. He did the paperwork…)
and in Richmond, https://www.click2houston.com/news/richmond-man-builds-levee-around-home-to-prevent-future-flooding (Will look lovely landscaped!)
Meanwhile we wait – happily. Thanks for snugging up a comment to this dock

I just heard about that levee builder today. With enough land to do it, it’s not a bad idea, especially with a little landscaping to blend it in.

The good news is that my guest hooked up easily the whole way through. Her son works for American, so she was flying non-revenue, dependent only on their being a seat. No problem at Hobby, and only a one-flight wait in Dallas. For a ticket price of $31, I could wait.

There’s something to be said about “good enough and works fine” rather than “Oh, new and improved? must have.” These tiny houses do hold real promise for those recovering from natural disasters – no hotel room, few travel trailers can ever feel like a real home. We’ve had a couple of downpours today but it looks like the darn big rain clump will arrive late Sunday/Monday/and into Tuesday. Or maybe not at all. In any case, we got chips and beer. (and Molly a new toy…she does tend to get bored and tries to get the cat to play…not successfully.

Oh, we get spring/summer and fall big rains – bigger during a El Niño weather pattern which we have again this year. UGH. Often the Spring/early summer tropical waves can become big rain events, but we worry about big hurricanes during late Aug/ early Sept (after the gulf waters spend all summer warming up). Seems early this year. Where is that giant Saharan Dust cloud when you need it – late this year? Those dust particles tend to slow/prevent tropical storm/hurricane development.
This area has been in drought, so the water retention ponds/lakes are empty and the have started lowering the level of water of one big lake north of us to allow more holding room if necessary.
Now just waiting. IF things go as usual, the tropical wave will turn and go inland somewhere else. Maybe just a practice run. Works for me. Paw waves! And thanks for stocking the comment shelf
