Good to listen to Moms…most of the time…but maybe not Clara Harris
Who has just been released from jail – all reformed and demure now – just in time to see her teenage twin sons on Mother’s Day. She taught Bible classes during her time in prison. One of their neighbors paused when asked about her getting out and said the standard, “Well, I don’t know., She’s served her time, I guess she’s learned what she did was wrong…”
And watching I thought, “Dude, were you even living in this town when it all happened? Do you even know what she did?”
Me, I pass that place all the time. The hotel parking lot where she ran over her cheating husband 3 times – with her step daughter – his child – sitting in the passenger seat: zoom, zoom, thud, bump. Zoom, zoom, thud, bump. Zoom, zoom, thud, bump. All on security video – and forever in that child’s head.
It wasn’t a sudden “crime of passion.” A volatile relationship – with blame on both sides. Her private detective. Her actually going to the room where he frequently met his mistress days before “just to look at the room.” Her sitting in the parking lot waiting for him to come out as usual on schedule. Premeditated. A hit. Murder.
So, she’s learned the lesson that killing – murder – is morally wrong as well as being against the law? Really? she wasn’t aware of that before? By mental defect, defiance, or negligent parents?
Dead is dead. That stepdaughter will never be the same. (She probably didn’t send Clara a Mother’s Day card.)
And society must be nice: adjust and understand.
People now make such an effort to be kind – so accepting – even when they suspect it’s stupid and the wrong thing to do.
Focus, people. It may be a car, a knife, a gun, a high heel, a rock.
All the laws in the world won’t make a difference if all individuals in society don’t live, breathe, and dedicatedly teach “Don’t kill. It’s wrong”
Something Clara and others seem to have ignored – or never thought important enough to follow.
Oddly feeling like a sitting duck, Mom.

We have a small pond down at the end of property. It’s surrounded by mature evergreens, and invisible to us from the house. However, when the frogs mature, their cacophony of croaks is unbelievable.
Much more pleasant are the quacks of the ducks that occasionally visit. Even if we don’t see them, it’s delightful to know they’re enjoying a safe rest there so near us.

We enjoyed seeing the tiny ducklings and cygnets on the marina, but were greatly saddened at the high mortality rate due to predators therein.
Now, we are enjoying watching the goslings and ducklings on the lake in the park just up the road. They are so cute, and I’ve posted some gosling photos today.

I loved your little pictures!
The ducklings playing with the gosling tucked under their mom before I could get a picture of them all…possibly sensing Molly watching out the car window sent them scurrying for safety – but Molly Malamute loves to watch all the little fuzzy ones without charging or barking.
It’s so tough to be a duck or goose mom – danger everywhere.

I can see why Walden Pond held so much attraction and inspiration. There’s something wonderful about the little fuzzy ones each spring. (and here we can walk away from the frogs chorus!) Thanks for paddling by with a comment

I wonder how long it will take for us to evolve backwards. We sure could take a lesson from animal moms who would defend their young, not murder from jealousy.
Great points, it’s the personal responsibility thing, and we used to legislate that. I wonder if she gets her driver’s license again?

A little worrisome at the loss of respect for life and laws. (Well, she can’t go back to being a dentist…wonder if the twins have the Mercedes…Actually as a killer, she should should permanently lose the right to vote and should have to put that she served time for murder on job applications. Not harsh at all for a murderer who is now walking free…)
Thanks for mulling along

I often wonder why people don’t take the simpler route. Like divorce. Much less messy than killing your spouse.

And the hotel would be so much happier, too. People still drive by and point…or wince.
Thanks for pointing out the better route

I take it Clara was unfamiliar with the concept of divorce? Sue him for all he’s got? Make him regret his decision to cheat on her? That’d be easier… in the long run.

And that way, only SHE would have been “hurt” – and all the kids would be as OK as possible.

I remember this story. Boggles the mind to think she could do that, especially with a child in the car. As Ally Bean said, divorce would be a lot easier and saner.

Walk away. Just walk away. Of course that’s what’s acceptable. Maybe they didn’t go over that in dental school or in prenuptial counseling with Clara?
(What she did to that girl amounts to planned emotional torture and torment. Innocent kid “sentenced” to cruel and unreasonable punishment for life. Boggles that Clara is back on the streets…)

Yes, that seems like a very short sentence for what she did.

I just made the mistake that I know better than to make — I read some of the comments attached to news articles about Harris’s release. Suffice it to say Clara’s not the only loon out there — although that’s an insult to our feathered loon friends.

Boy, isn’t that the truth?!! Many too many people seem to think that if you’re online you can say whatever stupid/malicious/downright evil things about all and sundry.. I’ve given up reading them, even in seemingly balanced or innocuous articles. Sad commentary on society.

A long time ago when I’d complain about some bully’s slam or lunchroom gossip, Mom would calmly say “Consider the source.” (meaning “is that person really worth the bother of listening to?”) Online comments on news stories/responses to media are pretty much like that…not worth reading…besides what kind of people has time to sit down and be as ugly/stupid/malicious/evil…no one that matters …and possibly one who isn’t able to manage their own life, so he/she feels like telling others how to run theirs.
The old phrase of “get a life” was never needed more than now.

Ditto on the no reading of news article comments. (Started to post this for the weekend, but thought it might be a little harsh for some. So she, like so many others found God in jail…maybe she should stay in there with him….God’s probably yelling “Stop. Close the door. I’ve got them on the right track as long as they stay in here!”)
Talk about looney tunes..,.did you see the huge flock of seagulls flying south across the lake towards Galveston yesterday? Wonder if they had been to Sunday shrimp brunch and were headed back home. We are used to seeing a few here and there – but what a crowd. Feathers were flying for sure.

I agree with all you said about Clara’s case. What struck me was your comment that people would say, “And society must be nice: adjust and understand.” They would be referring to murder! Contrast that to tons of people who go off the wall if you voice a political view different from theirs. Where is understanding there???

Backwards world, indeed. Murderers get “understanding” and multiple do-overs. Soft terms instead of what they are: “killers” and not following the rules of society like everyone else has to…And we’re supposed to play nice with them? Seems pretty basic – don’t kill or else: rejected by and from society…but apparently not the PC/socially correct thinking. Odd and destructive to human civilization. But then again, that’s just me….

I assume Clara was not black/coloured, for surely she would have been given a needle of no return had she have been.
What a callous cold blooded murderess, she should never have been released and left to rot in jail. better still serve out her sentence in a mens prison, wouldn’t that be justice?

Wait – wait – you forgot: I’m in an area that is Minority Majority – widely diverse and multilingual forever. Common misconception. (And mainly voting Independent or Democratic. and Our last mayor, a lesbian was pretty good and held office during repeated elections until term limits had her bow out) So, no. Clara is a minority and a not recent immigrant and a rather well off professional like her dead husband.
In any case women are rarely given the death penalty here…although in this case many feel it was warranted as it wasn’t just killing a person, but also inflicting vicious permanent damage and harm on a child. But even if she has been sent to Death row, it takes so 25-30 years to carry out the sentence to allow for all appeals, all legal maneuvering, for new evidence to surface, or for technology advances offer more proof or exoneration (which happens a lot more than you probably think.) In any case the individual on death row lives much longer than the victims got to. (And please, people, stop showing up at the governor’s office demanding he stop any execution – in this state he does not have that authority. The State Parole Board makes that call after reviewing evidence/case and tells the governor what to do…short injunctions can be called, but the Governor cannot stop anything himself.)
Clara was callous. It doesn’t seem right that she should ever be out. (or allowed to vote or get a driver’s license – obviously she has bad judgement or control a car)
Thanks for ducking in with a solid comment – no fluff there!

Thanks for setting me straight there Phil, I’ve definitely been under thee impression that it was just gungho shove a needle into them in Texas, that’s the media for you, that is how Twxaz is portrayed here by our so called press, must admit the news that gets served up on the internet follows a similar pattern.
Glad to hear that you live in a very civilized part of the country. ‘d have no problems voting for a Lesbian or homosexual man if they are the best person in my opinion for the job. Their sexual orientation is nobody’s business but their own. IMNSHO

Sociologist say TX is what the rest of the USA will shortly look like as far as population and diversity.
Maybe it’s the way TX was settled by so many different people that makes it/multilingualism all seem normal. How weird it must be to be in an area where everyone looks alike and sounds alike, and has like background/heritage. As my daughter and her friends say, “We’re all mutts here.”
Not that everything always run smoothly and perfectly (well, even the USA founders said building a “more perfect” union – it’s a work in progress – towards perfect), most in the state manage to live and let live and mind their own business. Mutts may sniff around, snarl, and jostle, but when it comes down to it, we’re pack…just like when hurricanes hit. We sometimes think of closing the border – the northern one – or at least putting up signs that say “Please don’t tell us ‘This is the way we do it back home’…We don’t care how they did/do it there. Get all in , get up to speed here, or go home…now.” HAHA
Texas is a whole different place…people are always expecting the Hollywood TX – and usually quite pleasantly surprised at what is reality. (Houston’s current mayor kinda looks like the movie Blazing Saddles’ new sheriff in town…he’s a real bicycle enthusiast and sometimes rides his bike to work…when it’s not blazing hot like today…)
Thanks for riding in to chat! Always glad to see you.

I some times watch a show on TV from Waco Fixer Upper, which I must admit I enjoy, the folks are certainly different from what Hollywood dishes out, they all seem honest nice every day sort of people that I’d like to know. They’re definitely different from Americans that I see on other programs. Ofter when watching I think I’d like Waco if I ever get there.

Have family out there! That is the real Waco. A university town which has really grown in the past few years. A bit old fashioned in style – but that’s one of the things that makes it pleasant. You would feel right at home there…(you’re already used to snakes – rattlers wouldn’t be a surprise 🙂 )

Theres been a bit of trouble with the football team at Baylor University I read a while ago. some players treating women very badly. Then it seemed to get hushed up and disappeared, I suppose someone got paid off.
As for snakes I had a very bad experience once and now my granddaughters have been taken to live where the Eastern Brown Snake (the 2nd most deadly snake on earth) thrives so more to worry about.

HAHA. A bit? You have to understand how embarrassing that all was to the school which for a long time was a strict conservative Baptist institution. You couldn’t buy alcohol of any kind in the town. In early years, yes, there was no dancing. Curfews on dorms. As Waco is so far from major cities (and what we called civilization at the time) that parents would send their out of control daughters out there in the hopes they would complete their education before having to get married. The scandal “disappeared” because more just like it broke elsewhere. But the university did take steps (like the PR people from each university caught says they do…football culture? More likely what is allowed/overlooked by adults in charge?)
When you said they were moving, the first thing I thought was snakes. Mom used to say when kids visited our farm that the city kids alway were the ones getting hurt – like farm kids had some invisible instinct. Little kids learn fast and have good eyes. They’ll be careful in their new home (their mum may be a nervous wreck though…)

The geese and ducks swim side by side in our neck of the woods. I think they feel a certain kinship versus the dogs that are commonly walked by them. The dogs have pretty much gotten use to them, but they didn’t get a formal memo or anything…so safety in (like) numbers. As for the dog-walking, we continue to see the occasional dog fool its walker by chasing after squirrels. Apparently, they don’t get used to them…it may also have to do with the squirrels panicking so badly they run at the dogs instead of away from them. All that being said, no animal murders to report. As for human murders, we continue to have those…but none so classy as using a person as a speedbump with their child in the car. Ugh.

Maybe it’s a mutual defense league agreement with ducks and geese.
The only time Molly was involved with a squirrel demise is when a young one saw her and as you said run right towards her in the backyard and Molly interpreted that as a squirrel version of puppy bow play invitation and happily bounded into the bush, too …and around and around as we tried to help…and almost had the squirrel run up a leg…until we bribed Molly with a treat inside. I think the poor squirrel actually had a hear attack – there was no wound or blood and Molly never touched it.
Luckily snakes are smart enough to flee away in the opposite direction…
Always enjoy having you drop by. Hope things are going well…well, we won’t talk about the NBA playoffs in this city right now HAHA
