What’s the big deal? For years dogs have had to accept it.
Sight is way over rated. Maybe if people sharpened their senses of smell and taste, things would go down better.
A return to believing food is fuel, not a hobby or entertainment, might actually have benefits and we dog would actually have running partners more worthy and we wouldn’t be forced to dawdle along out of species consideration.
It’s baffling to dogs why people are wary of blobby food created by 3D Printers.
It’s a time saver. Fancy recipes recreated at home by software.
Ingredients can be added to personal health and fitness needs.
And it looks an awful lot like what pet owners have been dumping in dog bowls day after day while encouragingly chirping, “It’s specially formatted! All you need. Expensive. You’ll love it. Until we buy a huge case of it, then you decide you hate it and will happily starve before eating it.“
The researchers at Columbia University say at first they underestimated that people like their food to look like, well, food. But they are making a good deal of progress on food presentation.
In any case, astronauts have had to get past that visual stimulation of food for their meals, so in time….
Besides they’ve created a very attractive counter 3D printer appliance.
Shortly to de rigueur for trendy kitchens and stores like William and Sonoma.

Dogs are heeling this development closely.
The whole idea of food looking less like cans and more like leg of mutton, beef tenders, or deer hind quarters brings out the wolf in all of them.

Sometimes I am glad I am getting old. While I can see the nutritional applications being valuable, digestion begins with eyes, nose and anticipation… and anyway, I enjoy cooking.

No species enjoys food as much as a dog. Sure wish my cats weren’t so persnickety! Hope you are feeling better. I also got the flu shot. Fingers crossed!

Cats may appear to snub food in public, but set out a small dish of vanilla ice cream and RC Cat just chortles with glee.
This darn flu thing! Now they say those that come down with the flu have an increased chance of heart attack shortly after recovering. If it’s not one thing, it’s another….Hope you got over it too – still avoiding large crowds…of course with the dreary wet weather that’s fairly easy as nobody wants to get out! (But I couldn’t stand it and rescued some beat up pansies from the garden center and planted them in a moveable pot – they were just 50 cents! Who could leave them behind?…so a huge freeze is probably on the way…Thanks for wandering by – trying to catch up with comments and reading now

And she was quite firm about “Don’t try to bring in any of that special production Blue Bell Mardi Gras ice cream!” It’s a limited production that’s in high demand but not available everywhere or even in Houston – but we are in the Galveston Mardi Gras circle….she does like the purple beads though. What cat wouldn’t love a little royal bling?> HAHA

It would help if we could have a sunny dry day for a change. I think my body decided to shut down forcing hibernation during a very wet and dreary winter so far. Almost normal today, thanks for the encouragement and for adding a merry holiday comment

Keep warm inside and out, and get well! When you get back to the realm of the healthy, I’d love to know if the speaker in that last caption is the dog or the woman. I automatically assumed it was the dog, but then I’m not necessarily representative of normality…

I’m not sure how cooking could be done easier with those printers – just looks like more gadgets to find a place to store in cabinets and on the counters… not to mention the specialized cartridges. I’ll have it though, if it makes cooking easier and more simplistic.
I hope you are on the mend and feeling better soon. Forrest and I have some kind of respiratory crud that’s going around. I hear the strain of flu is a nasty one and has really hit the Midwest hard.

I can see another popular gadget on the horizon. Might be a life saver for the working mom whose kid pops up at the last minute and says, “Mom I told them you’d bake the cookies for the party today.”
Trying to avoid this stuff from getting respiratory which always takes a long time for me to get over. Slowly getting some energy back and feeling more normal. One of the doc’s nurses got sick and tested positive for 2 of the flue strains the vaccine is supposed to protect against….beginning to suspect the yearly shot is a money maker mostly. Looking stormy – got to run Molly while I can. You guys take care and have a merry and warm Christmas!

What do they put into the printers to make it spit out food? Plastic? I hope not the same cr*p that goes into commercial dog food. That’s why I feed raw.

Watch the longer video and they talk about breaking down real food components into small much/units that the printer can manage. May be an alternative to storing bulky healthy foods or for people where healthy veggies not just down the street.
People like all animals do better with unprocessed food ( an old old idea being rediscovered …again…sigh. People just keep reinventing the wheel…)
There is potential – we’ll see where it goes next.

Uh — no. Just no. No food from a printer. No. And no “beef” from a laboratory, and no milk from a test tube. Of course, I’m still using a flip phone, so it makes sense that I’d not be an early adopter of yet another money-making scheme from the technocrats. This reminds me of the vast campaigns by companies like Nestle, who convinced third world women that their formula would be better than breast-feeding. In a world when bottles can be sterilized, and where women have the money to feed full-strength formula, maybe. In countries where there’s no way to properly clean a bottle, and where women thin formula up to 80% with water to make it go farther — the results are diarrhea, malnutrition, and death.
So — maybe. But I’m betting this will be no more than an amusement for the financially well off, rather than a boon to the poor or disadvantaged.
Gee — and I intended to just wish you good health, a Merry Christmas, and a lot of good cookies — however they’re decorated!

Another gimmick appliance.
The university is mulling over what direction to take their inventions. The team seems pretty set on taking this in a positive direction for society. Found the principal researcher interesting…the cylinders hold real food (not laboratory created food substitute) broken into mush the 3D printer can handle. Maybe if the space program really does restart and goes where no one has gone before?
The whole thing just reminded me of canned food we daily tell pets is just what they want and need. HAHA
We’ll see.
Feeling almost human now. Cookies baked today…too many eaten, no doubt. Nutcracker tomorrow. (fortunately horrid cough better, but loading up on cough drops for the occasion)

I think I will continue to prepare my food the old fashioned way! Although having a way to make backpacking food look better would be a benefit. Not so much carrying the printer on my back. –Curt

Muy favorite thing about hiking was always that cell coverage was so bad nobody from work could reach me. Technology may have made some of life easier, but gads, the office feels it can intrude anytime, anywhere…so I was happy to take clients/territories the back 40.
Get ready for the Jetsons’ kitchen? Have you ever tried any of the ice cream the astronauts eat? That should pack well..I’d feel guilty foraging in the woods and stealing stuff out of the animals’ only grocery source HAHA

That ice-cream is really good. Not quite as good as the real stuff, but when you are 50 miles away from the nearest store… 🙂 Backpacking food today, is much better than it was in the beginning! And escaping from technology has always been an added benefit. –Curt

I think many Christmas stockings held that space ice cream when it first became available. We were all space mad here.
Seems like any food around a campfire at the end of a long day of hiking is the best ever – but the “new” generation of portable food is a huge improvement (and less squishable/drippy)

Well my Coco gets fresh skinless chicken breasts cooked by his own personal chef; me.
He also enjoys certified Angus beef, and the occasional egg, preferably raw but also poached, fried or boiled.
He’s easy to please not like the War office aka the wife!
And tomorrow he comes home, but I have a feeling that his Doctor is going to give me a special diet for him. He has developed a heart problem, probably caused by my giving him *** Michelin treatment 😦
