Hit and runs

In this whiplash world, there’s rode rage (surfacing way too often on multiple subjects) leaving a few hits and misses along the trail, Mr.

Some head spinning buzz just for you. (It’s busy here, so this is as good as the blog gets right now.)

  • “Not a shot! Anti-vax movement prompts Brooklynites to withhold inoculations FROM THEIR PETS It’s autism. They worry their pet might become autistic. My question is “How would you know?” Most dogs are already pretty ADHD. And cats? They all stare into corners and focus on the tiniest bit of dust no one can see. Neither species seem overly interesting in responding to requests by owners. Seriously.

  • Enough Bills already. Hard to focus, but try.

Amid all the foolishness for photo ops and political coin, serious legislation slips by undercover. Currently (hmmm, that’s an appropriate word choice) TX HB199 was introduced during the Special Session of the Texas House. So?

Looks like big business public utility monopolies companies are protecting themselves the little people. We all know how benevolent those giant companies are. Really concerned about income equality and social justice.

Basically this bill means if you have solar panels or wind turbines, the electric company can charge you a fee for simply having and using them. After all, the alternative energy owner produces much of their own electricity using less of theirs, and, therefore, will not be paying their fair share of maintenance of power company equipment/infrastructure/new generating plants. A monthly surcharge fee ($20-$40 a month) or charging solar contractors a fee when they install equipment quickly erases any benefit of buying or using solar/wind systems.

Been done in other states. Where does yours stand?

“Following customer backlash, Wyoming Utility withdraws proposed solar surcharge

Kansas utility pursues surcharge on solar customers” It was called “punitive” by solar advocates.

“Arizona OKs rate hike, new fees for solar customers.

Anti-Net Metering campaign by Utah Solar Energy Association (facts), Utah Clean Energy: Analysis of net metering proposal “Rocky Mountain Power proposed new netmetering fees and bill increases specifically for solar customers. Collectively, RMP’s proposal threatens to stall further rooftop solar development in Utah.”

Public Service Co. of New Mexico proposed solar fees ranging from about $20 to $35 a month, and Wisconsin utility We Energies had similar fees approved.

“Eversource rate case poses woes for solar projects” Massachusetts. (July 19, 2017)

“Utilities wage campaign against rooftop solar.”  (Washington Post, March 7, 2017)

“Nevada Energy CEO: Solar has gotten a Free Ride on the Grid” He asks, How fair is it that non-solar customers, mostly the poor who cannot afford solar panels, pay for most of the infrastructure everyone uses? (Similar argument of electric/hybrid car owners who use little or no gasoline so they don’t pay gas taxes which are used for road construction and maintenance.)

“Nevada solar industry collapses after state lets power company raise fees.” Read to understand potential. Recent adoption by Utah’s legislature of Solar Bill of Rights (2017) is now reversing the punishment of solar panel owners.

“Rooftop solar dims under pressure from Utilities Lobbyists.” (Times, July 8, 2017)

“Why is the Electric Utility Industry fighting solar customers?” (July 21, 2017)

Yep, in public and in front of cameras, benevolent electric companies urge customers to “Go, go green and save the environment! Even if rates are more expensive!”  But in private they are doing their darndest to squash individuals attempting to install solar panels or wind turbines. Could put the brakes on alternative energy progress.

Gosh darn. Let’s dance square to the hysteria about bathrooms.

  • Now if that don’t give you a headache, the darn LED lights we are being pushed to use will. (As I said, too many bills missing with us)

Hitting you with all of this is pretty hard, so before I run, I’ll leave a little energetic fun.

So what next? Electric companies charging fees to the Amish? Or perhaps to those who dare use natural gas for heating and hot water? Grrrr.

YA don’t want to purchase our product in expected amounts? Well, you’ll pay for not using it. So weird.
I do have to wonder here in this state (where the giant west TX wind farms managed to lobby and get others to pay for the massive lines that carry their electricity long distances to the grid and big city users) do power companies charge the wind farms a fee per wind turbine since they only produce and owners do not purchase any electricity? Are the wind farms paying their fair share of upkeep for infrastructure and line maintenance? Hmmmm…Interesting to note that profits from the west TX wind farms aren’t what was expected by original investors as the wind daily blows at night when electric demand is down and the power companies pay less for any electricity a producer puts on the lines at night….
Becoming more and more obvious Big Electric is not your friend…

What ever happened to selling the excess energy back to the company? Oh dear, they might have to pay for electricity like the rest of us? I’m sure they don’t MAKE it for free…

Ireland is seeing a boom in alternative energy, and our nonsense is to pay those people rolling it out excessive amounts of money to do so. This won’t end well, either.

Individuals can and do sell surplus to put on the grid – I think that makes the power companies even angrier. With good weather, solar/wind owners may only need/purchase commercial electricity at night when demand is lower anyway
Many people bought solar panels after doing the numbers and figuring how long /years it would be before their investment paid off – the monthly fee scrap that.
People need to wake up that Big Electric is not anyone’s friend – worse than Big Oil maybe.
It may not end well. Tired of the big players doing all the lobbying to get taxpayers to pay for their whims. The giant wind farms blighting West Texas mesas and plains managed to force the public to pay for stringing all the transmission lines/infrastructure needed for them to get their wind generated power to the major population areas, power generating plants/the grid ( And it’s a loooooong way) so the investors can make money. Some original investors/owners have already bailed because they found income wasn’t what was expected…wind there blows at night most of the time – when demand is down and power companies pay less.
We need to develop alternative energy sources, but tossing it all to Big Electric is foolish…not always clean, not always in best interest of the consumer. We do need some big break through – wonder how long and what those will be.
Thanks for powering up a commnent

I’m still pondering the autistic dog idea. These people have too much money, too few worries, no idea of reality and no brains.

Seems refresher course about faulty logic are needed..that and authoritative sources of information. (Oh, but who has time for that stuff – social media is so much quicker)
With the rabid squirrel problems they’ve had recently in the parks near there, you’d think people would be a little more concerned. Wild life is not just in the night clubs…

What is it? Land of the free but you need to be brave to live there?
being a paid up card carrying member of the ALP I’m a great believer in socialism. I believe that it’s a governments duty to be responsible for the health, education and welfare of the people, and to be responsible for the supply of light and power, completely necessary at reasonable cost to all. Not for money hungry private companies to screw every last cent out of those least able to fend for themselves to fill the pockets of their shareholders and directors.

    Here endeth the lesson for today ( which is pretty good seeing how I’m an atheist to boot:) }

It used to be the Land of “Live and Let Live”, “Your rights end at the end of my nose”, “Agree to disagree and still be friends”, “Don’t throw stones at your neighbor’s house if your own is made of glass” and stuff like the Ant and the Grasshopper fable. “For want of a shoe, the horse was loss” work ethic and be responsible for yourself, your family, and those who are vulnerable and weak as if they were your own. Know consequences of your actions and be prepared to accept them. “You have no one to blame, but yourself”
Odd that’s all changed. It all seemed sensible and worked for decades…
With an educated, like minded, congenial, self-motivated population socialism might have a chance. The problem seems to be greedy and power hungry people.
Keeping up with socialist Venezuela? Having done business there and having friends, the situation sounds more than dire. Great place with so much free free free- homes built and given away – “enough for all and here have some” – Then the oil market crashed and there economy did with it. The average citizen has lost 25 pounds, medicines have run out, the borders are closed, international airlines will not fly there, blackmarket grabs humanitarian supplies being sent in….the government during the Brazilian Olympics were telling people to start gardens and grow their own food – farmers at the time were told by the gov. what to plant and where but the only problem was that the farmers had no money to purchase seed/fertilizer and even if they did they couldn’t get it across the borders. It is a crisis. Socialism seems to have been grabbed by the rich and powerful (who are living quite well) and the government is headed to dictatorship. A month ago before the election the President there said “If we can’t win by votes, we will win. by guns.” So that really encouraged people to go out and vote…oh, all the government employees were threaten they would lose their jobs if they didn’t turn out and vote properly. Greed and hunger for power derails even the best of ideas.
What’s going to happen there is anyone’s guess. I worry about those there. – but countries should settle things among themselves. No interference from others who think their form of government should be what everyone has. One size doesn’t fit all. (And it looks multinational corporations/businesses will end up enslaving us all – we have to keep the internet free.)
Thanks for taking the time for a great comment. (Oh, I have uncle that’s been a card carrying communist and atheist who’s much older than you – lots of philosophical diversity in this family…which is one reason why I am baffled about these little college students who cannot have civil debates about ideas and can only wail, wave signs someone else hands them and can’t verbalize their beliefs or ideas – failure by their parents, first, and their schools, secondly. Sad. They miss out on a lot of interesting discussions and intellectual fun…maybe if they could/would bother to read?) Hasta later
