Elephant in the yard
Bulky and bothersome is an understatement when there’s an elephant in the yard.
It would be nice to have a clear view of things. Especially with the landscape awake and cooperating. But he blocks everything.

We’d try to budge him to a different, less intrusive spot, but he just locks up and refuses to move.
Blockade or not, things have to be watered. Go ahead. Drag the hose across his feet…not a shift nor a shuffle.
I don’t want to even think about what’s under him.
It’s not that we don’t like him. There’s an air of Sesame Street’s Mr. Snuffleupagus about him…but he’s never been invisible. To anyone. Ever.
Oh, OK. It’s my fault. I said they could bring him home.
And it wasn’t too bad at first when he happily fit back against a wall out of sight of the living room windows.
Guess, it’s like bringing a cat home: Almost never seen until it gets comfortable. And then it’s too late.
He’s aging. Coat paling. Joints sounding a bit rusty.
Well, he came to the right place. Once here, it’s a forever home. Even for aging grills the size of elephants.
Reality is, we’re fond of him and have gladly replaced parts as needed. Kept him snuggly covered in winter.
Currently waiting for replacement valves for the manifold (that entire part no longer available) and found a nice, just the right size, stainless scrap to switch out part of his worn undercarriage.
Who said old fashion, hot rod car mechanic experiences don’t translate as useful life skills?
Elephant grill maybe old, but still shining and ready to heat things up.

The elephant grill is rather amused by the fact that for there last few months we’ve been using a little grill that looks like a tiny satellite and charcoal. The super sized one is out of production and some parts have just had it. Still it’s better made than many new ones/works really well…and already paid for, so we’re fixing it bit by bit as we have time and can find parts necessary. So Elephant grill is playing backyard tourist for a little bit longer.

Actually he’s enjoying being cool while his tiny Weber satellite-style side kick is all a-glow at being fired up at the current time. Gotta love the little ones HA HA.

We have one too. Maybe not as old as yours but more than a decade. Sturdy and as long as the parts are replaceable it has a home with us along with rescued cats, frogs and fish. “Sucker” is tattooed on my forehead but sometimes I think it really says “lucky.”

I’ve tried to think of it as a landscape boulder, but…just not working.
But when working, it’s really great…and it is paid for. Don’t think it’ll ever work as a planter though HAHA

We keep ours by the garage doors where we can’t see it from the porch. Even with a cover it’s not a beauty.

I keep telling staff “It won’t pass as a decorative fire pit…”
Needs a relocation program with a new pavestone pad around the corner…..Maybe with the storage bench/cabinet along side to keep it company.

That rat that holed up in our ancient grill a year ago, finally did it in. We never could burn off the “piss” smell. I never felt confident about using it after that. Tainted I guess. Shortly after we put it on the curb and it was snagged up in the night, a “deal” on a pellet grill came along. I daresay I’m in love with this new pellet grill. It’s already made cooking Paleo meals a breeze. I’m a smokin’ fool these days!

Elephants never forget – smells either. YUCK. Maybe it ran off to join the circus retirees in Florida? Benn looking at those pellet grills – maybe some luck during the Father’s Day or 4th of July sales. Grilling and smoking make so much more sense for cooking just about anything – perfect climate for it.
