Ain’t Red Rocks’ star dust

Oh, OK. It's upside down, but looks cooler that way: Stage lights during Tom Petty concert. Woodlands. ALL rights reserved. Copyrighted. NO permissions granted

Running down a dream. Upside down: matches the event.©

You wait for it. With a daring of overridden fear. The thrill promised.

Like the few seconds between turning the knob on the gas stove, hearing that frantic click, click, click, before the whoosh and the fire.

Concerts are like that.

Last weekend Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers arrived for their 40th Anniversary Tour performance at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Woodlands, TX.

Of course, a sold-out crowd.

Rock’s better in Red, though.

Next time, we’ll roll back to Denver even if it means a forced march road trip.

Eagles’ guitarist Joe Walsh was stellar as the opener.

The audience was right with him. Expectations built for the headliner.

Joe Walsh is somewhere in that white blob. Just view from prone position on the ground – sort of like the blond drunk chick with the flailing elbows who was vertically challenged even before Petty took the stage. Gotta learn to pace yourself.©

Petty played the list, but…

It’s complicated:  a good concert is a fine weaving between the musicians, the play list, and the audience. This time some intangible chord didn’t wrap.

Petty’s performance seemed a bit too much like a let’s-get-this-done precision stage show with little connection with the audience. I’d hate to say he phoned it in, ’cause the music hit the mark, but…

The English Webb sisters, Charlie and Hattie, well-known vocalists and musicians in their own right, didn’t seem to be utilized to add the dimension they are capable of…although tambourine skills are helpful, I suppose.

An audience a bit too well-heeled? Too suburban? Good mix of old, young, stylish, and the flip of flops, yet an odd flatness even though everyone enthusiastically knew the words and was more than willing to boogie.

Last time at Red Rocks all 3 components were up and running down a dream.

Placed best in shows.

OK. Not aliens. Joe Walsh and crew. Worthy of being seen from outer space.©

Everything considered, it was a pleasant evening, but calling a Tom Petty concert “pleasant” is  a little weird.

Shouldn’t feel like going out for dinner and a show, right?

But hey, got some really intriguing abstract artsy images.

Lightly delighted.

What? You don’t know rocks from Red Rocks?

Rocks of ages. People never could stay away. Even before the Utes most likely. Officially promoted in 1906 as a unique outdoor entertainment venue with perfect acoustics, Red Rocks Amphitheater benefited from major improvements by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1941.  Beatles, Hendrix, the Dead, as well as Opera and Easter services. (We’ll ignore that 5 year ban after the Jethro Tull riot..) Still rockin’ after all those years.  Never been? Bucket list it.

I’ve never made it to Red Rocks. Back in the day, I did get to Telluride for bluegrass, which was sweet enough. On the other hand, I’ve never been to Cynthia Woods, either. But, I saw Buffett at the Florabama, so there’s that. Glad you had a good time — the photos are great.

The wild flowers and more are calling you to CO. although you meander other directions typically. If new and old agers are correct, the energy there changes everything.
The pavilion was redone after Ike and I hadn’t seen it in action in current form. I always like that soaring white architecture – less intrusive than glass and bricks – fits with music. It was a lot of fun – watching the people as much as the show. Nothing like a whole bunch there to have fun. I wasn’t going to take pictures at all, but the green and blue lights created such a Sci Fi feeling. I think a road trip is calling…
      Thanks fort tuning in

That would have been a great concert – anywhere! But Red Rocks as a venue has long been on my bucket list. Lucky for those of us who will never likely make it to crossing off that bucket-list item there are videoed concerts available online. I know, not the same, but I can watch and enjoy while sitting on my Bequia verandah …

Maybe a Red Rocks concert would do well with those fancy goggles they are selling for video gaming? Hmmm, population’s aging, so potential with those?
Writers have good imaginations, so grab a chair and a nice cool drink and search the online offerings. Just like being there.

Oh I gasped when I read the Webb sisters were there. I saw them ‘backing’ Leonard Cohen (RIP) in Liverpool THE best concert I have ever been to – and they were amazing – casually taking off jackets, folding them, doing smooth back flips on the spot… not to mention playing harps… and singing like angels. Wow those two. Sublime, as he called them. Oh Leonard, we got it darker 😦

The Webb sisters (and that concert) are legendary. Supposedly that concert is where Petty saw them and became determined to get them on board.
Will be looking for where they show up and trying to see them again. Angels is what everyone calls them.

Moody Blues at Red Rocks? – can’t imagine anything much better than that.
These tickets were an unexpected gift…think Santa’s going to have a different list from me next winter…checking the RR website…the drive’s not that brutal (haha)

We have kids in Denver. Makes it easy. I like Tom Petty too but I’ve never seen him in person.

Walsh alone would have been worth the trip – he rocked. His whole crew rocked.(And he had that cool shark shirt)
It didn’t matter that tornadoes and hail was predicted for that night, nothing was stopping us. (Weather shifted and we were ok – probably because I hauled my old sailboat foul weather coat along…one of best purchases ever…take it and it never rains!

Saw Joe Walsh many years ago opening for Stevie Nicks. He was a great opening act indeed. I don’t know if he had a $350 t-shirt on back then but it surely was (still) more expensive than mine!

Walsh alone would have been worth the price. He and everyone with him on the stage were totally into the music. Rock like that and you can wear any price shirt you want.

Drool… Tom Petty sold out in OKC within hours. We were out of town when tickets went on sale. What a bummer. I have been to lots of great concerts in my life… not so inclined to these days as I’m not tolerant of the crowds. Of course when I was young I probably never noticed much… I was too busy partying with friends. 🙂 I have been to Red Rocks once for a summer jam back in the early 80’s. It was a gorgeous and unusual place.

Getting these tickets was something of a miracle: 2 cell phones, and on another with Amer.Express who can help grab tickets faster sometimes. Sold out faster than you can blink. Actually these were a gift in reciprocation for a previous Petty concert at Red Rocks – and a complete surprise to us. Cool. (and not being much for crowds, actually the Pavilion luckily turned out to be sane and organize.)
What a night. (Sorry for slow response – been away from screens for a bit…dogs wanna have fun!)
      Thanks for joining the party

Ah, Red Rocks. Legendary venue. Have never been, even though I live in north Denver, and I’ve probably missed my chance. Don’t think I could manage all those steps now.

Hmmm, seems they should have ramps or something – maybe special seating like the baseball games/Pavilion did here for easy access. Maybe ushers, too? I was surprised how many Petty fans were rocking out in the walkers and wheel chair area a couple of rows below us. Nothing like enjoying life no matter the age.
How about taking the grand kids?…after we all win the lottery. HAHA
(Sorry for the slow response. Been finishing up the yard work before the temps slide into summer.)
