A place for when you are too exhausted to hold your head up or when feeling like it’s not just your three-days-of-misery-and-then-it’s-over cold. One where the heavy door swings open as warmth rushes out to bathe your face – and the rest of you knows it will all be all right, too.

After wandering in the local wilderness full of restaurants, we thought one had been granted.

Unbelievable good fortune with a new deli opening. (B’ezrat HaShem)
Said to be the new second location of our favorite Victor’s Deli far away.
That one was like eating in a Jewish grandmother’s kitchen: old and young – even pajamas and fuzzy slippers welcomed.
The owners were like their booths: well-worn, but supportive.
Our first visit to the new deli left us underwhelmed.
Same name, same sign fonts, same colors, same interiors, same menu – but quantity, quality, and service?
Meh.
We won’t talk about the pickle.
Last week we noticed the new deli’s sign had changed.
Clarification for the neighborhood.
Still sporting the black and white checkerboard. Oh, the shattered dreams of towering Reuben sandwiches, overflowing plate lunches, just made meatloaf, and healing chicken soup with matzo balls.©
We didn’t realize. It’s New Delhi.

New sign for the new deli. Entirely different set of expectations. (But truth in advertising: this establishment hasn’t been there since 1988 and this version is not identical to the original Victor’s deli which actually came over from Beaumont in 1988…checkerboard and all.)©

Sigh. The Kolache Place will have to do for comfort food …although there’s a sign up about Nick’s NY Style deli opening soon even closer….close enough to walk and has a patio…no booths, but maybe…fingers crossed. Thanks for adding a comemnt to this sack

I remember seeing this place, but I can’t remember where. No matter — I’m not much in the mood for an Indian deli. Delhi. Whatever. I wonder if they’ve considered that confusion in a customer’s mind isn’t a good thing? More to the point, I wonder if they have a good lawyer on the staff. (Presuming, of course, that the original didn’t decide taking a flyer on curry was a good thing.)

A puzzlement: is it the younger generation who inherited the name/logo/concept from original owners and wanted to put “their own touch on it” (like it’s a house to redo or something – that “our own touch” thing has gotten to be such a popular phrase)
Or is it the kids of the owners of that wonderful Indian restaurant directly across the street (NASA rd1) wanting to do something more trendy and trying to attract a different bunch of customers with a bar scene?
In any case we expect that side wall to be repainted with the new taglines soon. Can’t tell you how crushed we were.

Not only is this hysterical, it brings back bad memories. When I was a mountain climber in Colorado, there was a story circulating among fellow peak baggers about a hike leader who would celebrate each summit with her group by pulling down her pants in front of everyone and transforming into a territorial Tom before their very eyes. It didn’t give her squatters rights or anything (sorry, it had to be said) but it sure as hell made everybody careful where they chose to sit for lunch.

Yes as we already have a really great traditional Indian restaurant right across the street from there. Maybe that one is diversifying? Thanks for weeping along – here, have a kolache. Fruit, cheese, or meat?

Perhaps if we hadn’t been long time admirers of the other Victor’s it wouldn’t have been so confusing…oh, but wait , we asked if they were at ll connected and they cheerfully – with confidence – that “Yes, we are the same in a new location”. In any case, we do wish them luck now that it’s clarified/morphed…although there’s a really really great Indian restaurant right across the street…but it’s a family place – no bar..

I’d have been crushed. I get in the mood for certain food and can practically taste it before I get there. NY deli I love. Indian food, no. And you mentioned kolaches! Haven’t thought of them or had any since I was a kid. My dad had a patient who used to gift him with huge boxes (the dept. store boxes for gift boxing suits and dresses) of homemade kolaches. All flavors, but apricot was my favorite.

Apricot! That was always an exotic fruit choice in our house compared to the normal apples and bananas.
We have one of the most famous and best kolache places in 2 counties close by. It’s a hole in the wall, but for decades has been the one to requested by stars, singers, rock and roll singers, and assorted celebrities to cater kolaches backstage. You have to get there early to have a choice – and when the morning’s baking is gone, the close up. (fruit ones are the best!)

Didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh as I too…once I have it in my head to order a specific food item…get very cranky when said item doesn’t materialize in short order. Indian deli…who “new?”

You do understand the disappointment. There’s another NY deli opening even closer which we have hopes for, but no comfy booths with grandmother type greeting you at the door and register. But there is a patio gazebo for nice weather. Thanks for adding a comment to chew on!
