Simply a simmering testing ground for higher level thinking and endurance.
A few warm ups to get you into the spin of things:
- Winning the suspicious “Whaaaaat? Really?” Award: It’s no longer necessary to floss your teeth anymore. Yep, hey, who needs teeth? Old people are looking forward to no longer having bleeding gums (and eating only jello). Small children and busy moms are cheering the end of those silly strings. Dentists are tossing their instrument trays. Cats are protesting researchers snatching of hours of batting and pouncing entertainment (and with their little lives already being so hard). No doubt some are mouthing conspiracy.
- For the “Should Have Thought of That” Award: A son now facing murder charges for murdering his parents: he called the police who couldn’t get in as there was no signs of forced entry and they had to wait for the 16 yr old to turn off an expensive alarm system before entering and finding the murder weapon left on the counter. Tragic all the way around. Dunderhead.(When did just running away from home if unhappy stop being an option?)

- The coveted “Oh, Toughen Up” Award goes to area high schools who are now holding football and marching band practices on bakin’ concrete parking lots and artificial turf. Luckily temps are lower this week: only 98 – 100F with humidity pushing the actual “feel like” temperature into triple digits for afternoons. Hey, it was actually a cool 79 degrees at 8 am this morning. Perfect timing for those fall catalogues loaded with sweaters (That’s warm garments, not hot high school marching models. Spelling counts.) Summer practice is one of those remembered-for-life high school experiences. Wouldn’t trade them for all the ..well, on second thought, maybe a cooling blanket and some Gatorade. (Educators are wringing hand over students’ lack of higher level thinking. What if the schools’ administrators and coaches first tried modeling some commonsense thinking skills? Or is this just another example of adults saying “Do as we teach in science and health classes, not as we do in the search for applause and bragging rights”?
- And finally the “Ask Not What your Country Can Do For You. Ask What You Can Do For Your Country” award goes to Olympic swimmers, sailors, windsurfers, and sports broadcasters who are shutting their mouths in Rio. WHO would like to clear the air about it too. (We won’t discuss the body floating among sailboats last week…). They always say “Play is serious work”. Work related injuries can be expected, but WHO knew. Let the games begin!

I am all for “common sense thinking skills”. I wrongfully thought people just observed and learned on their own… but apparently not. So…… are you going to quit flossing your teeth? 😀

With reading skill falling even more, TV is cheerfully filling people in on information…only they don’t bother to read the whole study either. It said if people don’t floss correctly, it doesn’t work (and most people aren’t flossing correctly).Nothing was mentioned about conenction between flossing, gums, and heart disease (big topic/mandate in 2013) Oh, people without teeth die sooner so there’s less health care costs.
(Odd the 2014 study about pelvic exams came out now…when insurance companies are complaining they can’t make enough money and are ready to raise rates in Oct. Also a small study which is quite clear that researchers only looked at one cancer and prevention by exams – not the full range of potential diseases/issues/problems…and one of the reasons they pointed out as to why the exams are a negative: obese women are embarrased and fell “disrespected”. Oh, that’s a great reason to stop going to the doc.) I give up. Sheep over the ledge. Good plan to stay where you are out of the nonsense. Thanks for adding a thinking comment

I’ve never heard that Epstein line. All I can say is, “Perfect.” The old “I’ll start work early, so it will be cool” approach isn’t making it. I’m about to start whining, myself. 🙂

That’s a great one. How did it manage to hide for so long? (I’m beginning to feel like Uber for images and quotes – they show up, sit around and when the perfect seating appears, one goes “Oh, there’s my ride.”)
I’m whining. It’s officially too darn hot…and the band kids are out marching. Gads. We’re going to get one of those dog cooling blankets to toss over you at work…and hire some fan wavers. Last few weeks of sometimes boaters and vacationers showing up – back to school on the horizon. Maybe the traffic will get back to normal soon (“OH, look dear! That looks like a cute place. Turn now. I’ll just wave at people as you cut across all the lanes”) Thanks for adding a simmering comment

I still can’t believe that the Olympic competitors are going to get into that water – ugggh! The Olympic committee should have minimum quality standards before allowing the games to proceed.

These Olympics are rather like a bad marriage: promises, promises, promises to be good, but…The committee kept cutting them slack and tossing more and more money (which disappeared). Maybe the giant waves crashing Copa were a final warning? The Australians have moved to a hotel as some “dorm” caught on fire from wiring problems, toilets don’t work, and there’s obvious mold on walls. Guess the committee kept hoping until it was too late.
I understand it’s a nice concept to spread the Games and the money around, but maybe it’s time for the Games to have a permanent home back in their home?

Comment not associated with post — Your posts initially come into my reader marked private. (It took me a while to figure out this blog was doing this!) I get the email notification and I can access but not comment. Then a few hours later all is good. WP is wonky again (or maybe I am!).

WP has been beta testing new stuff for a couple of weeks. At least your Reader is working – my is fogged out at times, so I ‘ve been using email notices and links in comments to find people. Sigh. I hope they get it all straightened out soon. Wish they would do a “heads up” notice when they tinker. I’ve changed posting times trying to work around them, but obviously that’s not working either.
Appreciate you touching base. We’ll all just hang on with the roller coaster WP ride.

The WP chaos is no longer worth getting annoyed about. Learning to roll with the waves of fun (and ignore the stats). All the tinkering has made reading around the blog neighborhoods more diffiuclt – wonder if that’s why so many of the blogs I read are on vacation in Aug…mybe they know something I don’t…probably lots I don’t HA HA. And then there was the time a couple of years ago when Google and “friends” were “doing research on blogs and social media” and it leaked out they were manipulating blog appearances and placements. Supposedly they found out if bloggers saw stats falling they would immediately go out and start reading/subscribing to other blogs in an attempt the drive traffic back to their own blog. That’s a benefit to hosting groups like WP: the more blog traffic, the better for advertisers and the more atractive their company looks to investors and advertisers.
As long as blogging is fun and interesting, no worry with what’s behind the curtain, right?

Common sense for us to heed, but alas, not so common. We’ve had warnings for months, some instances, years. Simply cyclical.
Michelle Obama is correct, when people go low, we go high. Oh how I wish more people would rise to that.

I’m still flossing. Nothing more annoying than something caught in my teeth. Gum just doesn’t do it! Especially since I’m cosseting my temporary crown until the real one is ready.
Rio has always been a disaster in the making. They aren’t doing themselves any favours by hosting the Olympics. I’m very thankful Ireland is too damn small to even consider hosting, the Eurovision nearly bankrupted us back in the day!

Dunderheaded news story…left out the part in the study about the problem being most people don’t bother to take time and effort to floss correctly (so no they might as well not even bother). Really odd that this is an older study…and they left out the part about how taking care of your gums (by flossing) does impact heart disease – that discovery was applauded news about 2 years ago. Gotta love the media – always tossing out “headlines” that will grab viewers’ attention.
Rio ought to give plenty of thrills one way or the other. One of the dorms caught on fire a few days ago. The concept of helping a country by bringing the games and money is idealistic – usually people are forced to move so they can build facilities for the tourists. Normal imporvement projects are dropped and only the festival grounds get attention. Committee ought to rethink. Maybe time to take it back where it all started – and leave it there. (We’ve had Olympic trials, Final 4 NBA, and Super Bowl here. Ugh. Wish President and hanger-oners would stay away, too…they create traffic/ getting to your house chaos just wanting to dine at some little place or walk around and window shopping. We truly are the ‘little unimportant people”

OH, chill sounds soooo wonderful. THe only thing about excessive heat from a high sitting over us is that the hurricanes/tropical storms and the Saharan dust cloud are blocked and have to go elsewhere. So I’m afraid to complain…but parts of the lawn are crisping and ready to go into August brown.
