Gumbo. (Not the yummy kind)

Threes. They say trouble always comes in threes.

First was the pelican attack on helicopters.

Then at 2:30 am, a marina fire near the fuel dock. One power boat. One sailboat. One sunk.

(Every dog within miles barked frantically until it was out and it wasn’t all that fast.)

 Video of fire here.

Sky. Water. Earth.

Now to survive Mud Gate.

The soil – well, the stuff that’s native here and not developer imported – is gumbo: dense, heavy clod-like clay.

It doesn’t dry out quickly. We’ve had three weeks of rain, fog, drizzle. Mush City.

Add eight huge dog feet.

You know that “I Love Lucy” show where Lucy stomps grapes? Those purple feet and legs? It’s just like that.

Only with dog fur on the dainty legs.

Dogs wanna have fun. (Me, too. It’s sunny.)

Maybe this placeholder post will amuse until the real one can get done.

Right now Molly and her sleep-over pal, The German, are needing a bit of supervision.

Did you know dogs can hear grubs under ground? And dig them out with their noses? (They have been scolded about digging with their paws. It’s technically different; therefore….)

And dig lots of other things up, too. (If a dogs stands on the patio and digs up a potted plant, then it’s not the same as digging up a flowerbed, right? Insert very innocent doggy looks here)

And they delight in rolling like steam rollers in the dormant grass until it’s probably past any hope of turf revival in the spring.

Yes, I now know what the surface of the moon must look like. (FYI note sent to NASA.)

Although many proclaim mud baths beneficial, prefer to be digging out ideas rather than mud.

(Molly, bring back that washrag! It’s for paw washing not burying.)

The third not quite so charming?

Come on, Mom. We wiped our feet, really. How can you resist these doggy faces? ©

Stay snug, my lovelies (That was “snug” – not “smug”, German!)

My bedroom window looks toward the lighthouse and that corner of the marina where all the excitement was. I woke up about four o’clock, looked out, and saw all the pretty red and yellow and blue flashing lights. Humph, I thought, look at that. And I rolled over. Then, what I’d seen penetrated my consciousness, and I thought, “WHAT?!?” By the time I’d figured out that, whatever it was, there weren’t any flames, the pretty lights were blinking out, one by one, and cars were leaving. So I went back to sleep. I still can’t figure out why I never heard the commotion. I guess my place is better insulated than I realized.

It was difficult to hear anything over The German’s insistent barking at the back door (facing towards the marina). And every single dog in the neighborhood seemed to be barking, too – forever. Outside you could smell it even at daybreak as we dog walked to the island. They did a good job if only 3 boats were damage. Hotel guests got quite a show.
Your place must be insulated very well.
We are so lucky with this warm weather. Not staying inside for long – can’t waste that sun that so many would trade their snow shovels for. Thanks for splashing a comment over here

Ha! Got see the German visiting – Molly seems to be enjoying her guest.I can see you have your hands full – and what a sad looking crew peering through the door -“Please, Please, Pretty Please?” Ha!

They are both thrilled. We have to insist on enforced quiet time/naps periodically or they will get overly tired and cranky. It really is play until you drop. Fingers crossed the sunny weather holds. They need the run time. Thanks for running along!

Mom always said I was naughtier when there was a visitor to encourage me! RC is smart. Wouldn’t want to dirty up that gorgeous fur with flying mud clumps! Gotta love dogs having fun!

Flying mud clumps is the reality. RC’s request for the back suite of rooms to have limited access for the duration…while The German’s granny cat would close her eyes and oddly fold in her ears and totally ignore The German’s bark and nose pokes without moving ( rather zen-like…totally undisturbed) RC Cat gets most offended at the bad manners. Thanks for bouncing along

We turn on Dog TV’s restful music during Time Out periods….oddly it does work…makes me sleepy though. (Will wander over shortly to see what creatures are featured there today. You always have the most wonderful photos.)

Fortunately the wood is pretty bard surfaced, but there’s this odd grey smudged film on the surface. Shop vacs are good….I’m sayin’ the grey haze is acting as a protective coating until the visit is over and cleanup can actually make any progress….Sorry, you guys have to keep the ugly weather until The German leaves…(although Molly is exhausted – the German keeps earlier hours than we do usually. RC Cat is mumbling “3 days. Fishy stink…”)
Paw waves to your mom and everyone else. Take care if traveling. Thanks for checking in

Thank you. I decided to drive home yesterday. I didn’t want to get stuck in another New England storm, and it sounds like it’s going to be a doozy.

Love the nose art on the back door too! The beagle keeps digging up the yard looking for moles. I wish he’d find it and kill it already. He did this in Omaha where the problem was much worse and the front yard there also looked like a moonscape (that was how we described it too).

Nothing like a dog running up with a welcoming doggy kiss and you get a wiff of fresh wet dirt covering their nose. And with two of them, if one noses up a spot, the other wants to join in. Pavestone backyard is sounding more and more attractive. Thanks for chasing a comment over (I’ll be by shortly…as soon as I can convince the German to ignore the squirrels..for a minute. One minute is all I ask…going to be a busy week….)

just love that cross-fit doggies ♥ and well, did Molly eat up those pelicans attacking the helicopter link…it goes to this post. “Molly, did you do this?????” && how can you, mom, resist those two cutie-patooties at the door?!?!!!!! 😛 cheers!

Must be the flying mud and doggy races rearranging the link (thanks for relaying that problem!). Or the pups don’t feel anyone needs to leave their post. Both of them are crashed out right now (won’t last long) We looked out and there was a large-ish loose labrador puppy on the porch. Molly and the German were trying to tell him how to open the door, we are sure. No collar. (Where is that invisible sign saying “all animals welcomed here”?). He tore off around the corner (making the poor neighbor cat frozen up against her garage door happy). Molly says, she’s sure she can run the new dog down and bring him back…more the merrier! Or was that muddier? Paw waves! Thanks for running by to chat

Dogs are so smart in many ways. Run and be busy until tired, then sleep. Mostly run, run, run right. Gotta get that all in before the rain returns on Friday. Mud wrestling possible for the weekend? (May have to make a run to Big Lots for more towels…and laundry soap…) Thanks for sloshing along

“It’s all a bad dream and will be over soon” No doubt that’s what RC is telling herself…that and snarling “three days, fishy stink” at staff.
Meanwhile, discovering if it’s true mud baths are really good for wood floors, too. Both organic and having root connections? Thanks for sliding a comment by

My sister-in-law’s GS mix is the most digging dog I have ever seen. They fenced in an entire half-acre for her and she dug up every inch of it – not a blade of green anywhere.

    Good Luck!

When The German was younger, her Person created a similar arrangement at her house. Digging is apparently a great stress relief method…but they don’t get blisters on their paws from shovels …but hey, maybe using a backhoe would be as relaxing for people? Thanks for running in with a woofderful comment!

Oh, it’s fun city here this week. (and everyone is tired enough to sleep soundly at night) The really funny thing is that the German is definitely a Morning Person who wakes up ready to go, while Molly has become a slow bleary riser. I have to run interference until Molly wakes up a bit.
RC is given escorts to and from the sunny room each day. Even with that, she prefers to ignore the whole situation/riot and stay in her private suite. She keeps muttering “3 days. Fishy stink…”
Thanks for stirring in a comment

There is something about mud – something primal and universal. It’s developmental – for kids and for the human race, probably. Maybe dogs are just trying to spread the word? Thanks for sloshing along
