Hostage by grounding.
“Are you an eagle?”
(Inquisitive eyes. Young. On the level.)
“I don’t have feathers” (Smile delivered. No desire to crush thinking.)
“You fly.”
“Mostly birds fly.” (Directing gaze to soaring seagulls.) “Easier with feathers.”
“Maybe a bird’s not what you think it is.”
The sand underfoot grabbing. Trapping next steps.
Scoffing mind ridicules.
Flight interrupted.
Why is it easier to believe what eyes decide to report than what reality may be?
“Thoughts soar.”
Perhaps, then…
Phil, the Philosopher Mouse of the Hedge.
Other flights of fancy:
- Get facts from local birds. Houston Audubon. Reports on Galveston Bay Oil Spill, the Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary, the beach, and migratory birds. Links to videos and interviews. Pictures.
- Procter & Gamble donates tons of Dawn dish soap to bird rescue groups. There’s little publicity about this. As Ken Hoffman said in his column, “If it can clean a gallon of crude off a pelican, think what it can do to last night’s spaghetti on your dinner plates.” 90% of birds cleaned by oil survive and are released. Dawn for all!
- The most gentle Big Bird of all, NASA 905, is coming home to roost soon. The Boeing 747 modified to give earth-held space shuttles a lift will be driven down the roads from Ellington to the Space Center. The shuttles’ chaperon will be given a place of respect and recognition in public view as well as our hearts.

Sometimes, I just can’t help myself. I had no idea this ever showed up on Family Guy , but I remember it from my senior year in high school. Good grief. But it IS bird related!

I had forgotten this one – it’s great! Thanks for feathering the nest with the perfect trinket.

I’m sorry. I need help with this one. Penguins? Perhaps my mind is still in Belize.

If only we all Belize, it would be fine! Belize in magic!…oh, sorry getting carried away (giggles) You’re working too hard – it’s just about “is seeing really believing?” Kids have less experiences filed in their heads so sometimes they see more true…well, you do fly sometimes don’t you…come to think of it swim, too (fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly…best leave this at that…) Thanks for swooping over

Love it. Love these views you brought to our minds eye like feathers in the wind. They are all different, but then so are we all.

That writing thoroughly reminds me of the video about the kiwi that did everything to fly just once!

(giggles!) The kiwis found an alternative? Their sailboats really fly! Thanks for jumping over

I like Dawn dish soap… works on greasy laundry stains, too. Glad they have donated to help the birds. I’m surprised they haven’t turned it into an ad campaign.

Dawn has kept their assistance very quiet for years – said it wasn’t about making money, but doing the right thing. Very recently – at many people’s urging- they now have a picture of bird/duck on label with a small note about their efforts. Happiest bubbles around. Thanks for splashing along

Fair play to Dawn – they have a product that works and they know it so donating is more than a flight of fancy!
Your photography is getting really good! I love it when you share your own.

I love my iPhone! Rarely use it as a phone, but it is so wonderful to have a camera in hand all the time, isn’t it?

Rather refreshing that Dawn didn’t go all-out on the publicity with the oil spills and how it has helped so many birds. That’s so rare in this day and age. I wish more companies would follow suit!

It is very rare. Really annoying all the stadiums have product names rather than iconic local names. Thanks for sudsing up a comment
