Tag. You’re it.

Boy in suit. From 1925 "Pampered Youth" film still with Ben Alexander(USPD pub.date, artist life/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Yeah, I’m resourceful, especially with a wad of post-it notes tagging along in my pocket.(“Pampered Youth” film promo still of actor Ben Alexander. USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Instructions left in an obvious place. Is that too much to ask? Apparently.

It takes time to sniff out all the nuances of a new position.

“Loft” I kept getting. “Loft” What the heck. A message as useful as one written in lemon juice by a bored kid magician: “Everything you need to know is in the loft.”

As in jumping high into the air? (What? 6:00 am is too early for that?)

“Loft” as the fleeting lob between the time the tennis ball leaves the hand and it lands? (I let it land, stared at it, hoping “X” marked the spot to dig for it…but, no. Oh, clods.)

“Loft” perhaps as tucked into a fluffy pillow or comforter? (Tearing into those seems risky – and unnecessary….except if there was a cat involved, well, you know how they think.)

“Could it have meant “lost” instead of “loft”? I think someone seriously lost it.” Searching the backyard for a clue. (© image)

Eventually, after much exhaustive searching, a whiff of something –

Yes, a tiny sniff of revelation sent me past the place-that-must-have-once-held-a-litter-box (You can tell – there’re a smidge of cat hair still stuck in the baseboard) into the closet  – and voilà: a loft fit for a cat.

Or much smaller, athletic dog…while I was able to hop up on the small container bin, once I got two paws onto the shelf and was wondering what to do with the rest of me if I pushed on forward, AM – Adopted Mom – yelled at me to “not even think about it and get down and out of the closet”.

I realized the actual lofty knowledge I require was actually shelved right there in front of my nose: “The Care and Needings of The Realm: including standing treaties, a schedule of yearly events, helpful management hints, and “All the Rights and Responsibilities of the RC of the Realm”.

Hope to clarify a few things….

Things like worn post-it notes in cabinets and on cartons about “Boxing of children”, “Defense against the annual Orange Vegetable Intruders”, and what the heck is an “RC”….and now I’m tagged to be one?

Of course it’s vague and confusing – written by a cat.

The previous Resident Canine (who assumed the title from the long ruling, legendary RC Cat) left only a brief note on the windowsill apologizing for not sorting out and leaving a more coherent instruction manual, having been called away suddenly and unexpectedly, there was only time to scratch out “Everything you need to know is in the loft.”

So, now to begin.

RC? I’m tagged as an RCResident Canine? Can’t the title be a little more lofty? Like HRH?

Hank, Royal Husky-Malamute? That could work if I use the hyphen. I’s trendy to use hyphenated these days.

The Honorable Rowdy Hank? Titles should offer some identifying quality, some say.

Hank, the Regal Houndster perhaps? That sounds modern and hip.

But the Tradition of The RC of the Realm…

I’ll work on that. First things first.

Like can anyone explain why AM got so excited when I stood up and grabbed the 18 egg plastic carton off the counter?

I wouldn’t have dropped it if she hadn’t startled me with that shriek.

Was only going to see what was in it – and then give it back….after a little tug of war game.

What’s the big deal? She wanted scrambled eggs – I just pre-scrambled some for her in the carton.

Good I located the instruction manual. Appears there’s a lot to unscramble around here.

Pondering over that “staff” designation.

AM certainly doesn’t look like a stick. Maybe in Days of You’re when the RC Cat first arrived.

Although I’ve found both AM and DA (Dad, Adopted..also not very stick-like although he’s quite good at throwing sticks…although the purpose of that action is unclear..) are quite supportive, so the “staff” possible indication of able to be leaned on and their helpfulness?

Maybe a music-related nickname as AM does sing silly songs a lot…all about being sort-of like an EPIRB locating device, she says.

3 worried men in doorway. Ben Aalexander on right. Still photo of cast of Felony Squad( (USPD, pre-1978, pub.date/Commons.wikimedia.org)

“Don’t look to us for answers, pup. Once you’re tagged and out of the shelter, you’re on your own.”(Grown up Ben Alexander on right with the cast of Felony Squad. Maybe staffed in supporting role, but no longer as thin as a stick. USPD/Commons.wikimedia.org)

Best to consider during a short nap….some place quiet – where I won’t get stepped on. Stretching out unseen right behind AM as she is doing stuff has resulted in a few ouchies…

Could be why there’s so much leftover cat hair in the closet: frequent retreat to a lofty thinking spot.

Hmmm, wonder how tightly that closet door is shut.

Yours in Paws and Disorder Pawsabilty and Order

I’ve wondered how things were going over there. Perfectly, it seems — or at least pretty much as would be expected. New monikers and new behaviors to be adjusted to or modified, depending: and that’s on both sides of the human/canine equation. Things will settle in eventually. Why, even a certain Christmas cactus finally has decided to stop pouting in its pot and start growing. Maybe its season has come!

“Well, to every season, turn, turn, turn…and I understand you’ve been spinning that Christmas cactus like a merry-go-round. WInding it up or maybe just making it dizzy, I dunno. I do know that AM got pretty dizzy when I spotted a cat outside…just protecting my vacancy…cats will push their way in, you know. Not willing to share good air conditioned real estate….except maybe with a plant…a pizza plant or burger plant…those would count as green manufacturing, right? Will enjoy a sit down and chat with you before long. Meanwhile stay cool. Paw waves – oh, let me just remove that loose bit of fluff that landed on you – Paw waves from the paw and order Hank.”

“Howdy, Maya and company. It’s been a week and I’ve already adjusted to leash without tripping any one yet. Enjoying touring the neighborhood to learn the route and a few other dogs. There are squirrels here! And AC. Lots better than the shelter which was a tad overcrowded, but kind. So far so good. Paw waves to Maya from Hank, the Paw and Tale wagging’ pup”

I want to boop his wonderful nose! He’ll get it and before you know it, he’ll be boss of the realm. Probably already is. After all there is no one in the house as interesting as he is. (He told me that!)

“It’s my new place and there’s no way I’m letting any cat attempt to loiter in the backyard..oh, yeah, some established treaty…but that cat better take those shades off and stop saying, ‘But it’s dark and my turn’. You have to watch them,,,cats can become squatters and before you know it, they are invited in in bad weather…and given a bowl….The dogs at the shelter warned me. Maybe once established and IF it appears I need a sidekick…one who can open packages on the top shelf of the pantry…or maybe I’ll just grow tall enough and not have to share. Challenges are fun. Talking about challenges, AM showed my you updated fireplace wall – now that’s classy….a few improvements around here? Might be worth bringing that it…I could nibble a bit of the current wall and see if that motivated anything…or maybe not right now. Timing is everything, snort! A bit of soft white hair fluff whisking you way – a souvenir! RC Cat’s note said people liked souvenirs when they visit. I’ll have to check with your Realm’s managers. (no one said cats weren’t smart realm managers!) Paw waves, Hank”

“Hera, Hera, darling. We have homes! Oh, yeah, you already know that. But we are so lucky! You’ll be pleased to know I’ve gotten used to leashes and haven’t really tripped anyone yet..or pull anyone to the ground upon seeing a cat. Neighborhood manners are so restricting, but worth the trade off – a cool safe place beats running the streets and scrounging for food. My people are busy helping me along, but will be around more to chat and check out your Staff’s art work. IF we wag tails, will that bring cooler weather in sooner? Well, maybe just naps on the tile right now. Paw solidarity! Yours, Hank”

” It may take a bit, but I’ll get things straightened out around here shortly….meanwhile lulling them into giving me most of what I want with some lovely leash cooperation and cuteness. Paws for fun! A cheery tail wag fluted your way…it’s like a fan…maybe it’ll help keep things cool around you. Paw and orders from Hank.”

I am sure he will review all of the rules and procedures associated with the storied history of his title in due time. Once Hank gets the hang of things, I am sure he will rule with a fair and equitable paw. It sounds like he is off to an egg-cellent start.

“Ah, AC and toys to toss around and not share – this is the life. Agreeing to walk on a leash is well worth the tradeoffs. Although it would be really nice if the crepe myrtle branches were a tad lower and easier to climb – that squirrel nest in the towering palm is to sigh, but they have to come down sometime…the figs in the tree next door are ripe. Thanks for the encouragement. Shaking off a lovely soft piece of fluff to breeze your way. A token of appreciation…the manual said visitors like a souvenir. Paws and orders in thanks from Hank.

“Paws up for you encouragement. Now if you had time, how about grabbing that chip bag on the pantry top shelf and putting down a little more wishing my reach…they seem to be putting stuff up so high..no problem opening the door, but that top shelf..will try shoving the chair over and trying that when no one is looking….but right now someone is always looking, It must be I’m just too wonderful to resist gazing at me? Appreciate your encouragement and will try to live up – no, astound – as my confidence and abilities grow. Hang on to your hat…oh, those teeth marks hardly show – it’s an autograph – my first impression of an autograph. Thanks for checking in on Paw and disorder, Hank”

” It’s beyond all dreams. The shelter dogs said to not hang back in the kennel – the these people looked like a great choice. And it’s been great so far – AC and a couch – lots more quiet and restful than the shelter…agreeing to walk on a leash is such a little trade off. So far so good. Paw waves!”

Aw, it won’t take him long to figure things out… Hank (an awesome redneck name BTW) has arrived and will no doubt bring some good entertainment, and I think it’ll be more about staff figuring him out rather than the other way around. ❤

“Thanks, ma’am. A good ole boy at the animal shelter gave me that name. I was kinda a favorite of his. – and it seems to fit: Big guy, blue eyes, big grin and happy personality. Yep, it’s totally me. So it stuck.
On top of that, I’m a dog of few words – lots of action. But have started vocalizing sometime when I have something to say. Wish they would go back to leaving food unattended on counter tops, though. I am quite able to pick up and eat what I want. Apparently that is not going to be encouraged here…and the pantry door is confusing..although I heard a previous visitor, The German, was talented in that regard. On the whole, I dig it here. AC is so much better than being on the street and scrounging for food. I’ll happily agree to walk mostly sedately on the leash in trade-off. …trying not to trip anyone…working on it. A big tail wag in your direction trying to waft some cool air your way. Hope everyone in your Realm is doing well and healing up. Fall is coming and then weather will be too nice to miss out on walks. Your friend, Hank the paw and orders guy.”

“Howdy, and yep. They are already running out at dawn instead of slug-a-bedding ’cause that’s about the only time it’s cool enough for a long walk right now. Besides nature is out even in subdivisions very early in ght morning…like squirrels! I’ve seen some of your pictures and intend on motivating these people to travel this fall to get some sightseeing and hiking in before they start whining ‘it’s too cold and wet’. Yep, work to do and they need me here. A happy tail wag to ya’, Hank the paw and full of orders dog.”
