Wooden be qwackers

Always carve your own opinions, but wooden, you know, isn’t what it is cracked up to be.(© Image)

It’s not any splashing fun treading aimlessly or constantly ducking in looking here for some new wave of words.

With a heat index around 109F, we’re not out in the back playing croquet.

Does anyone even play that anymore? That WHACK of mallets against wooden croquet balls echoed around our summer neighborhood as kids – along with the squealings of “You did that on purpose. Knocking my ball into the neighbor’s flowerbed. You’re not supposed to launch them. Mom said to play civilized. She meant no ōllamaliztliNo internal or external bruising. Mooommm!” (Of course the response was always “Unless there’s blood and lots of it, learn to settle things for yourself.”)

There was always a rush to grab the croquet balls that weren’t too lumpy or cracked.

OK, it may be true I used to hide the favorite, red stripped croquet ball in the garage. Completely justified. Trust me.

(FYI, those things don’t bounce very well on concrete driveways, so forget using croquet balls for any game involving that. Remember if using those balls for sidewalk bowling games, stand well back or risk serious ankle pain worse than that from clamp-on metal roller skates that have some diabolical attraction to ankle bones, and never volunteer to reset the improvised pins – don’t get snookered by older siblings or cousins sayin’ there’s something in the “rules” about croquet bowling suddenly transforming into dodgeball…)

Still for a few days, blogging time has to be reassigned.

Heading up to keep The German company. She’s better since managing to eat some…but of course, being hand feed portions of chicken does encourage a sense of privilege and ennui. Who could accuse her of being too capricious or finicky? (“Come on German, You love scrambled eggs – you try to sneak them off the counter all the time. Mashed potatoes in chicken broth? Ham, perhaps…it was popular yesterday. Bacon – uh, it’s , maybe not the healthiest choice, but…Salmon perhaps? Yes, it’s canned and not freshly grilled, but…..)

Anyway, she needs a sitter and yet another encourager for a bit. She’s the princess as long as she wants.

And we’re going to play with her Little Person, Mohawk Wu, in the mud. Kids need to play in the mud. The German will enjoy watching through the window.

RC Cat has been assured it will only be a very short loan of Staff. Molly has bargained for her giant ripped-in-some-places comforter (Well, it was bulky, lumpily folded, and needed to be restored into a nice dog nest…she grinned. It was the old bird dog imitation…) to be recycled/restitched for a car travel blanket and washable bed cover in order to not be totally miffed (and I know she’s chortling over the possibility of sleeping on the bed…)

So given permission and everything battened down as much as possible, I’m ducking out for a few days.

Meanwhile, mingle and talk among yourselves…Topics?

Hmmm. Bored games. And the art of sitting fancy.

Yep, those lazily paddling up to the keyboard rapids

Hasta later. Quack on!

Sending love and bacon-thoughts… I mean, salmon is good, healthy fats, but, but… bacon! Stay cool, and please give extra soft pats for me.

I fly back in two days… I’m really not looking forward to that inferno after basking in beautiful 60 and 70 degree temps. I’m still sending positive vibes your way, and a lot of love too.

Croquet is the only sport that includes a ball, that I love.

  7. aFrankAngle / Jun 26 2018 3:05 pm

Peace to all, and to all who still play croquet.

I remember playing croquet. I was really hoping the game you were referring to wasn’t the one where they used the enemy’s head as the ball, so I had to check. Have a safe trip
