Chasin’ the dream without Naugas
Space exploration fueled it. All about excitement, rocketing energy, tossing that darn, old, saggy, baggy cotton for modern, space age fabrics – and, for The Graduate, one word: “Plastics.”
Livin’ the Jetsons’ life was just around the corner.
Modern was coming at warp drive.
Today, as I opened emails, couldn’t help but chuckle at Crate and Barrel’s breathlessly announcing the arrival of their New and Now Fall Collection.
Images reminiscent of what became the signature of cheap hotel decor and those “affordable”, sparsely furnished, college apartments.
Mid-century eagerly rushed towards an idyllic, modern future. Now there, the reality doesn’t seem to match the dream.
Now going back and trying to find what was lost along the way.
Like in the song, “Everything old is new again”:
….Get out your white suit, your tap shoes and tails
Let’s go backwards when forward fails
And movie stars you thought were alone then
Now are framed beside your bed
Don’t throw the pa-ast away
You might need it some rainy day
Dreams can come true again
When everything old is new again
Get out your white suit, your tap shoes and tails
Put it on backwards when forward fails
Better leave Greta Garbo alone
Be a movie star on your own
And do-on’t throw the past away
You might need it some other rainy day
Dreams can come true again
When everything old is new again
When everything old i-is new-ew a-again
I might fa-all in love wi-ith you again
(Peter Allen)
Somehow the lyrics sit as well as the chairs

Yep – if able to jump back, far too many would misjudge and land where they never wanted to be! Thanks for poking the time warp here

Ah, and rose perfume/dusting powder. Warm, cozy, and soothing. (Everyone could use a bit of that life’s fabric right now) Thanks for picking a timely comment

My aunt had that chair in her living room that was done in Danish Modern [I think it was called]. Wonder if wood paneling is going to make a return? And how about Formica with space age patterns on it? So many possibilities, I’m almost giddy with excitement.

Danish Modern. That was it!
We all wanted Danish Modern – sophisticated…like smorgasbord appeared the modern trendy eatery around here.
Some of that paneling is hanging on still..will it now become sought after? As you say – the possibilities

Crate and Barrel is so expensive. They have an outlet store near us, but even that isn’t what I would consider inexpensive.

It’s always a wonder what companies show up in my email…it must be our zip code or something….or that darn cat is sneaking back on Google again…her idea of cat furniture doesn’t quite match ours….
Thanks for trying out the chairs here.

This seems kind of sad to me; ‘Everything old is new again”, and I’m trying to think why.
Love Mitzi, they don’t come along like that these days,
Screamers and shouters who need a mike shoved half way down their throats, and have the acoustics and echo chambers going full blast, so that it’s impossible to understand what they are screaming about.
Perhaps everything old should come back 😥

There are singers, musicians, and their music, then there are performers.Sigh. Sometimes I am a bit breathless when encountering older films with great character, plots, and dialogue you have to pay attention to ( and understand the classical references) – music and musicians is the same way. If the emerging fans only know what has been fed to them by current entertainers, will they ever know what they are missing? Rediscovering vintage might open a door. Thanks for a comment with something to sing about

I saw Sinatra twice live in Melbourne in the late 1950’s (58/59). He held us in his hand for close on an hour the second time around, with no acoustics loud noise or prancing aroujnd the stage. Just a man and a mike. How can I( ever forget that?

A real artist.
Easier to hide lack of talent/training if a moving target obscured by dazzling special effects?

Sadly Boulder has that tradition of bonfires in the streets each spring – or else some might be stashed away in some of those houses HAHA. Thanks for seating a chatty remark

Yes! I remember my Mum saying exactly this many many years ago. She reckoned you should never throw away clothes – wait a few years she said. They will be back in fashion before you know it!

My niece works in a business specializing in reselling mid-century modern furniture … so she has an eye for it!

Furniture from that era looked so simple, yet the quality and style was difficult to imitate cheaply. Your niece is a smart! (But she had to be – related to you, right?) Thanks for stocking this comment display.

You might be right about the naugas being extinct. I don’t remember the last time I saw one.

What a nice song, and how white the teeth (!). I missed it at the time. Could be there was too much going on here, though I did try to keep an eye on the American experience. Of course, Naugahide did make its appearance. Can’t tell you if it’s still around. Probably in certain places. I think I had a car once that had seats made of that material. But the song rings right today, and with it still ringing in my ears, I’m waiting for some school age idealists to come round soon, asking for donations to save the Naugas. Thanks for the warning.
