Air waves and daring devils

’tis the season for stuff up in the air: the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow and odd gifts from secret admirers/desirers whether you want them or not.

Look, it doesn’t matter if Santa Claus is supplying info to WikiLeaks. At least someone is.

Mysterious monolith at attention as Air Force Blue Angel jets go vertical. Oh, OK it’s a half-done highway sign support, but it’s a bit 2001 A Space Odyssey-ish.©

It used to be whistleblowers and investigative reporters that kept politicians, elected officials, big business, and the high-profile nervously looking over their shoulder and mostly honest.

Not recently.

Grocery store scandal sheet have become more believable than traditional new sources who apparently are either afraid to report, have been bought off, or more than willing to trade their loyalty for future access and stories.

If it’s the season for hot mikes, undercover videos, and emails-gone-wild in public, great. Information is power.

Info leaks are tradition: Deep Throat, Watergate Scandal, Nixon White House tapes, Erin Brockovich,

Check a whistleblower list here for those results

She was right: Russia is trying to intimidate voters and influence the election. Oh, OK. Blue Angels jets in formation over the Gulf Fwy. Always a traffic show stopper.©

So like turning on a kitchen light to run the roaches so you can smush them, information leaks serve a purpose. Like it or not.

What I don’t like is Sen Marco Rubio telling people to back off and ignore the leaked Hillary Clinton emails with “Today it is the Democrats. Tomorrow it could be us.”

Really? A “those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” thing?

If that doesn’t tell you both major parties are worried that the public will notice the parties are the basically same, only out for power for themselves, equally corrupt, and how the power brokers/elites really view the ordinary voters….

Remember the time you told something to one person who sworn not to tell, but did?

Ran home crying only to be told “If you didn’t want it to get out, you shouldn’t have opened your mouth and told anyone.”

That old “Two can keep a secret if one is dead.”

Popular concept for old Mafia Godfathers and Rulers across ages.

They always do practice tricks near Ellington Airport.  Happens every fall, but newcomers are mesmerized on that Friday afternoon, tend to hit the brakes, and cause lots of wrecks. My neighbor’s got a new dent.©

Some things never go out of style. They just get updated.

A very wise CEO once said to me years ago, “Never put anything in email you wouldn’t want your very proper, old-fashion grandmother to read out loud in the middle of a big crowd.

Anything can get sent to the wrong inbox or hacked  – and does.”

Only fools and the arrogant think they are untouchable.

So much up in the air.

What if the path your life took depended on data?

“…an authoritarian government monitors everything you do, amasses huge amounts of data on almost every interaction you make, and awards you a single score that measures how “trustworthy” you are.

In this world, anything from defaulting on a loan to criticizing the ruling party, from running a red light to failing to care for your parents properly, could cause you to lose points.

And in this world, your score becomes the ultimate truth of who you are — determining whether you can borrow money, get your children into the best schools or travel abroad; whether you get a room in a fancy hotel, a seat in a top restaurant — or even just get a date.”

(Read more here: “China’s plan to organize its society relies on ‘big data’ to rate everyone.”)  China’s possible target date: 2020.

Couldn’t happen here, right?

That would be called oppression government experts deciding to tell you what is right, good, and best for you ’cause you just can’t look at things, analyze information, and  decide for yourself.

I agree… if you want to keep a secret, just keep it… and never write it down… specially not in emails… or learn how to delete them finally from your computer…. oh wait, that’s too much effort… so how about creating an email account with the name of your rival… done in a minute, guarantor for endless fun :o)

Easy – excellent thoughts. The internet, FB, emails – all created for games! As you say, a never ending supply of fun. Thanks for landing that comment here

We always told employees not to put in emails anything you don’t want your mother to read.

Yep…but these days “kids” just won’t listen (or think about possiblities or consequences either it looks like). Some of the old concepts are still pretty solid. Thanks for adding a line in the comment lane

And it’s not only kids! Politicians! Really!

Add to all this the fact that too many believe anything they read if it’s on the internet (which virtually, so to speak, everything is somewhere) and you have a real mess. Government here is already telling us much too much and worse, making laws to force us to do whatever they determine is best for us.

One thing that really, really, really annoys me is the information “from an anonymous source” who is anonymous because s/he wasn’t supposed to say anything. Like that make it OK. Grrrr.

OK, back to my hockey game and a bit of sanity. 🙂

And far too few now are taught any analytical skills. (Much too much chanting and “your turn” parroting in schools – and people wonder why students are failing to develop higher level thinking skills…but does create easily lead, trusting, obedient adults)
Running down primary/original sources of stuff can be done with a little time, determination, and skill – but so few are willing to bother to check out rumors/”information” these days…especially is a celebrity/high profile person is repeating something. Not only sad, but eventually a nightmare.
Oh, look – nice weather. An alternative! Thanks for swooping in the chat

The adulation of celebrities as oracles is so frustrating and annoying. I can admire someone acting skills without in any way taking anything they say as gospel or even for granted (although maybe for granite.) 🙂

        • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 26 2016 4:30 pm

When a couple of aging celebrities came out to endorse candidate, I couldn’t help thinking a good number of young voters went “Who?” Agree you. Entertainers should stick to rocking the stage/arena and not politics.

Of course, they’re entitled to their opinions, but there’s no reason to think those opinions mean more or are more well-informed.

Hmmmm…. I’m not sure I want to come home and get plugged back in. Maybe I’ll come home, and not get plugged in. There — that’s the ticket. I have this wacky idea that there are things better to do with life than let people who are selling “whatever” tell me that I have to buy, or else.

Cheerful thoughts from the road! In a week, I’ll be back at work, and somehow I don’t mind the thought. We’ll see how unplugged I can stay.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 25 2016 4:12 pm

Bet after these last few months a large number of people are unpugging and getting back to real life – without regrets. Head down and happy to be overlooked and invisible. Sounds like sci fi as much as retro?
Thanks for flying in for a short stop!

    The internet. Ruined life really.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 25 2016 4:09 pm

All altered: life, society’s behavior, attention spans, brain function, and such a pollution source (both environmental and just mental). Maybe sun spots and blasts are an attempt reorganize civilization’s path. Thanks for adding an glowing observation

Very true–I love that saying about secrets–The Pierces have a song about it too. I never post on Facebook anything I don’t want to have public. They keep changing the privacy rules all the time so my default is public.

Good to see someone agree with me.
