Unmasked…for now.

Fog seeping into the brain.

Willingly submitting to the heaviness with fingers too angry to begin.

Why at this time?

This palindrome of publishing.

Restless feet trying to prompt: “The hardest part of any journey is the first step.”

A plain bare table – in any coffee shop. Would suffice.

Has magically done so before.

Just walk.

And starve.

Or the humiliation of smirks

Not so smart after all?

Drifting thoughts as survival skills in an adversarial environment.

Why can’t the fog engulf and obscure inside cubicle as it does on the other side of the glass?

Bent form over keyboard swaddled in shapeless hoodie as good as an invisibility cloak.

A fabric “road closed” sign to passers-by.

Especially the holly and jolly ones.

A thousand words a day. It could be done.

Next season graciously signing books destined for an over-the-top holiday presentation?

“Look. It’s signed by the author! And she illustrated it, too. What a find!”

Purchases clutched as they rush out rejoicing in their glorious luck.

(What was the author’s name again?)

So eager to toss it into another’s hands and receive gracious praise for their uncanny ability to spot emerging genius.

Oh, for a story to be so treasured year after year.
(Image: Lin Kristensen/commons.wikimedia.org)

How would that feel?

Smooth and pure as these pencil marks swirling without guidance across the annoying pile of memos?

Paper. Did the tree’s wood scream as they crushed and pulped it?

No. Mustn’t go there.

Little voices pleading.

Disrupting productive functioning.

Like this one nagging louder and louder – more intrusive. Nagging.

Oh, one quick look in return for silence.

Harsh silence of the cubicle tomb:  the ridiculing silence

Not so smartie now.

Illustrating on command.

The ergonomic chair restraining as much as leg irons.

Untold hours spent bringing image to match words – only for sudden rough shifting of gears.

“Oh, let’s try putting in some cute furry pets on that chair, hmmm?

No, better yet, make it a floral couch – in front of a quaint fireplace.

Yes, of course that means changing the curtains and rug’s design.

No problem, right?

Fine, we need that in say, the next 20 minutes.

Wait!  What if the colors were a bit warmer? That would make it so cozy.

Quickly now. We’re on a tight schedule.”

Finely crafted as any book. (Image: Gabriele Luvara/commons.wikimedia.org)

Might as well be writing a coloring book.

Should have been born as a celeb’s dog. Probably would be published yesterday. With all profits going to some charitable cause – like a chauffeured limo: have to get to events to raise money for the unfortunate!

No. A cat. People like cats. An arrogant know-it-all one. Ha! Instant fame and huge writer’s advance guaranteed.

Guaranteed drain, this dark place.

So, hush screaming purple memo.

A glance and then something to give you something to really scream about: the shredder.

Oh, maybe not shrieks.

Maybe angels whispering?

A contest.

With a cash prize.

Every picture tells a story.

And this audience would hear it.

All the banners, promo material, and T-shirts. Bound to be lots of those.

A step away – from here?

A chance on the stage.

Maybe this time, the right place at the right time for the right person.

One that will turn and say, “What else do you have?”

Every picture tells a story.

Frau in garten by Monet (1867. Expired copyright.US public domain/ commons.wikimedia.org)

An island lover required – who could have a problem there?

Islands in the stream.

Islands of the mime.

No man is an island.

Obviously, island time.

Mardi Gras! Galveston is searching for a sign: an official poster contest for their 102nd celebration.

Wild and wacky.

Joy not repressed.

Whimsy displayed.

Joy and whimsy? The fog snickers the holiday words.

But in the distance, a sea gull calls: “Island time and beads for all!”

An enticing image there, amid the fog.

A contest as lighthouse?

(Requires a light-hearted response).

A simple click for contest information, unmask your muse, and the escape begins.

Plan now for Mardi Gras 2013. (Poster contest ends Dec 14th)

(Maybe it should have been included on the Aztec calendar? They did know how to throw a bash.)

Good luck, thou of the fast draw!

You can blame the Mind tobogganing on that ice ramp? glad you skated over (Oh, between Dec 25-Jan 2 or so, local TV stations here are desperate for “human interest”/filler stories…you might fit in there neatly for your local station?…working in the holiday hotel industry, a well followed blogger….and an author, too…just an idea..a short letter/email to their human interest programing person?)

Haha! Totally distracted by your use of Every picture tells a story, as Every picture tells one is the name of one of my many other blogs.

We have posters regularly for all our Spanish fiestas, they are seriously good. I think I have only snagged one and it was a gloomy overly religious one at that.

I kept thinking of that song “Every Picture Tells a Story” over and over again. That’s a great name for a blog – I have no idea how you manage to keep up with all of yours – but nice to file different content that way.
I remember some of the fiesta posters – they are hard to grab. There are frequently posters for big events – sometimes limited editions that are signed – usually I just end up with a T shirt if I like the poster design…I keep thinking I’ll frame some of the old ones.

“A thousand words a day. It could be done.”

Yes, I could easily do that. Now, a thousand words worth reading… that might be another matter.

Being close to the coast we get fog as cold fronts try to push back the semi tropical air. I was struggling to keep from getting pulled over by Molly trying to get a shot of the egret flock in flight amid the trees…she is fascinated by bird, but had been still long enough.
Galveston has had Mardi Gras forever (there’s a lot of that in Louisiana’s other cities/towns, too)..slowed by wars or hurricanes at times, but everyone wants to party! Glad you decided to dance along

Much as some of them might want to, archaeological clients can’t dictate what we write up for their projects. 😉 We have to tell it like it is, even if they’d rather have warmer colors (and fewer finds).

And maybe when we’re still here after the so-called Maya doomsday, people can stop predicting the end of the world for another 1,000 years or so. 😉

Oh, you just expressed the real joys of research writing: it is what it is/ facts are facts /data is data.
I get amused by the Maya thing…you know how when you move stray pages and bits and pieces get left behind because you’re just too tired and rushed to clean it all up?
      Thanks for digging around here

I think there must be a muse convention somewhere. Mine, except for the locum kitchen muses who conjure up dinners without much input from me, are MIA… maybe it’s Muse Mardi Gra?

remember sharpening pencils in wall mounted pencil sharpeners with the crank handle in school ….somehow that seems like a good comparison to getting a book written, ready, and published?

You know where my Muse goes when she hits the road? Poughkeepsie. Think about that one for a while. 😉

I just am not ready to deal with Mardi Gras yet. Too bad they don’t want photos for their posters – I’ve got a dynamite photo that would make a cool poster, but so it goes. Have you seen the doberman-carved-from-an-oak all dolled up for Mardi Gras? I’ve got a pic of him, but I need to go down and get a photo of him in his Christmas finery. Good gosh – we’re almost to Dickens and the Boat Parade. Puffpuffpantpant……

Need to make a run to the island – great time for pix with all the Victorian theme stuff, too.(Dicken’s 200th birthday party this weekend)…you’re right – time to get the running shoes out.
