Good Good Friday: especially for Sergeant Rex

It’s shaping up to be a very good Good Friday.
Despite the storms in DFW area, East Texas old timers are pretty smug. Things holdin’ to folk tradition: no matter the recent mild weather, no matter how long it’s been since the last frost, there’s always a bad storm just before Good Friday.

The rural farmers always said it happened to remind folks what Easter was about.

Funny thing is, that there does always seem to be extreme weather Easter week.

Odd, that.

(But probably doesn’t really have anything to do with that new show GCB set in Dallas. Seriously. It doesn’t)

Anyway, after any storm there’s usually a rainbow and a sense of peace.

One storm appears to be almost over:

Megan Leavey’s struggle to adopt Sergeant Rex, the military dog.

(Paws crossed.)

  • A source in Lackland said earlier this week their part is done and Rex is released from them.
  • Sen. Charles Schumer says Megan and Rex are to be united Friday. (Orange County Register and CBS News, NY)
  • Randy and Mindy Levine of the New York Yankees deserve a big round of applause from everyone. They are offering to pay for Megan’s travel expenses to California to pick up Rex. In additions, they have promised to take fund all or Rex’s future medical bills.
  • Meagan Leavey lives in Valley Cottage, N.Y and works as a dog handler for a private security company.
  • In retirement, Rex will join a pack including Rocky (the 7 yrs shiba inu) and Patriot (4 yrs. working Labrador). And he will be able to dog paddle leisurely around a pool and lounge in the sun to bake those aging joints. Sounds perfect.

So hopefully DFW will get all those planes back in the air and straighten out the flight backlog. Rex is waiting.

Here’s a posted comment from Megan’s aunt, Marion Leavey:

“Cpl Megan Leavey is my niece and once again she made the entire family proud,I remember shortly after 911 she, like so many other young men and women decided to join the military. We held our breath and with great trepidation watched as she was deployed to IRAQ.When we received news that she was wounded on a combat mission we all prayed that she would be ok.Megan came home and recovered from her injuries. When she heard that they might have to put Rex down she knew she could never allow that to happen, A MARINE LEAVES NO ONE BEHIND, thank you Megan and Rex for your service and let me thank all the people that helped to make this happen.”

Certainly can’t add anything to that.

(Other than support pending legislation concerning military dogs)

Sergeant Rex's official portrait from Camp Pendleton

Semper fidelis.

The Marines got it from them. “Ever faithful”

It’s going to be a great Good Friday

The footage of the semi trucks being tossed around in the air was something else!

    Great news about Sergeant Rex!

Wonderful news. I don’t know how anyone could look into those eyes and not know instantly that nothing less than everything must be done for Rex and his canine colleagues.

Yes, YEA! (Good news is there’s quite a waiting list to adopt military dogs – hopefully the process will speed up.) Thanks for stopping by

That is just such a fine looking dog. As for the weather – hadn’t heard that about the pre-Easter weather. Where I come from, it’s the Boy’s Basketball Tournament Blizzard. It never failed. Never.

Loved the addition from Megan’s aunt. Happy endings are so good.

Rex is outstanding. His first handler blogged about their time together before he wrote the book. The dog deserves some peace and quiet – and lots of hugs.
Oh, yeah that’s a real old time East Texas thing about always expect an absolutely terrible storm just before Easter. (Think what you may, but Dallas got hit – and that TV show is about Dallas…eggactly eerie….) Another couple of regional folk sayings: “Of course it’s raining – the trail riders are headed in for the rodeo”, and “It ALWAYS gets bitter cold and rainy for the boat show” (January – it used to be a giant show at the Astrodome with all the sailboats and yachts along with the fishing / motor boats…many times ran across that parking lot in heavy coats)
      Thanks for sloshing by today

It will be a Good Friday indeed! Though hey, if S. 2134 and HB 4103 go through, Rex’s medical bills will be taken care of by Uncle Same, won’t they?

Best news I’ve heard all day! Here’s to Megan and salutes to Sergeant Rex. You can sense the intelligence in his eyes even from the photos. Well done PMOTH! Your efforts in helping to bring this to the attention of all is greatly appreciated.

Best news I’ve seen in a couple of months. Is anyone going to cover the happy event with cameras? I don’t have much hope that our national “news media” is likely to cover this story.

It’s probably too good of a photo op to pass up – and it’s gotten a lot of attention. Rex probably would rather skip the crowds and just go home quietly. Thanks for stopping by and tossing that out.

Rumpy! Just got confirmation there will be a big media event with Megan Leavey and Sergeant Rex Good Friday at Camp Pendleton.
Now I feel confident it’s really really going to happen. Sergeant Rex is finally going to his forever home with Megan.
Jumping and barking here! The German sends nose bumps to all!
(It was almost 89 degrees today – so the dog walks are going to have to start being much earlier and later.)
