Yet another sappy dog story

Not Rex. It’s Buck. And a woman with cancer. Wait – the ending is really happy. Sigh. Wandered off. Well, it’s the weekend – no one’s really gonna read this anyway.

So this is short. (HA! I heard you snort over that.)

Buck's best friend, Tina (Image: James Nielsen, Houston Chronicle)

  • Beloved preschool teacher. She was magic with kids: used the Dog Whisperer techniques to herd each year’s pack of preschool kids through the school year. Adored by all.
  • Gets cancer.
  • Beats cancer (Tina has such spirit.)
  • Back to the kids and the future
  • Surprise email sent to all her friends – many are former parents of students who have stayed in touch
  • Cancer is back – bad this time.
  • FIghting hard.
  • Buck, her dog is frantically trying to protect her from a danger he cannot understand or threaten away with growls – but he tries

  • The sicker she gets – the more fiercely protective he becomes of her and her family.

  • The cancer will win this time – no real hope.
  • Confused Buck fights the invisible
  • During a walk with his weak owner, a well-wisher, an older woman, comes over to chat.
  • Buck goes in to extreme protective mode. Pulls owner down. Knocks elderly woman down and grabs her arm
  • The elderly woman – and everyone says it’s just a little scratch – very little blood
  • But a neighbor seeing the ruckus – and concerned for the weak cancer patient calls paramedics
  • Because there is blood – even though a tiny bit – it is reported as a dog attack
  • Buck is now classified as a “dangerous dog” by animal control and is micro chipped with that information
  • If he ends up in a shelter, he will instantly be killed: “biter”

  • No rescue group or shelter will be able to take him
  • Owner is now making final plans. Family concerns are settled as much as they can be, but…
  • What about Buck? She is frantic to protect his future – and find him a home

  • A home: must be able to deal with emotional, confused dog with behavior issues…a basket case.
  • So an email goes out ( Read this article  for the complete story up to here: “Woman Needs Home for Dog”)
  • WAIT! It’s going to be OK
  • Lots of people offering homes – over 300! But which would be best for Buck?

Buck and Tina (Image: James Nielsen. Houston Chronicle)

  • HAPPY ENDING!

  • Like Goldilocks, Buck will be getting the perfect place.
  • (And it’s not the one with goats…yeah, Buck didn’t want goats for siblings)
  • Who did she pick?
  • Someone absolutely perfect
  • They need each other. (Boogie would approve)
  • So READ HERE to find out: “Update: A New Home for Buck”

OK, So it wasn’t short.

But it is a happy story  and I try to keep my promises.

Just like Tina did for Buck.

Now carry on.

(Now back to regular scheduled non-dog blogging….)

Always a sucker for a sad doggy,

Phil, the Philosopher Mouse of the Hedge

I’ve just about had all the emotion I can take for one week – but it’s a great story!

Actually, I’ve started to worry about what would happen to my cat if I got struck by a Metro bus – maybe I need to redo my will. 😉

Metro bus or train? Neither have very good history with “accidents”(Just make sure someone around has a key and knows to check on cat….I worried, too.) Hope things floated along this weekend!

A story so much like life: a lingering haunting melody. We should help each other along when we can. Hoping things are going well there as you wait and wait….thanks for taking time to stop and chat.

Post as many sappy dog stories as you like, especially sappy dog stories with happy endings. If the ending is sad, please warn early so I can wait until I’m home to read the post, not at my office desk or on the train. This was a great story.

I was all set to make a dash for the box of tissues, but then you said it was going to be okay, so I stayed put and kept reading. I read through “Update: A New Home For Buck”. Doggoneit…I should have gotten those tissues…

It’s a bittersweet situation…I feel awful that she will be giving up her dog, but am happy that the dog has a chance for a loving home.

Pretty intense story. Important to celebrate what we can – and help where we can. Life is fragile – which many learn too late. (OK, more tissues) Thanks for adding your thoughts
