Egypt cowboy ups.

Disrespectful? Or shrug and “lighten up?”

Marketing attempt? (Any publicity is good publicity!)

Feel free to decide.

Only in Texas.

It’s Go Texan Day In Houston.

The world-famous Houston Livestock Show and Concert Rodeo gallops to life this week. Now decked out with a city slicker name tag, Rodeo Houston is a huge event raising money for scholarships featuring a carnival, shopping for western items, much food, and big musical acts of all types – with a sprinkling of steers, cowboys, cowgirls, and horses. (You can still wander the livestock “barn” and arena if you want to see animals.)

But today is beginning of rodeo season in Houston – opening with the extreme rivalries of  the World Famous Bar-B-Que cookoff and beer guzzling contest on the Reliant Park grounds. (Such a big event, it has a whole weekend to itself before the rodeo actually opens….drivers of family cars are probably appreciative)

So how does Egypt fit in here? (Although there are some lovely Arabian horses scheduled in events…just don’t tell the Quarter horse cowboys – never the twain shall meet. It’s a horse life style thing.)

Take a look.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston has been hosting a “Tutankhamun: The Golden King and Great Pharaohs Exhibit” which opened with great fanfare. Considering there have been numerous King Tut and mummy exhibits around in the past few years, not sure how attendance has been.

Odd news articles appeared talking not so much about the wonders and history of the display, but more appealing to the, well let’s say, “common touch.”  Articles talked about the ancient toilet seat, and how some of the statues were naked. Hmmm. OK, these were 3rd graders. What better way to encourage a family to visit the King Tut exhibit?

Anyway, it looks like MFAH decided it would be great if the 25 foot seven ton statue of Anubis, now standing in front of the museum, joined in with the Go Texan spirit. So workers draped a jaunty cowboy bandana around his neck and buckled a cowboy belt around his waist.

Cool or cruel?

Anubis is the guardian of the ancient Egyptian afterlife.

So he must be a fun guy right? A party animal ready to celebrate. Tears of joy obviously.

It’s not quite like burning Qurans.

Or baptizing Anne Frank as a Mormon.

But feels sort of hillbilly-ish?

It’s funny.

Just a big Hee Haw.

Go on. Go Texan, ya’ll

Don’t think that whole rodeo, mustang, cowboy boots is quite me. Although I did see the Tut exhib at the BM some 30 40 years ago.

Gotta respect all cultures. 🙂 Maybe.

Oh and I totally got MFAH wrong until I looked back up your post. 🙂

This Rodeo Houston thing isn’t really Texas or rodeo. It’s more of a Hollywood western party, champagne deal with a concert. Each ethnic group has their own “special day” with “their” entertainers. There is livestock – but mostly in the background. The group changed in order to keep raising money for college scholarships and literacy programs for public schools – and they raise a lot of people benefit. SO we’ll just grit our teeth at the rhinestone cowboys ( more talk than cattle) Some Rodeo Houston performances will be available on line if you look.
It is so Houston though – ANY excuse for a party! Thanks for moseying by

Golly, sounds much like our Great Western Stock Show up my way. Texas seems ahead of us some. Doubt we’d be ready for Egypt and all. Have fun, ya hear.

King Tut + Rodeo. Not two things I’d of put together, but I like how Houston has melded the two together. Very creative– and just a little warped. I like it.

We have something similar here in KC called the American Royal, complete with Bar-B-Q cookoffs, anything on 4 feet, and all the gear that comes with them. From Saddlebreds to PBR, it’s a 6 week long event. We’ve been to the PBR a few times, but shhh, don’t tell them I said this, they were terrible. The boys from the local youth rodeo team rode during the intermission, and beat the ‘pros’ amazingly. From a die-hard fan, Ya gotta love youth rodeo!

Sounds like real rodeo. Love the local weekend rodeos and county livestock shows. Now there’s the nitty gritty…seriously dirt flung in the stands. Thanks for galloping by.

I think its rather amusing, making Anubis feel welcomed and all. But I would NOT want to be the one responsible for this when the curse for disrupting the dead brings the mummys to life & reek havoc on the folks of Houston …. have you seen “The Mummy” movies ? They have no sense of humor.

Whoa. Hold those horses! You are sooo right! I just can’t believe a museum would allow this. Just so very weird…and then you add in the mummy thing…Thanks for leading that idea into the ring.

Everything is BIGGER in Texas even King Tut! lol. Coming from a very small island, it can be quite overwhelming … in a good way. It’s like another planet. 🙂

The statue is a replica of the real one in Egypt – but the bandana and belt are a bit much….but as you say, no place like Texas. Thanks for trotting past.

I’ve never been to Texas, but if we can mix Anubis with cowboy boots, I’m all for it.

Sorry but I have to vote that this is inappropriate. The statue is a work of art and to put a badana and belt on the statue is wrong. And yes, I’m a Texan.

There’s new leadership at the MFAH. Hope this isn’t a trend. Ditto (and there is that mummy curse thing mentioned in another comment….) Thanks for mentioning this

Well, if Texas can’t do cowboys right, nobody can. And I say that as a lifelong Oklahoman now living in Denver. However, as much as I’ve always embraced the cowboy thing, I’d draw the line at bandanas on the King. I know, I know, I’m just an old stick-in-the-mud.

West is west. I’m surprised those who travel with this exhibit allowed the Go Texan costume. (That group takes a chunk of the profits from exhibit attendance.) It’s just hee haw, MFAH. Thanks for herding those doggies this way

Well, look at it this way. At least they didn’t let the folks from the Pasadena Rodeo get ahold of Anubis.

I wouldn’t have thought of it, but I don’t have any problem with it. On the other hand, I’m one of the crowd that sat for hours watching the live webstream of the corpse flower at the Natural History Museum, so I’m a little out of the mainstream, anyhow.

At least they didn’t dress him like Big Tex at the Oct State Fair…be grateful for that, I guess? (OOOO, they have bought another corpse flower plant!) Thanks for trotting down this way
