About the author

Having spent an adventurous life with business, traveling, research, and reading wide, Phil, the Philosopher Mouse of the Hedge, has returned to a sunny spot that is more than adequate for entertaining, and reflecting – and, as an added plus, only a short walk to the marina and sweeping sunsets.

Phil is known for astute observations, insightful analysis, and common sense comments of city, field, and that odd species:  humans.

Writers, like sharks, must keep moving to survive. Always looking for a good read – never know what you may find. (besides people who write about cars must be going somewhere, no wait, those who write about cars are heavy metal…no, wait, people that write about cars have class? Better stop before this goes flat….) Anyway, welcome to WordPress. Enjoy the ride – hope our paths cross again.

Thanks so much for “liking ” my post. I really enjoy your writing and think you may be one of those lucky people that just have a wonderful way with words of the English language. I admire that and forever wish that I could somehow perhaps through osmosis be able to use language in this way.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Nov 14 2011 4:11 pm

Thanks for the kind words. Anyone like yourself with experience in marketing and photography has a keen era / eye for language and communication. Just have fun blogging. One of the best pieces of advice I have seen about having a “good” blog is : “write, write, write”…(might want to add: read, read, read….and get out and do stuff, get out and do stuff, get out and do stuff.) Thanks for visiting!

Agree whole heartedly! I *love* seeing other opinions delivered respectfully :-) And yes, that whole Perry/Pelosi thing HAD to be a joke? I did love how he made fun of himself afterwards – but dang her response was still pretty classic. Politics is truly hysterical if you remove your own ego out of it. A true game of (frequent) fools.

      • philosophermouseofthehedge / Nov 19 2011 4:12 am

Her response was terrific. It’s always an interesting game to watch – such a casts of characters. No one could make this stuff up. Stay tuned for chuckles.

A philosopher mouse of the hedge
Found his poetry close to the edge.
    Though he wandered a bit,
He was blessed with quick wit,
Which he used to hold onto the ledge.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Feb 28 2012 3:13 pm

Thanks for the verse (poetry: precise concise language of a quick mind…or is that “a quiet minefield”?) Glad you threw yourself in this direction.

Searched in vain for an e-mail address for you, Phil, to no avail. Is that any way for those humans to treat a Philosopher Mouse? As if.

Thank you for your comment at my place. Great to see you there.

I’m glad you liked the story. It has flaws, but I think it has potential. I’m going to see if I can’t whip it into shape and then maybe get someone to pay actual money for it (what a concept!). The Epilogue is in the works, about half done. Then I’ll revisit the whole thing and edit, rewrite, polish, etc.

    Thanks for visiting. Come again!

        All nine zillion of us!

  79. Christine / Mar 9 2012 1:40 am

While you’re in the philosophizing mood, how about contemplating the penetrating question: why do some of us HAVE TO tell the world everything we think about while others sit and meditate, silently savoring their own thoughts, feeling no need to share? Are we driven by some perverse urge to communicate or does this stem from a compulsion to write something – anything?

I asked myself this when I started my blog and no definite answer has come forth — so maybe you can help me.

Thanks for the LIKE on my latest post, by the way.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Mar 9 2012 4:16 am

Hi Christine. Good points. Maybe it takes all kinds to make the world interesting? Some say the onlu thing certain in life is uncertainty…The only order is chaos? Enjoyed your post. Will be fascinating to see what you discover. Thanks for visiting.

  80. robincoyle / Mar 10 2012 9:38 pm

I like your perspective… you’re managing to create a voice of truth that is not imbalanced and bitter. Thanks for following my blog, and here’s the new one I also hope you find of interest… (“Fika After Fifty),” my way of encouraging women who would otherwise sit quietly knitting through their fifties and beyond, to do something else, something more adventurous, but not all-out crazee. :-)

Hello… I just read a comment that you left on a post about Page and Eloise Smith last March. You mentioned that your father was a medic in World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany. My father was also a medic at that time and was behind enemy lines at the Battle of the Bulge. I did a post about him and that time here:

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Apr 19 2012 6:33 pm

I’ll be sure to head over shortly to read. Dad was MIA behind enemy lines in Germany with a small group that went back to rescue injured men after a skirmish – the actual lines were very fluid and constantly moving. During one battle the command called the hospital station to warn them that the line wasn’t going to hold and to either leave/take off medic insignia and pick up a gun/or just take chances. THere were men on the table and all docs and medic just stayed. Shortly it was quiet – the word came down, the line held – the German tanks ran out of gas. This was the 42nd Rainbow Division. A brave group of soldiers – a few still are alive.

(please excuse the giddy/blurry – been struggling with a post that’s been simmering a bit – not sure it’s done, but it’s posted so I can move on..but it will still nag at me, you know how it is…)

Hi Phil…. I was going to attach this as a comment to the last Sergeant Rex post but couldn’t find a Comments box! So I’m doing it here. Care2 has taken up the cause of military dogs. Here’s the link:
Thank you for making me aware of this issue!

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Jun 22 2012 1:59 pm

Hmm, much check settings on that post’s comment section. Will copy and add that comment in. Rex made me aware of the military dogs’ lives, too. They do serious work and save lives. They deserve appropriate protective gear, suitable comfortable kennels, and recognition and care once retired. Thanks for sending this over here.

  101. changeforbetterme / Aug 23 2012 5:27 pm

Hi, I really enjoy reading your blog and have nominated you for the “Inspiring Blog Award” and “One Lovely Blog Award.” There are a few rules to this nomination (these aren’t my rules, so do what you want…no pressure) you need to give a shout out to me, of course, tell us 7 things about yourself and then nominate 15 bloggers, that’s the tricky part, if you don’t have 15, don’t worry, just pass it on to someone….share the joy by following the link by my name.

If you have all ready been nominated my apologies and pass it on anyway! We all love to be recognized for our work. Enjoy!

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Aug 23 2012 6:32 pm

I’m honored you thought of me! I’ll click over and review the rules. (envious you are done!) I will get that post written – right now a buffalo is stomping in the background and a mad cat keeps trying to steal the keyboard…Thanks again! Always glad when you stop by to chat

      • changeforbetterme / Aug 23 2012 6:36 pm

think you better deal with that buffalo first! :-) you’re welcome and I always enjoy your posts.

Thanks for joining us along the trail. Hope you find stuff to tickle your brain. (Really enjoyed your take on blogging and mobile devices. great read)

  113. maryz / Mar 19 2013 7:51 pm

I’ve just arrived here from your comment to the Dancing Beastie. Are you perchance at Rice? You mentioned Houston and Galveston, and I connected hedges and philosophy to Rice. It’s been many, many years since we were there.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Mar 19 2013 8:40 pm

The trees along Rice are just as beautiful and survived the the drought and Hurricane Ike without a bend or break. Native to the area and always feel at home when under them, but moved closer to the water. (The “new” rail line from downtown to med center runs across from Rice and there’s a designated Rice station. Downtown Foley’s/Macy’s closed forever last week.) Thanks for flying over to chat

      • maryz / Mar 19 2013 9:36 pm

I’m not that far away – just a bit north in Chattanooga. We grew up in Houston, graduated from Lamar (1953) and San Jacinto (1952) and went to Rice (classes of 1957 and 1956). Neither of us graduated (although we did elsewhere); moved to Tennessee in 1962. Still have family in The Valley and friends in Houston.

    Hi There,
Would you be willing to participate in something we are doing for Susie Lindau on Friday morning? I am contacting as many of her followers as possible. My thought is that we all post on our own blogs on Friday with the same title, “Susie Strong”. The content would say something simple like, We are thinking of you. I haven’t known Susie for long but this blogging world is such a family. I thought it would be nice for her to see this message from as many of us as possible. Her husband is going to be updating us after her surgery. He can tell her or she can see it once she is up to it. Are you in? Thanks, Maria aka brickhousechick

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / May 30 2013 1:00 am

Was thinking today about emailing or posting something for her. This is a great idea – Are we going to post all at the same time? Stagger postings all morning? Before her procedure? Use mountain time? What do you suggest? Thanks for organizing. Definitely in

      • brickhousechick / May 30 2013 1:09 am

A couple of us are going to do it at about 8 am, I know her surgery is at 9:30. Anytime in the am is great! Thanks for participating!

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Sep 16 2013 2:05 pm

Thanks for the lovely comment. People everywhere just want to be left alone to live with their families…and are tired of other people (who often don’t even live there or live with consequences) telling them how to run their lives. Sometimes you have to take a stand. Thanks for coming by ( and you create the most beautiful art work!)

    Hi Phil,
I’ve been enjoying reading your past blogs about the oak tree in League City that was moved. I’m trying to learn more about the reason why the road was being widened and why there didn’t seem to be any other alternative to removing the tree, for example, why not widen the road on the other side, where there wasn’t an ancient oak tree? Obviously there were other impediments. If you can recall what any of them were, or who I could contact to find out more, I’d appreciate you letting me know. It’s an amazing amazing story!
Thanks very much from the cold regions of Canada, where it actually snowed this morning…

Always glad to hear from readers.
