Muse or Mushhead redux

April Love by Hughes, 1855-. (US Public domain 80 yrs after artist death:commons.wikimedia.org)

Ah, the elusive muse.

Reaching out softly to create form and design out of foggy thinking. Unable to be ordered or commanded. Pure.

At odds with the Mushhead determined to cause enough discord for the most charitable to flee screaming.

And once again a small stage of characters strutting and fretting.

Muse or Mushhead?

The Groundings and Stinkards  never have problems discerning.

So pitch in a penny and stand to get your money’s worth.

It’ll be fun – like middle school was.

Portraits of the Muses by Richard Samuel,1778 (US Public domain / commons.wikimedia.org))

These Muses inspire? Prissy. Proper. Politically connected. Oh, that’s it.

She actually stood up and said it with a straight face.

The Red Cross spokeswoman calls their response to Hurricane Sandy “near flawless so far in this operation.”

Her comments to NBC news (video and article) were a tad defensive.

Some of the interviewed residents beg to differ.

Their President and CEO was a little more realistic with ” overall performance at this point is OK” but would like it to be “more perfect.”

Applause to all the Red Cross volunteers that actually do the hard work – without a big salary or office with a view or invitations to all those fancy parties with important politically connected  guests.

Something speaks to them.

Sometimes what works best are those small, almost invisible, and unknown – ask the Muses.

The Muse Calliope by Vouet, 1634 (US public domain: expired copyright/ commons.wikimedia.org)

The Muse Calliope, no timid maid. Confident and forceful – lucky those she chooses to aid

Ignoring the reality, chin forward, she boldly announced what had been formulated: an offending wretch caused all it – inciting a spontaneous mob.

So focus that outrage and “off with his video”?

Never a oopsie?

Just repeating the thin line? To grieving parents?

Oh, Hillary. Hillary. Hillary.

How sad.

You seem so strong, yet men are always pushing you around.

They’ll destroy you if you let them.

Sounds like a country western song – Oh, wait. You did live one of those.

Expected so much more. So disappointed.

You manage to vanish – always at a distance when there’s a fuss or mud being thrown.

Must be those survivor skills

(Do you adore reality TV shows? Is that how you managed?)

Apple Blossoms by Millais ( 1856-1859), (Public domain: artist death 100 years+ commons.wikimedia.org)

They all look a la muse.

Well, at least you have your friends (with large taxpayer-funded security detail)

No need to let demands your job get in the way of friendly gatherings.

Oh, Congress will just have to get on your dance card. (Is Dec. good for you?)

Sorry it’s just so exhausting, doing your job. (We all know how that can be.)

So glad Susan Rice was able to sub for you for so many interviews.

Even though it isn’t in her UN job description

Although she may not have had all the facts you might at hand. (She wouldn’t intentionally mislead.)

Great to have friends to help out until you are rested.

Hush. Is that a Muse speaking? Shrieking?

And the commiserating violinists play on.

Minerva among the Muses by Hendrick van Balen the Elder,1620's.(US public domain)

Muses seem to have a thing for warriors?

“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.”

from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám

A Muse might counsel this verse could apply to emails.

Please let it be a script for the next James Bond movie: “Two Can Keep a Secret if One of Them is Dead.”

Many in the NASA/ JSC community watching the scandal break are thinking:

“Glad to shuttle this one off to you guys.

Please don’t let adult diapers be involved.

Already with as many exotic plot acrobatics and contortions as Cirque du Soleil.

Maybe it’s the Washington area culture? Trying to copy that Hollywood glitz?

The frat boy antics of the Secret Service.

The CIA partying down.

The Administration spending like a drunken sailor.

Hey, if everyone else jumped off a cliff would you follow? (Insert snorting juvenile responses of your choice here.)

Still everything has a purpose.

Pretty, but unknown actresses wiggling with expectations of a docudrama or even a TV series?

Perhaps some will unplug and pick up a book. Search some light reading for a glimmer?

Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac or even the Boy Scout Handbook – for escape fiction, right?

Apollo and the Muses ( Peruzzi, 1481-1537) (US public domain)

The Muses enchanted Apollo. So what chance do modern warriors have?

Listen to a Muse? They’ve been around a while and seen it all.

Finding the sounds of silence not so empty,

Phil, the Philosopher Mouse of the Hedge

Email and the The Rubáiyát. Brilliant! Once of my favorite bits of poetry, and yet I never made the connection.

Genius ahead of his time? Funny how classic stuff endures and always seems to fit. Thanks for penning a response

I was wishing last night that I could use your style to talk about Savita Halappanavar. I have so much to say but I’m too angry to speak…

Nearly flawless? Interesting. When I use those words I’m thinking about a diamond from Tiffany’s. I’d describe the success or failure of the emergency response by using words like: effective, comprehensive, quick. But then, I’m not the Red Cross.

Maybe they got things crossed up? Word choice usually indicates something about the speaker. Grateful to all those volunteers who just showed up. THanks for playing along

There are some days when I just can’t bear the news. Maybe all of these stories are behind today’s monster headache that just won’t go away….

Certainly agree. You just have to laugh to keep from crying. RC is demanding equal time – and I think she’s right. glad you flopped down to chat

Do mushheads have muses? I think so. Yesterday I sat through a briefing that was pure spin, it was crap underneath but it was well dressed and accessorised crap… chocolate icecreams to make it go down sweeter… Today, I overhead a corridor conversation between 2 colleagues, one of whom hails from Maryland originally, a Romney supporter but who was ok with Obama… and he said ne never liked Hilary in her previous roles but likes her now… but worries she looks a bit off colour despite the new hairdo’s… maybe that’s the trick, don’t emulate super woman, just don your damsel in distress guise…

The trick is which little voice in the head to listen too? Sometimes shake my head at the garbage that comes out of people’s mouths. Unfortunately it looks like superficial knowledge, political games, and appearances are what’s important. Thanks for fuming along

Anyone who’s raised kids or lived in the world with their eyes open more than a decade can spot a liar. Let’s count the liars in this one: her, and her, and him. Him, too – and him! Yep, and her. I have a quick total of…. well, just about everyone involved in this one.

I have learned a new term. Geographical bachelor. Apparently it’s quite common in the military. 😉

The Sandy relief efforts do leave much to be desired. It’s got to be frustrating for those living in the area. As just a regular citizen, I wouldn’t know where to begin to help out…but I would expect the Red Cross to know. Four ring circus is right. What a confusing mess.

Gigantic mess. Guess when anything gets too big, things get wobbly and wheels start falling off? Do hope those in the high rises are getting some relief – and someone is physically checking on the elderly – they should be priority at this point? It always takes forever to get the poser back on – and boy do you appreciate it when suddenly there it is. It is a miraculous invention. So easy to forget. THanks for checking in

The link to that article was interesting – one of many news stories that passes me by. Thank goodness for blogs. Also reminded me of the film Behind Enemy Lines about (not) sending in a rescue team … and the Admiral defying orders, and authorising the rescue.

Oh, had forgotten about that movie. You are right. It’s only human to try and rescue those in need. Have to wonder about those who don’t (post simmering on that…so little time) Go throw rocks at someone for me….all I got is bytes. Glad you picked up the violin to play along

    Stellar writing/commentary.

And an incredibly, jaw-droppingly, abysmally crummy set of circumstances.
Sandy is still a horror, for sooooooooo many people.
Also…Why am I expecting us to learn [eventually] that one of those women is a 4-star madam?

Yes! The circus has got to be a TV series. Who could dream this stuff up.
Hopefully the weather will stay mild for the Sandy victims – although cold retards mold (the next crisis). Have to worry about the old people without family close by.
Thanks for the kind words. Always glad to see you
