No bones about it.

Actually that’s not true.

An arm here. A skull there.

Disjointed. Scattered on purpose.

But no backbone.

It’s plastic, silly!

Not necessary to run in the other direction.(unless there’s another debate on the TV)

The one time of year ghoulish sights don’t actually frighten (so what’s the fun in this?)

Ironic considering decorations were originally supposed to strike terror into the jello of heart.

A harvesty Halloween Martha would approve.

Marshmallowed out with whimsy for our overprotected  little cherubs.

Sickening sweet enough for the most timid princess and any mama’s boy.

Smiley ghost twins! As American as genetically engineered harvest corn, and plump gender neutral pumpkins.

This year there’s an additional spice to the seasonal decorating: it’s a rancorous election year.

Nothing says Halloween like red, white, and blue or idiotic election year  campaign yard signs.

Perhaps it’s not too much of a stretch.

Talk about horror stories, blood-letting, and frights. (Not to mention all the plastic)

Can’t miss the patriotism here.

But nothing is ever simple.

Do you think they don’t believe in Halloween?

Wait. It’s ‘way more disturbing….look closely….

Bony Uncle Sams, giant spiders, skeletons and bats around the door….and the Grim Reaper around the corner.

These people seem to have captured the season’s true spirit.

One thing left to wonder, though. (And house like this has bound to have considered)

There’s the question of sound effects:

Traditional howling wolves and spooky boo noises?

Wildly energetic versions of America the Beautiful? God Bless America? Military marches?

Simple groans, clanking chains, and tortured moans might be the most appropriate.

Chilling laughter might be a bit too on the mark?

Can’t wait for the big night – Halloween, of course, not the election.

No bones about it.

I love the house! And the decorations seem very appropriate for this year, though the skeleton Uncle Sams are sort of creepy. Wonder which side of the fence they sit on? I can’t wait to hear what sound effects they go with for Halloween.

I just don’t quite know what to say about those patriotic decorations. Do you suppose they’ve been sitting there since Memorial Day, and that explains their dessicated appearance? LOL

I say bring back astronauts, princesses, frogs and pirates. “Trick or treat!” will do quite well for a slogan, and the rule will be, eat as much candy as you can until midnight. And nobody has to put up with apples or little boxes of raisins. If I had a paw, I’d wave it!

I started to post the pix with no comments and ask for captions
I’ve been watching them decorate the past few days. It’s an interesting area – no stuff right off the shelves and out of Walmart bags here (only one inflatable pumpkin) pretty original stuff and decorating is a family affair with all the kids cartwheeling in the yard.
The German is not a fan of ghosts or pumpkins, so the walks are getting a little stressful for her.
You have the best Halloween rules! Want to be the Goblin Queen this year? Thanks for braving the haunts

That’s a wild bit of Halloween decorating you’ve captured… I guess if the red, white & blue comes out for Memorial Day and you can use it again for Halloween rather than buying a whole bunch of orange & black then you get 2 outings for the price of one batch of decorations. Maybe they’ll leave it up for the festive season and update Santa’s traditonal red & white, and Rudolph’s red nose with red, white & blue… or maybe they’ll just put cottonball beards and little pillow tummies on the skeletons. Keep us posted.

My first thought was “wonder if they add in turkeys for Thanksgiving and elves with reindeer for Christmas….” Just like leaving the Christmas lights up all year long. No lazy, practical to re-use and recycle….
      Thanks for hanging around.

Love the pics. My aunt freaked over a casket in a front yard Halloween display. Went on and on over how disrespectful it was. I think she’s just afraid that each Halloween brings her closer to her own casket. ;P

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 22 2012 1:01 pm

You may be right. Inventors: Casket avoidance systems needed.(new late TV by mail only product?)…actually the German would like a ghost and pumpkin avoidance system…red, white, and blue with skeletons she’s fine with…or maybe she thinks they are her imagination? Thanks for rattling the comments

Wow, I wonder what their front porch looks like during July . . . or December. Does Santa have an Uncle Sam suit too?

  6. Beth / Oct 22 2012 11:11 am

That is absolutely fantastic A “yard sign” that perfectly captures the spirit of the season. You must swing by on Halloween!

  7. RAB / Oct 22 2012 12:04 pm

Those swags. or whatever they’re called, under the roof–menacing owls’ eyes? Uncle Sam is dead…and dead…and dead… This is one creepy house!

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 22 2012 1:11 pm

Who’s watching whooooo? (Must go back when lights are finished and sound effects….they are bound to have sound effects). Thanks for risking the horror

Interesting commentary on the election! Wonder what they’ll be giving out on Halloween…

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 22 2012 1:15 pm

Good question. The kids will just throw away campaign buttons…raisins are bad enough.
Wonder what costumes will be worn by those handing out the treats? Simply intriguing. Thanks for swinging by

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 24 2012 1:16 am

Had to let you know – went back by today ( more decor in the yard) Guess What – their dog is running for president There are big signs with paw prints….more on this later!

Halloween is a fun night … but the recent-years shift of daylight savings time has taken away the darkness!

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 22 2012 1:21 pm

More difficult to get by with a crummy costume if it’s light, too! Forget about tripping a kid to grab their candy. (not bullying. meanness..otherwise known as older brothers….) Bring back Halloween traditions! Thanks for stopping for treats

  10. jmlindy422 / Oct 22 2012 2:34 pm

Cool house! BTW, I hate Halloween, but this was a cute post.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 22 2012 3:18 pm

A house you just couldn’t walk by without a second thought. Quirky or whimsical – certainly notable. Thanks for wandering along

  11. PiedType / Oct 22 2012 3:45 pm

‘Tis the season. They nailed it.

  12. The Hook / Oct 22 2012 6:42 pm

Very cool – and patriotic – display!

  13. dontchawannadream / Oct 22 2012 8:34 pm

    Very nice pics!! :)

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 22 2012 8:51 pm

Should have had a real camera with me – but didn’t know we’d stumble on this…between the cars and dog wanting to go on, these were OK. Thanks for hanging around to chat

Am I remembering rightly that the Grateful Dead used to have some artwork like those patriotic skeletons? I was never into their music, but I think I remember seeing bumper stickers like that…. If so, maybe that’ll be the musical backdrop to Halloween. ;)

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 22 2012 10:24 pm

Oh, yes. Had forgotten those! Totally wacky. Maybe that’s the inspiration? Thanks for digging that up.

  15. Katie Glenn / Oct 23 2012 3:49 pm

    Haha, how clever!

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 23 2012 4:37 pm

It’s a great decorating job…they’ve done even more! (must take camera) Thanks for adding a boo!

  16. jannatwrites / Oct 24 2012 4:29 am

I’m not a fan of Halloween (or elections) but I think these decorations are awesome! Uncle Sam skeletons…yeah, creepy, but funny.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 24 2012 1:10 pm

Had to share this house – but wait – they’ve done even more! Hope the weather holds so I can get a pix. These people are so creative. Thanks for gawking along

  17. writingfeemail / Oct 28 2012 11:23 pm

I love this house and your post. An arm here, a skull there – too funny. Hope all is well there.

    • philosophermouseofthehedge / Oct 29 2012 5:43 pm

This house got my vote of the best around. The German’s person managed to get back and I flew out ahead of the shutdowns. Right now that area is just rainy with “storm” due tonight(?). Loss of power is the big concern inland, but the Germans is snug and has a whole bag of food – she’ll be commenting shortly, I’m sure.
      Thanks for risking the scares!
